Hey dudes,

*Apparently* (according to a mechanic mate of mine), adding 50ml of vegetable oil to your fuel tank every month or so helps with lubrication of the engine.

As far as google is concerned, vegetable oil seems to relate mostly to diesel engines (in which theyre doing 30:70 or 50:50 VO:Diesel) to try and save on fuel costs. I wouldnt even consider a 30:70 or 50:50 VO/Petrol mix.

Anyway, can anyone confirm or deny this 'theory' he has? He may well have been referring to diesel, but he told me to do it with my Civic, which i'm not keen on without confirmation.

Cheers ;)

Seems a bit odd.

I know that in a diesel you run a synthetic 2 stroke oil in about a 200:1 ratio and it helps keep the engine healthy.

I'm confused as to how adding oil to your fuel is going to increase lubrication of you Motor.
Fuel doesn't affect lubrication, and Oil doesn't affect combustion.
Both systems are seperate, idealy.

The VO/Diesel mix is as Google says, purely for saving on fuel costs.. Has nothing to do with keeping the engine in check.

My mechanic advised me to put an egg cup of 2-stroke in my '86 corolla carby for each full tank lol. I did it because I trust him, never heard of vegetable oil though.

It's possible the oil would give some benefit to the fuel.. A cheapo Injector/Carby Jet Cleaner of sorts?

Yeah that's what I assumed I never noticed any difference though. Was a fkn great car either way. Miss it so much.

most likely wouldve simply been doing the job of valve saver fluid, lubricating the valve seats, and keeping them cool, which in turn reduces detonation.

In leaded fuel, the lead acted like an upper cylinder lubricant, because they used soft valve seats, and in diesel, sulfer did the same job. However these days, all diesel is low sulfur, so people run 2 stroke oil to offset the reduction of sulfur.

would help prevent corrosion of the fuel system.

2 stroke oil i mean, wouldn't put veg oil in though.

Liquor? I barely even know her!

Haha, seen many people with that T-Shirt around.

But yeah, i've not found any real evidence of it providing any sort of benefit, at least not to petroleum-fueled engines. So I'll give it a miss and ask him where he got the hardcore drugs he's obviously on.

Unless he thought the Civic ran diesel.. O.o

Huh? The reason why you add oil in 2 Strokes is because of the way the lubrication system work - i.e. the fuel charge moves around crank shaft before being swept into the combustion cylinder - hence you need oil in the fuel charge to lubricate the rod and shaft bearings.

A 4 stroke system (diesel or petrol) already has oil pumped into the cylinder valve train for lubrication. Adding oil into the intake charge will simply just 1) dilute the fuel 2) gum the intake unnessarily.

Why do some mechanics recommend these dumb thing?

I used to put 2 stroke in my rx7 every 2nd or 3rd fill up.. Helps keep the seals lubed. Not sure about a piston motor though..

I would say to make the thing break more, so they get more work >.>
Else, Crackpot theories.
