DIY: Install power steering oil cooler
Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Aim: Install power steering oil cooler to keep oil temperature to a minimum and to aid in the longevity of all the power steering components.

Required:
- Pliers
- Philips Screwdriver
- 10mm Socket with Ratchet
- Rag or paper towels
- Few clamps
- Genuine Honda Power steering fluid
- Collection Container (Recommended at least 500ml capacity)
- Power steering oil cooler
- Additional Power steering hoses (You may need to purchase these and then cut to size)

Steps:

1. Park your car on level ground, i did this in my garage but if you dont have a garage you can park under carport or on nature strip will do fine also as long as its flat and you have sufficient space around the car to work.

2.Jack the front of the car up and support it with jackstands.

3. Remove the front bumper, if you dont know how this DIY shows how its done on an EK but its pretty much the same for a DC2R

4.You will need to drain the Power steering fluid from the system,DIY can be found here

http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?15335-DIY-power-steering-fluid-change-(EG-EK-DC2)&highlight=power+steering+cooler

5.Once the fluid has been drained from the system you will need to look for this near the power steering fluid reservoir

You will need to remove the rubber hose that does a "U" bend as this is where the oil cooler will be attached to.

6.I found an old oil cooler in a box from a car i scrapped a few years ago so i made good use of it. You can also buy an oil cooler kit from ebay etc if you dont have one laying around like i did.

7.Find a good place to mount the oil cooler in front of the a/c condensor so it is in the path of air flow when driving.

8.Once you have decided on a spot and mounted the cooler it is time to run the lines from the cooler to where the "U" hose was that you removed earlier, there is one inlet and outlet on the cooler and where the "U" hose was, it doesnt matter which way round you attach the hoses! You may need to purchase some power steering hose and cut to size to join all the ends together, once again i had some lying around that i used.

9.Use small hose clamps and clamp off all the fittings, ensuring there tight as you dont want any leaks as the power steering lines are under abit of pressure when the car is running.

10.Reattach the front bumper bar.

11.Refill the power steering reservoir to the max upper level line.

12.Start the engine and the fluid should be sucked in, turn the wheel to full lock both sides several times to bleed air from the system and refill the system again until to the max upper level line.

NOTE: You will need to add more than the recommeded amount of power steering fluid as some will be drawn into the oil cooler.

I suggest checking all the hoses for leaks after you have finished and have taken the car for a test drive... if any leaks are found re-tighten the clamps furthermore.

Nice one.

You can get those oil coolers from early model Hondas. Funny thing is Honda stopped fitting oil coolers to cars built from 1994 onwards (from what I've seen) and just looped them as pictured above..

Thanks, from what i have read the GSR version in USA have the power steering oil coolers fitted as standard but not on the type R's, its funny that they were not fitted to the type R's as standard being a race type car??
