View Full Version : DIY Servicing: Required tools

Hi,
I want to buy some decent tools for home servicing, but don't know what tools are required for some jobs, i.e brake rotor and pad replacements.
At the moment i have:
- Crappy socket set
- Ratchet stands
- Oil filter clamp
I was hoping people could put together a list of tools they use for certain jobs, that way i can start buying.
One thing i need is a trolley jack, i was going to buy the super cheap 2500kg one on special for $100. But then i noticed a lot of people are raving about the costco one, which i think is a 1,500kg alloy twin piston for $160. Then i came across this kincrome 3000kg low profile jack for $270 from East Coast Auto Spares: http://stores.ebay.com.au/East-Coast-Auto-Spares-Pty-Ltd/_i.html?_nkw=trolley+jack&submit=Search&_sid=300363005
What do people think? Which jack?

*imo* get a higher rating jack (3 ton is enough). dont want to cheap out on jacks.
You will also need a set of axle stands. again, good quality is the key here. I would also add a set of car ramps to the shopping list. nothing beats just driving up and having that height without all the dicking about.

A nice set of ratchet spanners is very handy, and some quality sockets
also if you use Honda oil filters,an oem filter tool is great. No slipping or fuss

once you have used quality sockets, you will never go back to cheap stuff.
i recommend a set of 1/2" and 3/8" wrench/socket kit. that means you have pretty much any socket to get a nut off.
also look at your local repco store, they have 50% off sidchrome. im not sure what their prices are like, but if they price them anything like bunnings, then it isnt too bad.
also for working on old cars, you will want a set of bolt grips (http://www.irwin.com.au/tools/bolt-extractors/bolt-grips). without those you will be stranded if you ever round a nut. before i knew anything about those, i spent 8hrs on a ls400 (x3 persons) working with rounded nuts. once i bought them, i had them off in 10secs flat literally

Thanks for that, i will pop down to repco tomorrow to check out the stock.
Should i get a metric or imperial set, or a mix of both?
I don't mind the total tools brand, they come with lifetime warranty and they will swap broken bits in store, as long as you don't mistreat them like using a normal socket on a impact driver. I also really like the moulded cases they come in (EVA foam i think, same as repco tools), the bits fit in real nice.
I also like the bahco 106 piece set, but i don't think you can get replacement bits if you break or loose them though.

Honda bolts and nuts are metric well should I say most cars are metric. But when you buy socket sets and all some gives you imperial too. Better off buying a kit with just metric sizes.

Metric is going to be sufficient for your day to day service, however imperial is nice to have when you have the odd nut that is neither a 12-13 and you may be able to get away with using an imperial piece.
bahco is another good brand. very precise and no nonsense honest tools. made in sweden if im not wrong, whereas sidchrome is taiwanese made (my dad swears that they just arent the same as the aussie made ones!)
as for torque wrenches, i havent used a sidchrome one before, but ive been wanting to get a good decent one. but these tools certainly add up when you want to buy the best possible.

most my tools are sidchrome, kincrome, snap on.
sidchrome tools are good but the new range are ok compared to their old range of tools
kincrome tools pretty decent.
snap on tool AWESOME.
most of mine are lifetime warranted.
you might also want to check them out aswell.
do a price comparison on them.
also most of them come with lifetime warranty. if thats something you want double check with the seller.
also check out the repco range. they also come with lifetime aswell.
3/8", 1/4" and 1/2" sockets. well i mainly use 3/8" and 1/2"
in normal socket and deep sockets
i know sidchrome does a socket set which has all 3 size wrench. i think its a 64 piece metric and AF kit. <----- might be worth it and handy to have.
Pilers - long nose, combination and multi grip
Socket set
Spanner set
Screwdriver sets all sizes
or even just get a tool chest.
oil filter remover i have like 5 different kinds but the one i use most is

jack and jack stands
i personally go the 3000kg range - just a state of mind thing with safety
a 600mm long breaker bar is handy aswell.

reckon the local repco/sca/bunnings will sell them or do i need to go to an independent tool shop?
also, i assume they come in different sizes?

if its a cheap one just dont chuck them on the floor.

There is a good discussion on the costco $160 trolley jack here:
http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/showthread.php?41832-COSTCO-JACKs&
It is actually made by arcan. Some guy has been buying out one of the costco stores and selling them on ebay, lol, see here:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Low-Profile-Hydraulic-Floor-Trolley-Jack-Hand-Lift-1-5-Ton-1500-kg-Garage-NEW-/180729884143?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a14572def&clk_rvr_id=346180904461
On another note, i might buy myself the 3,000kg kincrome jack stands from east coast auto spares, they are pretty well priced and do not have a deep V at the top, they are nice and flat, see here:

the one from costco is decent. owned by my friend and he leaves it in the rain sometimes.
pretty good for its price. i would go for a costco one over the non alloy type any day.
also its good enough for home. no point having a big one for home. i got a big one at home. its good but its effing heavy.
i also decided that im going to buy the costco one aswell.
went there and they had no more of it.
since now they do im tempted to go and buy it.
but im currently busy. so i guess its gotta wait.
plus only getting it for track day. next track day for me is Honda Nats.

Rang repco to see if they have the 64 pce set and they don't, they said it's normally $325 or something. Half of that is about $170. On ebay they are about $200. I'm going to pop down there anyway to check out what they have.

So I went to repco and they hardly had any sidchrome at all, and the 64pce is a special order as they don't usually stock it and it costs about $320.
So I went to total tools, they can do the 64pce for $250 which is not pad at all I think. They also had the 94pce bahco for the same price.
I really like the bahco and it includes spanner and screw bits which the sidchrome doesn't, but you cannot get replacement bits if you lose a bit, and it does not have as many metric pieces as the sidchrome. So I think the sidchrome set is the better option. I do think the bahco bits are nicer though and ratchet feels better than the sidchrome one.
Thoughts?

thanks alot for your kind offer. im trying to find out the price of shipping, as my GP now wants one too as he has been looking for a used one for quite awhile now. have to find out shipping charges before i know whether or not it is worth it.
as for the 64pcs set, id be more inclined to get the following:

21pcs 3/8" drive socket set (http://www.sidchrome.com.au/products/21-piece-38-drive-socket-set-metric)

All together they are $294 + postage which is a a fair bit more than $205 + free postage for the 64pce set on ebay or $250 from total tools.
Plus you get imperial pieces too in the 64pce set, but it is missing the 20mm piece, i don't know why they didn't include it.
As for the costco jack, let me know how many you want and we can organise something. From the ebay ad here (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Low-Profile-Hydraulic-Floor-Trolley-Jack-Hand-Lift-1-5-Ton-1500-kg-Garage-NEW-/180729884143?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a14572def&clk_rvr_id=346180904461&clk_rvr_id=346404689568#ht_8911wt_1344), it says the shipping weight is 24kg, which means auspost will not ship it.

So i have decided to get the following (unless people say otherwise)...
5000kg kincrome jack stands (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jack-Stand-Safe-Working-Load-5-000Kg-2-Piece-K12072-/260932188908?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc0c53aec#ht_1049wt_905) - they give a bit more height than the 3000kg jack stands
Costco trolley jack - about $160
For socket sets, i think i will only get metric not imperial. On ebay sidchrome is better priced than kincrome from the look of it.
For 1/4" and 3/8" normal and deep sockets, check out these 2 almost identical sets, the sidchrome is cheaper than the kincrome:
Sidchrome 57 Pce 1/4&3/8" Dr Socket Set Metric-19230 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sidchrome-57-Pce-1-4-3-8-Dr-Socket-Set-Metric-19230-/261029509728?pt=AU_Hand_Tools&hash=item3cc6923a60#ht_3630wt_1396) - $159
Kincrome Socket Set 57 Piece Metric 1/4” & 3/8" Sq Dri 13357P (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Socket-Set-57-Piece-Metric-1-4-3-8-Sq-Dri-13357P-/380394090211?pt=AU_Tool_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5891412ee3#ht_1524wt_905) - $215
For 1/2" metric sets:
Sidchrome 33 Pce 1/2" Dr Socket Set Metric-14210 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sidchrome-33-Pce-1-2-Dr-Socket-Set-Metric-14210-/261029523560?pt=AU_Hand_Tools&hash=item3cc6927068#ht_3486wt_1139) - $169
Kincrome Socket Sets 25 Piece Metric1/2" Square Drive 13417P (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Socket-Sets-25-Piece-Metric1-2-Square-Drive-13417P-/270882934347?pt=AU_Hand_Tools&hash=item3f11e18e4b#ht_1775wt_905) - $189
Then there is snap on, which new will cost $800 for about 26 normal sockets
What do people think of the above, sidchrome or kincrome?

i say get the sidchrome set *imo* slightly cheaper, lifetime warranty, and with the money you save, you can get yourself a set of irwin bolt grips.
you get the deep sockets too with the 1/2" set. might not need them on the car unless you are working with exhaust, but around the workshop they can come in useful.
if you have time and be arsed, go to your local pawnshop, they might have a few sidchrome sets about.
kinchrome jack stands look good at 5T. should be plenty to make sure they dont fail on you. by the way if you are using them on paving, can i recommend you get a piece of plywood and cut out just nice for the jack stand base. you will avoid cracking your paving/concrete when you load the car on it.

Thanks sensei, probably will go sidchrome. I also do need good screwdrivers and spanners/ratchet spanners.
I thought these looked ok:
Kincrome Pro EVA Tray Screwdrivers & Accessories 34 Piece (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kincrome-Pro-EVA-Tray-Screwdrivers-Accessories-34-Piece-/261014767137?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3cc5b14621#ht_1771wt_2111) - $198
As for spanners, i would probably want a set of geared and another set of non geared. I think kincrome have reversible geared sets, are they worth the extra?
Between the sidchrome and kincrome, should i just choose a set at the best price?
Also let me know if you are after a costco trolley jack!
Thanks again.

For oil and trans fluid changes I use a pair of 4WD ramps. Its far quicker as I don't need to pull out the jack or the safety stand.

A nice set of ratchet spanners is very handy, and some quality sockets
also if you use Honda oil filters,an oem filter tool is great. No slipping or fuss

They only cost about $10.00 which also fits the Honda motorcyle filters!!!

i currently have 4WD ramps, but will need some wooden extensions to get me up there.
looking at those builds, i would love something to elevate my car up nice and high. a good 6-10" would be perfect.

It's a pretty cool place, they've got lots of cheap factory seconds and stuff. I got my 9 drawer tool chest for $160 with only a small dent, just make sure you examine the items carefully. Last 2 times I went, they had 1/2" 72 tooth ratchets for $18, looked like they had no defects.
The costco jack shits all over the SCA one, it goes under low cars and gets to full height in only 5 pumps. 1.5T will be more than enough if you're just working on cars, I'd think it'd be enough to lift the front of a Accord Euro too.
Also, Teng Tools sockets are definitely worth a look at. I've got a set of 1/2" shallow+deep sockets and they're just awesome, they've got a great matte finish and ooze quality. Personally, I'd buy Teng over Kincrome or Sidchrome. Have a look at the catalogue on their website, the prices are really good. I believe you don't need the receipt to claim warranty, just go to a distributor and they should swap the piece over for you if it hasn't been abused too hard (but make sure you check this before buying).

Depending on application, alot of brands will do the job. The main different with ratchets of different prices is normally the internal strenth/number of the teeth. for example : i have a worth 1/4 inch ratchet and it feels strong and the teeth are fine almost like silk ( slight exaggeration but it is smoooth as ), i also have a TTI 1/4 inch ratchet and it feels just as strong but there are less teeth, which means it has to turn further for it to "click". Out of pure lazyness of not wanting to change ratchets i put a pipe over the tti ratchet for more leverage and was undoing fairly tight 16mm head bolts... You dont need snap on or other 'high' end brands to get the job done. At work a few of the guys have alot of snap on gear, mainly because we have a snap on van come directly too us and have 'sales' on selected items every month plus have a lifetime warranty on almost all items. I've heard great things about koken sockets, well priced and good quality stuff. End of the day its all about preference.

Thanks Rayle and ceekay101 for your feedback. Rayle, i will definitely go the factory, thanks.
I created a new thread to discuss the costco trolley jack, with pics, see here (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?164539-Costco-(Arcan)-Trolley-Jack&p=3421957#post3421957).
I went thru the same journey as you adamc11 back in 1990.
Prior to that I only had a cheap and nasty Taiwanese socket kit, a few screw drivers here and there and cheap pliers.
Back then Snap On was the only widely avail top quality tools avail, with Aust made Sidchrome ( sockets ) and Stanley ( screwdrivers ) being the more budget but decent quality tools avail with KC tools being the next rung down in terms of quality and price ( manufacturing precision and QC in Taiwanese factories no where near the stds of 10 years ago let alone now ).
Bought my Snap On 3/8" ratchet and socket kit with extension bars ( still using them now, still v happy with them) as well as a set of Snap On screwdrivers ( big mistake only use them as spares now ).
Fast fwd to the present; my toolkit today comprise of a real mish mash of many brands as I always saw tools as lifetime investment and bought tools to suit my budget and need as I went along.
For the affordable tools avail today, all the brands mentioned in prev replies ie Kinchrome, SP, Teng offer great value for $. Even the SCA Calibre spanners are very honest and much improved better than the nasty superworks spanner they replaced. I buy a few of those SCA spanners in large sizes ie 26mm for hardrace toe arms ( only $14-15rrp, $10 or so on special ) The same in Kinchrome ( which looks and feel the same btw ) would cost $30-40 in such a size and something like Snap On would be knocking on $80 if not $100 alone.
Teng Tools often have specials on say a deep socket rail kit 3/8 drive for $40-50 or so; check out their website for the mthly specials.
If you plan to spend good $ ( ie snap on budger range ), it's hard to go past top brand European Tools like Hazet ( Sockets ), Stahwille ( spanners ) and PB Baumann ( screwdrivers ). None of these brand are bling bling/high shine etc like Snap On as the European maufacturers' philosophies and target audiences are vastly different. The above are the brands I have bought and used for many years and 100% happy and impressed with them, there are other brands also such as Beta and Fracom which I haven't tried.
It would be wise to spend the most on the tools you need and use the most ie 1/4" socket set, 3/8" socket set, small set of 1/2" sockets at least spanners up to 19mm , screwdriver set. Other less used larger size spanners and service tools that you dont use often you can get away with a more budget but still trustworthy quality items.
Another thing to consider is the rathchet head design...
When I bought my snap on 3/8 ratchet back then the socket release button wasnt avail on most bar the $$$ version but nowadays even the cheapies come with the buttons which is as handy as power windows in your car esp on 1/2" drives where you dont need to yank the socket out everytime. So try to get this feature on all your ratchets in 2012.
Number of teeth varies and fine teeth ratchets getting common and becoming std features in some lines.
The direction of the flick switch ie the ON / OFF position switch lever can go either way. I am so used to down for on and up for off for RH operation. Nothing bothers me more when my ratchets varies from one to the next while working on the car where I need to keep switching different racthets. If this would bother you also make sure you keep all your ratchet flick design consistent.
If you want to know more about a particular type or brand of tool or want me to expand on any of the above just let me know via this thread. I'm always on the lookout on tools for myself and frens getting into DIY anyway.

And is there any other good oil filter tools that I could buy from an auto store and which store?

Auto stores sell a few different types but for b series the filter location is a bitch and I find the oem one works so well if I cant use my hand

I've seen the aluminium race jacks at costco (sydney) but I think the jack is only rated for 1500kgs (steel jacks of similar size from super cheap are rated for 2500kgs) I have also read some on-line reviews saying it starts leaking oil if you try to lift stuff too heavy eg: try to jack up the whole rear end at the centre tow point.
But if you do buy one I guess the plus side is provided you maintain your costco membership all products have a lifetime refund guarantee

I was able to undo the filter on my 86 accord by hand, was hard though. Did it up by hand also as tight as i could. It's in a really awkward spot to use an oil filter clamp :P

It is only rated to 1500kgs but that's enough for jacking up a car at one end.

Bumping up this thread. I went to bunnings to compare the sidchrome and kincrome ratchets. They felt like rubbish! Mainly because they were both like 30tooth. I tried a bahco ratchet at total tools which was like 72 tooth, was silky smooth and felt a whole lot better.
Can anyone recommend a good high tooth ratchet?

Kinchrome do make a nice one, fren of mine bought an extensible one from a tool shop ( that stock a different Kinchrome line to Bunnings ). Not sure the exact tooth count but at least 60 teeth if not 72. Has compact swivel head with quick release. Bahco's head lot chuckier.
They sell a non swivel head with normal handle also.
I bought a 1/2" ratchet with the same design in hk for about AUD $20 or something ie a fraction of the price Kinchrome charges and they simply rebrand an oem design as their own.
SP tools sell one with a smiliar design but with an offset/cocked handle with high tooth count, $70 or so for 3/8" from memory.

I glanced through this thread so not sure if anyone mentioned Repco tools.
I've got a mix of Sidchrome, Bahco, Repco tools. Even the odd no name and Aldi tool. I'd seriously consider Repco tools for the home mechanic - you can get them on sale and they are well made. I also remember one of the car magazines doing some tests on torque wrenches from the top brands and the dark horse Repco came out tops.
And I've also got the Costco jack - best buy ever! Raises to full height in like 5 pumps and one of the lowest profile jacks for the money.

Because even after hand-tightening the oil filter, with all of the heat cycles from the oil and the thermal expansions and contractions that come with it, the filter becomes even tighter.
