Hi guys, long story short I flattened the existing castle nut with a hammer, is it ok to replace with a normal nut? What's the need for a castle nut?

as dorikin said, to fit the split pin to prevent the nut from potentially coming loose and spearing your car into a tree/wall etc when the lower ball joint pops out

Ah just took a look at the other side, didn't realise the pin actually goes between the slots of the castle nut. Where would I be able to buy a new one other than wreckers?

any decent bolt shop will sell castle nuts (not a hardware store). example these guys are in brisbane and sell them https://www.bolt.com.au/m12-125-bright-hex-castle-nuts-p-13631.html

M12 x 1.25 fine metric thread pitch (as per FSM). Even though it says quantities of 100 they sell them individually at great prices. So now you just need to find a similar store in melbourne

any Honda specialist workshop should be able to give you one for a pack of ciggies , if not free !
Workshops always have heaps of spare bits lying around.

Same thread and pitch - same 17mm head ...

But the upper nut is shorter, and slightly tapered.

^as above

But the nut needs a split pin to prevent movement of the nut and loosening...ball joints are under all sorts of stresses and they will loosen if there is no pin

only if you were in brisbane just go to wreckers and get some

I've had nyloc nuts on my balljoints for years with numerous track days. No issues.

No idea what grade nuts. East coast suspension use them so I'm guessing they work and they have for years.
