Please assist with choosing speakers

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at purchasing speakers for my 02 s2000 at around the $400 mark.

I currently have an aftermarket head unit installed - Pioneer MVH-P8200 and i'm considering the PS165 FOCAL or JL audio C5

I find the stock speakers in the 02 had a massive improvement with the installation of the HU and am fairly satisfied when i'm cruising around town...but i find it lacks some power when i pump up the volume for highway cruising - there is slight distortion

I'm looking for speakers which focus on clarity, and sound crisp/clear. I wish for it to have fairly good bass. Would this be achievable without an AMP? Without an AMP, would the new speakers be a massive improvement over the stock speakers?

If you have other speaker recommendations, please feel free to comment.

It is possible without an amp, you just need to look for efficient speakers iirc..
The focals should be good for running off a headunit.

If you are really worried about how they could sound, go and listen to them. Nobody can really advise you speakers.. everyones preferences are different. Listen to them, test them with songs you love, and you should find the speakers for you quickly.

an amp would definitely improve things. as would 'acoustically-treating' the doors (solid speaker mount, sealing the service holes & any other air-leaks around the speaker, use of sound deadening, diffuser added directly behind the speaker).

talk to some specialists in your state when you can. but have a read of those reviews first & go from there

Those speakers that you mention are very good speakers

I have a pair of C5 and C5 components too in my jazz

But tbh, it will be a waste of your hard earned cash if you are not running an amp

they won't last long because they will be power hungry and burn their voice coils

I've been looking for those links.. tried to get to them from the mea forum.. no bingo there >.>

But yes, the above links have a range of great speakers to use under $300 or under $600. But as I said before, just listen for yourself, everybody has different tastes. I'm starting to not like my current speakers.. even though they are cheap.. so much treble fatigue ><

So yeah, hit up wherever is closest, test some with your favourite tunes, and pick based on that. nobody else should make the decision for you. After all, it's your ears in your car.

From my experience, just get something brand name that sounds good. You can't say "these are the bes" because everything sounds different in the situation that you are in. I have spent more then the $400 on my front speakers, but that was because I know that I need those to be good before I can do anything else. But I also know that a budget is a budget! The best thing that you can do is to go into a good audio shop and listen to the speakers for yourself. You'd be amazed at the difference that there is even within $20 each way. Different speakers are made for diferent preferences, so you need to see what sounds right for you. :)
