For the last 3 visits to Ultratune, they have told me to get a CV joint replacement because mine is really farked and can snapped anytime. Question is wtf is a CV joint, I've been quoted for $200 by UT but still do not even know what it is or whether or not the quote is a ripp off or what? Please give me some feedbacks!

Cheers

I am assuming a CV Joint and CV Boot are the same thing?

My CV Boot was cracked, to buy a replacement one I had to go to a CV specialist, because stupid Honda didn't authorise aftermarket brands for my car ('95 and up) and one from Honda would have cost over $150 and you get all other crap with it. The part you need to buy will generally cost between $10-30 (I paid $15), but if you get them to install it (I was quoted $200 I think), it's quite expensive because it is apparently complicated and takes 2-3 hours. Good thing my father is a mechanic... ^.-

My father said if I had left it it messes up the CV or some mumbo jumbo, so it is best if you can change it asap.

Sorry if I'm talking about the wrong thing, but I hope this helps!

the Constant Velocity join is important, and that's all I'm gonna say becuase I'm not 100% sure on what it does. Something to do with changing the spinning goodness from the engine, into the wheels. The CV boot is just a peice of protection that keep the CV joint clean and stops the grease and stuff from within it escaping, if the CV boot becomes broken (which is easy, I'm pretty sure it's made of rubber) then it must be replaced, this requires removal of the entire front axle I beleive, so the $20 CV boot ends up costing 100's in labour. Getting the boot replaced now will be alot cheaper than having to replace the entire joint and anything it breaks when it dies and takes other things down with it.

The CV joint is what conects the shaft from the diff to the wheel WHILE allowing the wheel to recieve power AND turn

Sorry if im repeating... the boot is the rubber "sock-like" thing that covers the joints, to keep the grease in. Once that rips, you will slowly loose grease and slowly eat away at your CV.

If your CVs are damaged, everytime you go full lock the joint would click... the more damaged it is.. the more hectic the sound coming from it

Here in melb, a reconditioned CV joint + shaft combo (reconditioned inner and replaced outer) are $120 per side. Labour should be not much more than an hour per side .. which is what... $50-100 depending on mechanics

While a boot is about $20

thats write,
if the boot is only split, then a $10 part need to be replaced and more grease added. if the joint itself is rooted then you need to replace it. $100 for a non gen joint, $400 or so gen ( I think )
its like a half hour job and wheater you replace the boot only or the entire joint the labour is exactly the same. its just labour you have to pay. easy job but MESSY.

LOL One problem is leading to another, might end up leaving with 4 new tyres.

Anyways I'll be heading down to both Ultratune and Honda for a quote this coming monday. If both give me the rough same estimate, I might just go with Honda, nothing beats genuine cv joint rubber.

Ultra tune are rip offs. Atleast the one near my place here in melb. They wanted to charge me ridiculous fees for stupid shit. Then, my university has a *survivor card* which as a student gives u discounts at all major retailers within bout 25km radious of the uni.. ultra tune is down the road... they refused to accept it and my 15% discount ... not going there again.

With cars, ive delt with many mechanics. Ive found its best to find a single mechanic you can trust and rely on. Find out prices yourself. Call repco/burson.. even honda dealerships and find the price yourself so you KNOW your not being stooged

Yes genuine honda parts are great... but 3/4 more expensive than non genuine, i dont think the quality justifies that much. They're not really worth that much, its just Honda Australia put a 40% inflation fee on all parts. my 2c.
