guys i was driving then out of know where my temp gauge on the cluster went over half way. so i pulled over turned engine off looked around for coolant leaks. nothing. decided to drive home. going about 70 i realised my needle was about 3/4 to 4/5 to the "h" then when i stopped at the lights it goes down to about half way to over half a bit. the momment i drive it goes up again
what is wrong ? its a d16y4 ek civic

Is it full of coolant or water? It is pretty warm in Sydney today so if the mix is not right the coolant may not be doing its job right. Also if the coolant hasn't been flushed in a while you can get build up in the cooling system so the coolant doesn't circulate properly...
Also it could be the thermostat not opening but i'm not sure how common a thermo failure is in the civics...

It sounds like there's a clog in your radiator being honest.
Don't quote me on that but;
driving = heat rises, stop driving = heat drops = possible blockage
^ Very common in Civic's for thermo to part shat itself.

I'm with Loiyed.
Blockage or thermo.

Radiator blockage.
Check both radiator hoses, if the bottom 1 is cooled and the top 1 is hot, might be Thermo. If both hot, than kinda the radiator is clogged and coolant is nt passing freely which can show over heating whenever is Hot weather.
flush or change the radiator and put a new coolant in. I recommend doing compression test, just in case.

Check for signs of headgasket on the way aswell
Zilli
24-02-2012, 04:56 PM
^and the way to do that is check your oil... if it is milky brown like a white coffee youve done a head gasket

GLad its fixed now yeh?
Make sure u check your radiator from time to time.
Just becoz the reserve has coolant doesnt mean the rad has coolant too..

Sounds similar to when I had a blown headgasket, if you can, run the car without the radiator cap, once it gets to temp if its blowing bubbles there is a high chance its blown a headgasket. If you want a sure way to check get a mechanic to check (they use a special fluid in the coolant which changes colour if it is blown)

I would say he doesn't have a BHG yet if this is the 1st time overheating and he didn't cook it.
Honda motors are pretty good in that respect. If you get on top of the problem before it gets worse.
find what's causing the heating & fix it, you should be ok if you're lucky.

I reckon the radiator is just needed a good flush and new thermostat

I know you said you fixed this but.............
Check for CEL codes, it could be an underlying problem.
I just changed a CTS on my cousins EG a few days ago which was having the same problems.
Make sure you bleed the coolant system aswell. While you're at it, crack open your thermo housing and check that the thermo actually opens at high temps and that it's clean.
Lucky last, make sure your fan works! (Just bridge the 2 wires on the plug on your thermo housing and the fans should go on).

thanks aytac
the problem came back again FUUUUUUUUU !!
i was driving next thing the temps on ****ing 3/4
i pulled over waited a bit open the radiator cap, all the coolent was no where to be seen .. the extra bottle thingy was over max, it was on max when it was normal
so yeah radiator was drained from coolent so i topped it up and drove around its normal atm
BTW this might be important. the past few days when i turn on my car cold start (mornings) theres some weird sound from the engine.

As I told you before, do a compression test. possible you have got Blown headgasket. This sounds like bearing sound.

I win!!
Is i said earlier, give it a good flush etc etc.
To jumper the scc, it could be near the ecu on a seperate plug or for EKs this plug is on the engine bay near the strut towers.
