View Full Version : 90-91 LS Taillights - Pink lines? GONE!!!!
__arjay__
28-02-2005, 09:51 PM
Hey.
I was stumpling accross g2ic.com like always and have been finding a way to get rid of my stupid pink lines on my 90-91 taillights WITHOUT taking the taillight apart like most of the DIY. Anywho.. This requires your taillights + some Castrol Super Clean Degreaser (g2ic.com recommended).Bcoz they dont seem to sell it in Perth i went with Grease Release Series 500. According to my research Castrol super clean degreaser was high in alkaline. So therefore i went in search for something equivalent.
Heres how to do it.
1. Take taillights off car
2. Remove bulbs and harness
3. Mix 1 part degreaser, 1 part WARM water (hottest tap can create)
4. Pour it into your taillights
5. Swish around for a few minutes
6. Repeat 3-5. again (after water has cooled down)
The degreaser turns/bleaches the pink lines white. I did each taillight for about 15-20mins until i was satified enough.
Here are mine.
http://members.westnet.com.au/intencity/images/Gen2Teg/Comparison.jpg
And these are another pic of some1 else's without the flash.
http://members.westnet.com.au/intencity/images/Gen2Teg/Final.jpg
In my opinion i hate the altezza / after market taillights bcoz they are just too much. I love the stock taillights, they make the Gen 2 Teg a Gen 2 Teg. If you know wat i mean.
Anyway.. Good luck to those who try it. There isnt really anything to lose except for your pink lines not turning white. Oh and im not sure if i should of posted in the Articles thread. If so, I hope u dont mind moving it :) But in here would be more easily seen.
The real article from g2ic.com is located HERE --> http://www.g2ic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114284&page=2&pp=20

dude! that looks sick..im gonna do that on the weekend..looks so much more cleaner..so i just have to look for a degreaser with high alkaline and i'll be right?? i don't wanan do something stupid..and perhaps clear out the whole tail light out..knowing my bad luck..that would probably happen!

28-02-2005, 11:41 PM
rofl..
nah i doubt u would clean out the taillight.. the degrease is kept in a plastic bottle so u shouldnt be scared. im not sure about the alkaline thing, it was just that wen i was researching a similar that was one of the main descriptions.. i didnt want to spend money on something that didnt work..
Anyways.. it takes no time at all.. u just need to let it dry for awhile. You could use a hair dryer if u want to make it dry faster or with the hot weather we have in Perth, im hoping that will completely dry mine out.
anywho ill post a few more pics of other ppls from g2ic.com and soon on my car in the day.

Umm.. Only little foggy patches if you havent left them to dry.
I left them to dry all night and kind of hair dryed them for 20 mins and they were still foggy but i think after a few days they would be fine. But maybe not put them on until you know they are completely dry. Say 2 days outside :)
Heres a pic of mine now mounted.

yes there is.. if youre talking about 92/93 tails then you have to open up the tail light by puttin it up in the oven and heating up the glue.. and then taking out the orange lens from inside.

Crap! I rekon you should keep on pouring the degreeser into it till it turns white! looks like this is the begining of the end for Altezza's? I'm kinda getting over them too, not only that but winter is on its way and that means more rain and when there is rain there is a pool of water in my Altezzas, not as bad since I took them appart and re sealed them! does any one have pics once they have been fitted to their car?

Hey I was bored this past sat day so i decided to perform the clearing of the pink lines, I used degreeser at first but seem to take too long and didn't work all that well, so I used Maguires wheel cleaner and I can say that both lights only too me half an hour to do! lol it was so bloody quik so if some one out there is thinking of performing this I would recomend using the wheel cleaner, it saves time and efort......
Must try

Great write-up!! I like the look of the tails cleared cos its not rice (like altezzas), but my LS is burgundy and i prefer the pink lines, i think they just suit the clean lines of the body and the colour flows a lot better.

okidoki....i have a little tragedy...
ill try and post some pics up but for now ill describe what happened.
i carried out this procedure on my left tail light using the exact product that FR33K used which is the Kenco Heavy Duty Degreaser. My issue is that only HALF of the tail light turned white. The indicator side of the light stayed pink but the majority of the rest of the light turned white. AND this was after about 1 hour. Ive tried all things and made sure the water was hot etc but to no success. I even tried bleach and the Macguires wheel cleaner which has made it fade slightly but still very clearly shows pink lines. I havent tried the right light yet so from the rear of my car it looks a little silly because only 1/4 of my tail lights are white. HELPPP :o)

mix 2 parts degreaser and 1 part turpentine for instant results, dont leave it for to long coz it will eat away at the white lines

I love teh the cleared lenses. I have a custom set made for my Teg, basically we hacked up my Leak-tezzas and made custom ones. They are painted the same color as the car, with 4 round lenses, kinda a Cyber-ish looking lense.. only for show though

I still rekon using the Maguire's non acid wheel cleaner! thats what I used and only took like half an hour to do both lights, it worked so well it even cleaned the insides of the tail lights looking like new, and most of all it didn't harm the white lines!
Highly recomend in using this to clear the pink lines!
go ahead and try it!

If it just has an orange lense you have to open up the tailight and yannk the orange plastic lense right out! and then you have to re-seal the whole thing! takes a bit of time and you have to be careful not to break the tailight lense!

hi all,
after my problem with having only half of one tail light turn white, i tried fanatk's idea of using 2 parts degreaser with 1 part turps..... it worked a miracle. Not only did it fix the other half of the left tailight but COMPLETELY did the right tail light in literally 30 seconds.....i strongly recommend it. As soon as i figure out how to attach photos ill post some up... if someone could shed some light on how to do this it would be appreciated...

ohhh myyyy!!
There has been some serious adjustments from the first remedy.
But i guess its good to test out wat works out best, but that takes you taking a risk on buying a new pair etc..
Your best bet is going for a strong degreaser and hot TAP water.. and using new water every few minutes.. If that doesnt work.. try boiling water.. Then if it still a problem.. Its most deff your taillights...
My suggestion: Start of slow and easy.. then work your way until you reach perfection. You dont want to mess it up, yur best of getting it right the first time.
Good luck!

nup...just straight out 2 parts degreaser 1 part turps. The degreaser water combo was working fine for half of my light but the other half stayed completely pink... within 30 seconds of swishing round the turps/degreaser they were completely white. Fr33k.....i would be very surprised if the turps/degreaser combo did not work because my lights were stubborn as shit and the lines still came out....

so i just had a read of this thread... pretty kool stuff (bringin it back from the dead yo)
i was hangin out 2 do it 2 my 93 lights which r sittin next 2 me atm, as my car came with crappy CF altezzas!
qouple of questions though... i read on here and G2IC, that i gotta open up the light, and remove the orange strip. now as compared 2 the 89-91 lights, would rmoving the orange just clear up the lens rather than just make it white? im a bit confused, as i might b thinkin that doin the 89-91 will just make it white instead of pink.
also, would the 89/90 lights fit straight on2 the 92/93? im thinkin bout just goin 2 the wreckers, and gettin an older set, 2 save me from openin up my current set.
edit: if any1 has any pics of the 92/93 done, can use post it so i can grasp the diff.
cheers

im fairly sure its a straight swap and yes it would be alot easier to get the 89-91 tail lights and bleech them white. the last thing u want is to have to mess around wiht pullin it apart and hopng it sticks back together, Try sell the wreckers ur ones for the 89-91 ones, u might get it cheaper.
if i were u id just go with 89-91 lights, they also look better IMO

The LED thing sounds like a good idea, I was looking at how to do it as I have tried some LED replacement bulbs, and they are not as bright due to the design of the ones i got, so am thinking of going LED all the way, just need to finish my time machine first so i have the time to look at it, my wife is so not a car person.. but really, am thinking of making a kit for everyone, will come with circuit board and leds mounted, anyone got a set of lights they want to sell cheap ? dont want to kill mine just yet :) Oh, and the lights people have cleaned out, they look awesome, will do mine i think.

I did my lights tonight. Looks greeeat! :D I just used some "5 star degreaser" which I bought from Big W in a 3 (maybe 4) litre bottle. Its pink in colour and has detergent in it (which pissed me off cuz it took so long to get the bubbles out of the lights!). I just filled up the light, sloshed it around a couple of minutes and let it sit then washed it out. No more pink lines! YAY!.
If youre using the same stuff make sure you dont re-use the old degreaser from one light to the next as it doesnt work as well. You need fresh degreaser for each light.
EDIT: oh, were not talking about the pink stripes anymore. Sorry I didnt read the last few posts. Good luck with your lights wkdteg!

grr got my set of 89-91 lights 2day
tried using some 5-star heavy duty degreaser that i had lying around
sprayed a fair bit of it in2 each light, added the hot water, and sloshed it around for a bit. let it sit, washed it out, repeated the process a few times...
AND NOTHIN!!!
the red and clear parts cleared out a bit, but the pink just turned to red!
washed em out, tried a couple more times still nothin
so i left em in the pegola to dry out over nite
prob try something stronger next week

I've said it b4 and I will say it again, Maguires wheels cleaner!!! also I think you might be using just a bit too much water this might be diluting the mixture of th degreeaser and not leting it work properly, try the maguires stuff with a bit of water ratio of like 2 parts maguires and 1 part of water that means less water than the maguires stuff......
Good luck bro ;)
PS: Ladies please behave I know it is a bit frustrating when some one makes an un called comment but you really should lear to take it like a man and let it be, most acassionally the other person is just joking so dont take it too personal. :)
Cheers!

just spent another hr tryin again
used some of the 5 start stuff without water... that didnt work
tried some motorspray prepwash without water (used up the whole can)... still nothin. ive got some meguires hot tire shine... dount thats gonna work
LoL i give up for now. i think it mayb becuase the lights seem fairly new. yeah i relise there 89-91 (15-17 yrs old!) but when i picked em up yday, they were in mint condition like theyde been off the car within a yr or so.
imma just leave it atm, try again during summer after they get some UV exposure... mite help. i cant afford 2 buy any more products atm anyways
with the stuff ive got handy, im gonna sand down the little writing on the lenses (using 400grit then 2000grit), and give em a wipe down with some metal polish, then a shining with some meguires plasticX. c how they turn out.
thanx for the help alex

Note the question mark.
Theres a big difference between "It would look shit house in real life!" and "wouldn't it look shit house in real life?" I've never seen it so I can't comment, hence why I asked what it looked like in real life, pictures can be very decieving. BUt instead of answer you had a spaz.
Nice work on confirming my opinion that your a total retard.
dude seriously

ouch... scourer
i used bout 50ml of 5star degreaser with a cup of hot water, swirled around for 10-20mins then washed. brought em up like new
also started going over the outside with degreaser and a steam gun, cleaned up all the dirt, and built in grease, but i ran out of degreaser, so couldnt get it all done.
i was goin thru the cleanin isle of safeway on sunday, and thought that CLR mite do a pretty good job at cleanin lights aswell. just mite have 2 dilute it.
once uve done the inside, follow the steps in this link and do the outside
imma get started on it now
