Hey everyone, need help with my 94 vti-r. It just turned off whilst driving, have had the NRMA come take a look and he said its got no spark and a prob with either the distributor or coil.....just changed the coil...still not starting!!!!!
Have been trying to work out if it is the distributor or not...error code i get from the ECU is 1 long flash, 8 short flashes...this shows up as the abs blinking though...not the check engine light as i have read it should? I could be wrong but would really appreciate it if anyone knows what to do from here!?

okay so i figured out my abs needs fixing and that can't be why the car isn't starting? Does anyone have any other ideas? no check engine codes come on at all!

from my understanding ignition system is pretty much (forgive me if the order is wrong?)
Ignition Switch, Battery, Ignition Coil, Ignition Control Module, Distributor, Leads, Plugs.
Normally you just keep ruling them out one by one (in any order) until you find the culprit.
ICM and ignition coil are both part of the distributor so if you have cash to burn you could replace the entire distributor in one hit and rule out all three but it may be costly depending on where you go.
if you are getting a CEL look it up in google. one long flash plus 8 short ones would be code 18 yeah?

Thanks guys...thinking to replace the icm now....have replaced the coil, dizzy cap and rotor button and none have fixed it. Dash lights and electrics all come on. I get no error codes from the check engine light....18 was from the abs....so I'm worried that there is nothing wrong with the icm as I would get a code for that right?

ICM will not always give you an error code in the ECU

Just got a quote from Honda, ICM is $532 to buy and needs to be shipped from japan...all the other shops I've called can't get one much sooner and its still $300+ to get it off them....I'm worried to fork out all that much if it's not definitely the problem, anyone in syd with the same car and nice enough to let me borrow theirs to check if it works first??? Would really reallllly appreciate it! Can repay you in beer/alco or a diet/exercise plan if that's what you're into! (am an exercise physiologist/dietitian) :P

make sure that if you are removing the distributor to do this on a bench, you draw a straight thin line across the gap where the distributor meets the head so you can easily line it up again when you're done. don't wanna accidentally over advance/retard the timing haha.

so did you ever
- check the main PGMFI relay
- check for PGMFI codes
- check the coil and ICM
if so what where the results

Also replaced coil. Don't know how to check those things, checked for ecu error codes and nothing came up...only abs codes which were totally unrelated. What's the pgmfi?

If you're still unsure what to do it may be a good idea to get someone with experience to have a look at it for you and diagnose the problem before piling any more cash into it.

well it sounds like you've checked everything in the ignition system and it all either checks out ok or has been replaced..
so you have apparently covered the common causes. time to move on to things outside the ignition.
could the fuel pump have failed/is failing? not sure if anything in the fuel system has been suggested yet..
Chantelle
20-04-2012, 08:25 PM
Someone has suggested crank angle sensor and cam angle sensor....do these sound like viable causes? Fuel pump prob doesn't sound like it could be preventing spark at the dizzy?

no but it would stop it from starting or cause it to shut off while driving..
so you're 100% it's getting no spark? or no power to the distributor? forgive me if I missed it but how did you check?
crank angle and cam angle sensors would cause problems if they went bad but I can't see how they would prevent spark either..

Nrma tested the spark for me when it first happened. Also Used a spark plug tester and did everything on the video someone posted a couple of pages back.

Engine immobiliser? Blown fuse?
Advanced your timing too much and fouled your plugs :)?
....Disconnect positive on battery and see if it sparks you?

Engine immobiliser? Blown fuse?
actually, as simple as they are these are quite likely. I know that a failed immobiliser can cause this problem because it happened to my VTi-R ages back when I first got it.
+1 rep

All the fuses are fine, immobiliser wouldn't let the engine crank over (which it does), no spark BEFORE the plugs :( wtf its doing my head in!!!! Didn't think it would be this hard to solve!

well I think just about everything has been covered now. you might need to do some further testing to get more info before we can give anymore suggestions.
got any friends that can give you some hands on help with the car?
also for the record when my car had the immobiliser issue it was cranking over but not starting, not sure if yours worked the same though..
probably worth looking into if you dont have any other ideas..

Thanks yeah had 2 mechanics look at it last night with no success...sucks so much, has been a great car til this! No idea where to take it now! ? Can't remember the brand of alarm...I know that it won't even let reds come on if the immobiliser is activated..all the electrics are working fine, reds come on and it cranks over. Mechanics said they could smell fuel being delivered whn they were trying to get it going so not a fuel pump issue either!

might be resolved but...
check the immobilizer on the key. that might be the problem. have you got a spare key to try this out? program on the key might have played up. it allows to crank but not to turn over.

actually
post 1996 DC2 uses the IMMO-AO system, if the IMMO system cant read the key, No Cranking and No Injector Fire and Green flashing key on cluster. Defenantly no Cranking
a 94 VTiR will not have factory Immobiliser
