Well presently i have a 1999 civic h/b sohc non vtec, i was going to be selling it and building an eg with a b16a in it. I asked a mechanic and they told me to keep the ek. With out explaining why. Are there any benefits of the eks over the eg's. Mind you i would probably never do the conversion in my car but he was under the impression i would. Are there any differences b/w these to? I was expecting the eg's to be better as they are lighter arent they? in the eg suspension would be changed. What are your guys thoughts. I know i havent worded this correctly but hopefully you can understand what i am trying to get at.

is your mechanic a honda specialist or just a generic mechanic.

He could be of the impression that the EG never came with a b16 powerplant and as such immediately assumed the EK would be an easier swap simply b/c EK4 is available... who knows...

sorry i am no mechanic so mechanically i am clueless about the actual swap. But you are right about the EG chassis being lighter... but the chassis would be older obviosuly to any EK you could find...

Either car should do........just compare the weight differences :)

i'd take the ek for the superior torsional rigidity. my one concession to comfort would be an interior that doesn't rattle and a less flexy chassis.
who wants to help me make some bracing for my wet dishrag dc2??

people who own an EG are going to tell you to get an EG but ppl with an EK are gonna say keep the EK so you probably wont get a good response to this question.
Doing a conversion into an EG will require an EG9 (or eg6?) half cut which are getting rarer and rarer to find so keep the EK and get an EK4 half cut, easier to find, slightly more powerful and the EK civic is newer, especially yours being a 99 model,
Unless you can find an EG with the conversion already done... they aren't that expensive these days, under 11 grand

Although for it to be legal, you will need to get a B16a2 from a 1999 Spec car or newer. Thus leaving you with the one option of getting an EM1 Halfcut or engine, as they stopped making EK4 in 1998. This could ultimatly prove quite costly for a 1999 B16a2 engine.

Personally because I own an EJ(EK shape) im gonna say keep this car because the facelifted hatch looks hot. Although in this instance it would prove cheaper going the B16a EG route.

search for a while and get urself a genuine eg6, imo not worth the money in doing a conversion to b16a unless u get the eg really cheap. oh and yea, EG looks better :D

Can someone point out where it says that you need an engine from the same or newer year? I can't find this info on this on the RTA website. I would like to know how they could even tell what year the engine was from if all the b16a's from 96-00 are the same.

If your stuck on keeping the EK, one possibility is to buy a B18B out of a 99 Gsi Integra. Then perform a frankinstien conversion by bolting on any B16a head for a good 180hp. Thats is if you want VEETAK.

IMO He's right...

There's pretty simple logic behind it...
That being, the EK is simply a much better car. (No offence to EG owners)
& you get more car for your money...
Same money spent, it's faster around a track due to stiffer chassis.
(Even with it's weight penalty)
It also lacks the split rear hatch which always breaks the latch in the glass on the track without enough body bracing.
If the desision is based on looks, then it's emotional, not logical.
Both make fantastic little toys when built correctly.

why not put a B16A or even B16B engine in your EK?
or B16A with B16B cams etc etc

personally i like EK more than EG~
EK seems looks more sporty~

I say that both the EG and Ek are nice looking cars. At the end of the day its up to yourself on which model you prefer. But personally I rather the EK.
Thats my 2cents

Well I humbly think this is the easiest solution: Sell that car and get a VtiR.

But then again people are so attached to their cars that they'll never give it up. If you're bold and have enough courage to give it up, then it's a good solution instead of looking for half-cuts and going through lots of cash & headaches.

my mechanic is a good mechanic specializes in modifying hondas. I really cant afford to do a conversion on my ek, How ever i can pick up an eg for about 2400 there fore giving me alot of room to play with.

Hi . Im a EG hatch back owner.....

*hi bren*

Anyway - my opinion is.....sell the car. Get a EK4 vtir and get the whoel package in one pre-made bundle. Cuts out time wasted, money wasted - will be more reliable etc etc. And you will be instantly satisfied.

Now we're talkin'! I agree, either sell it and get an EK VTi-R, 'cos you can get 'em locally. Or keep the EK and bolt parts from the VTi-R, the parts should be more readily available. And it will be more reliable, a better car in many regards, not least of which insurance cover.

I prefer the look of the EG. But you don't get to admire it when you're sitting in it. Looks of cars is overrated.
