Hey guys,

I'm due for my regular service and I am unsure about the difference in the Honda semi synthetic oil and fully synthetic oil. I did a search and found that Honda full synthetic oil (5w 40) would be better performance wise and smoother driving compared to semi? Apologies if this is already covered but just want to get some knowledge from he experts.

I am going to get it serviced at Honda to keep the servicing consistent.

Btw my car is sitting on 70,000 on the clock.

Thanks in advance

If the dc5r is still under manufacturers warranty then go honda full synth but id up the weigh to 10w/40w... If honda has them.

If out of warranty, then IMO castrol edge sports 10w/40w full synth...

Once u pop the 120+thou klms, then u can g semi synth... As the car is getting older, close maintenance is a must.

6-10k klms change intervals.

Thanks man :) . is that the rule of thumb that over 120 km u must go a thicker oil? If so why is that?

Not really a rule of thumb.. Just depends on your style of driving, climate, distances etc.

As the engine runs it consumes more klms, wear and tear internally.

Therefore close maintenance will make your engine last to normal conditions.

Thicker oil just assists in high rev heat / cold start protection.

Whereas thinner oil or lower weigh is really only for newer cars with lower klms and or full race motors.

There is alot of debate about oils etc.

Every1 has there own opinions and experiences, and eventually u will create your own too.

Thinner oil is better for cold start as it circulates through the engine faster, you need thicker oil if your engine is burning oil or your in a really hot climate.

As I tell people when they come into work and ask what oil to run;

- how many km on the motor
- does it blow smoke/consume oil/rattle/make noises etc

These answers, along with what the manual recommends will determine what to run.

But to be honest, at 70k kms just keep running whatever grade the service manual says.
