View Full Version : [CU2][CL9] Redline 5w30 from Amazon

EuroGraphite
24-04-2012, 12:38 AM
Important bits:
1. Group 5 Fully synthetic oil from Redline. Other synthetics typically use Group 3 or 4 basestock.
2. 5w30 SAE - Recommended viscosity for Accord Euro in Australian conditions
3. ZDDP additives for minimising wear of engine components
4. At $130 (+$8 shipping) for 12 quarts (approx 11 Litres), this is insanely cheap!! This works out to be around $12per litre. For comparison, 5 litres of Mobil 1 (5w30) will cost about $85 from supercheapauto. The Mobil 1, using Group 3 basestock, works out to be $17 per litre.

Link http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-5W30-Synthetic-Oil/dp/B000T9TLZM/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1335190475&sr=1-1

Anyways, as the other thread became slightly heated and was shut down, I hope this one can avoid the same fate! I bought 24 quarts for my euro, but then bought another lot for my missus' car. Using this oil will cost about $15-20 more per oil change but is much much much better than the mineral oil normally used. Motor oil do have a shelf life (typically 4-5 years max for synthetics) so keep that in mind if you are planning to stockpile!

I just completed my 1000km checkup and requested the servicing dept to change the oil and oil filter. Even at this stage, you can 'feel' the improved smoothness and response. Note that this oil is overkill for our cars, but our engines WILL benefit from it. At the current prices, its money well spent imho.... Short of doing an oil analysis and dyno run, I can't verify it, so its just my opinion.

hth...

Thanks for reviving this and great summary. Just received my 12 quarts in the mail the other day..very fast turnaround! And just a reminder for people wanting to browse other oils on amazon, this deal is just for the Redline mentioned above as they have a pricing error so shipping is $8 (for every 12 bottles) to Aus. Any other oils will have the usual costly shipping.

Group V? Anyone know how this woukd hold up on the track?

I remember someone saying before that group v oils will not last as long as group IV oil in terms of longer change intervals?

Thanks for the links, especially the first one. Great read, very comprehensive.

For those interested, here are a couple of really good web pages on oil certifications (http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible_amsoilFAQ.html) and general info on oils (http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html).

Just reading more into it, this redline has the same HTHS of 3.8 to the mobil 1 0w-40 (but redline 5w 30 is a bit thicker than the mobile one esp at higher operating temps). So Given that the redline could be had cheaper than buying mobil1 here locally, its an easy choice. Ill be ordering this soon.

Maybe with the recent mass ordering from ozhonda members, US customs suspects a drug ring and are having the bottles tested at an FBI lab. But it all seriousness, hope it clears soon man.

Yep, I parcel it is.

Mine is in the same situation, except its stuck in carlstad. The amazon helpdesk replied to my email, saying its normal and will be delivered as per the schedule. We shall see!

In any case, mine was just updated to say it has received some info from the shipper electronically. This iparcel mob is significantly slower than the DHL service used last time. I am guessing these guys would be a lot cheaper too. Not going to worry about it too much, as i paid through paypal and amazon tends to be pretty good customer service wise.

I just ordered 12 quarts. I've heard nothing but good things about this oil. Hopefully it gets rid of the vibration and roughness I'm experiencing. I'm currently using Motul 8100 and it was good to begin with, but after about just 1,000kms the car feels a bit rough again. There have been a number of people complaining about Motul 8100 breaking down too quickly and I'm beginning to think they're right. Please Redline, make my engine smooth!!

Just use DOT4 as you need to use an equivalent or higher rated fluid. DOT5 is incompatible with other fluids. DoOT5.1 is compatible but it tends to absorb water moisture very quickly, not much point on a car driven on the street.

Honda brake fluid is DOT4 and guaranteed to be compatible with the seals. Otherwise, I have used Castrol Super Response DOT4 as well in my Euro. But mine is a 2004, so it is still too soon to tell if I have damaged the seals.

Is 5W30 a bit thin for the Euro?

If you look in the manual (at least for the CL9), it's the recommended thickness. Of course, it'll take thicker oils, which the service centre will use anyway because their cheaper but nothing wrong with 5w-30.

Group V (5) based synthetics are usually not compatible with petroleum or petroleum fuels and have poor seal swell. These are used for air compressors, hydraulics, etc. It's the Group IV (4) PAO based synthetics that make the best motor oils. They are compatible with petroleum based oils and fuels plus they have better seal swell than petroleum. Typically PAO based motor oils use no Viscosity Additives yet pass the multi-grade viscosity requirements as a straight weight! This makes them ideal under a greater temperature range. One advantage of not having to employ Viscosity Improving additives is having a more pure undiluted lubricant that can be loaded with more longevity and performance additives to keep the oil cleaner longer with better mileage/horsepower.

Isn't Redline a Group V oil?

yes the redline should be a group V oil. as for its compatibility with our cars id be willing to listen to anyone else who has had experiences.

EuroGraphite
12-05-2012, 04:15 PM
By itself, that may well be the case. However, just because the oil use Group 5 basestocks doesn't mean it won't have additives and other basestock to provide the desired performance characteristics. This oil has been used in the u.s. market for many years with great results. You only need to have a look at forums such as http://www.bobistheoilguy.com to gauge its performance.

This Redline oil far exceeds what we need on a day-to-day basis. The stock honda euro engine is unlikely to stress the oil, especially with the recommended oil drain intervals. Unless your engine is super funky (supercharged, turbo charged, super cams, etc) this oil will be perfectly suitable.

That statement is misleading. Group 5 means any fluid that not group 1/2/3/4 as such... It could be *anything* so it's a pretty big stretch to say that ALL group 5 causes burns/leaks an shit.

Done the 10k service with Redline oil change a week ago..
The engine runs a lot smoother and I'm now getting 850k from a full tank 98 fuel..
Definitely worth the extra penny...

Just did my 40,000km service with Redline oil. Definitely smoother and quieter than Motul 8100, but it didn't get rid of the vibration in the gas pedal at low revs like I had hoped. I guess I'll have to live with that because a full gearbox flush with Redline D4 didn't help with it either. Still a noticeable difference but I don't know if I'd pay the regular aus price.

anyone bought any more oil via amazon?

shipping is still around 8 dollars!

wierdly, its only on the 5w-30. got a second car that needs 10w-40 but shipping is $66 for that.

Yeah, it's a shipping error on the 5w30. Even the D4 is charging $66.

if only i could use the same 5w-30 in the other car. save me a pretty penny in shipping :D

having said that, it is still cheaper to buy from amazon then from the sharks here down under.

Im using these filters (http://www.pureoil.com) because they are made in the usa. i found out the honda filters are made in thailand but with the japanese price tag, i decided enough is enough and ill just use some quality one instead.

I'm thinking of trying Royal Purple next. Redline didn't make my engine as smooth as I'd hoped and it already feels like it's breaking down after about 1,000kms. If Royal Purple isn't any better I'll have to accept Redline is as good as it's gonna get.

Had a more detailed look at the Penrite racing oils, they are about the same (or slightly cheaper) than the redlines

http://www.penriteoil.com.au/engineoils-products.php?id_categ=1&id_products=276

So much zinc in that oils it'll rival redline for protection.

Redline does have a higher flashpoint due to its full Group 5 base compared to a group 4&5 mix in the Penrite.

can you please create a list of the oils and which category (group 3,4 or 5) for us noobs so we can relate to when purchasing?

can you please create a list of the oils and which category (group 3,4 or 5) for us noobs so we can relate to when purchasing?

As much as I want to, the oil companies rarely display the type of base stock they are using and it's usually a mix.

But as a general rule, unless specified on the bottle, the cheaper synthetics Shell Helix Ultra/Castrol Titanium etc are group 3, even then there's rare exceptions depend on oil weight, for example, 0w40 synthetic oils normally require a good portion of group 4 or 5 in the mix to reach that grade.

So it's really complex sadly. But whenever a brand actually displays their base stock as group 4 &5 (Redline/Amsoil/Mutol/Penrite), we jump on it if its a good price.

For older engines. At least that's what the manual suggest. 5w30 also works, but they recommend it for 25° down.

I would say so. "Racing" stuff are usually made to much lower tolerances, and is designed to deal with much higher stress and temps. Rated for higher mileage as well.

Any idea where to get the same oil for the same money or similar grade oil?
