i have done some research on the net, and alot say the LX version of the civics are lemons.

I think the LX are the GLi equivalent.

this is an example of a guy who posted about his civic

What things have gone wrong with the car?
I own a 2001 Honda Civic LX.

The car cuts off with no warning.

After driving for about 50 minutes.

Rubber seal on front roof is detaching.

Echoing sounds from back windows.

Seat and boot locks inside not working.

Interior light color easily damaged.
General comments?
I travel long distances from my home so
I bought a Honda Civic for reliability.

Fuel savings was another reason for
buying a Civic.

Three weeks after a regular service,
my car began to stop whilst driving.

The warranty expired seven months and
I still owe the Bank.

This is my third Honda car I owned, but
my first brand new Honda I purchased.

This car has disappointed me in
the service it gave me.

I never thought after two years,
I would experience a major problem.

The Honda Dealer informed me,
the crank sensor needed to be changed.

I am afraid to ask the cost.

I am afraid the car will shut off when
I am driving home in the night.

I am afraid when the part is changed,
it will not last a serviceable time.

For the amount of money I paid,
I should not be with these fears.

and another one

What things have gone wrong with the car?
Started having continuous problems with "check engine" lights at 63,000 k.m. extremely intermittent air conditioner problems (dealer was unable to duplicate and took 3 months and 3 visits to fix) occurred at 102,000 k.m. cable that allows you to control opening of gas tank broke at 103,000 k.m. alternator failed at 105,000 k.m. both front struts had to be replaced at 135000 k.m. (leaking). I have contacted Honda and they say all above problems are normal for a car with that kind of mileage.
General comments?
This car is very fuel efficient, but extremely expensive to operate in terms of following the recommended Honda preventative maintenance and in terms of obvious unreliability. This car definitely has reliability problems and is not as reliable as previous model years.

yea i know

i have been looking to get another mid size family sedan and have done extensive research on it, and all the time i come back to the Civic,

i have a 1988 Mitsubishi Magna (believe it or not) and ive sustained none of those problems stated from our American cousins, just hope the Civic is as good as my Magna.

23-12-2003, 07:17 PM
Are you looking at the EK sedan? I have one of those and I can tell you right now that none of those problems I have encountered at all. except this window problem I have *i think* it makes that whistling noise like the window isn't shut properly but the windows are...I think it is due to poor repair when I had an accident

My Civic EK was very reliable, no problem whatsoever. Engine runs smoothly and I can feel the power :D

And I got like 9 ltr/100 km which is not bad for an old car.

none of the problems above happened to my civic. And when I sold it, it was running approx 115,000 km and it's still damn smooth. I would keep it if I had more money readily for my Euro.

Honda's are generally built pretty faultlessly. Yes there have been recalls, not many manufacturers haven't had recalls. The good thing about a Honda is that it won't break down twice a week like a lot of other manufacturers out there.

I've had mine for a year and a half, and haven't had a single problem. It is a 10 year old car and i haven't had to replace a single thing. That's good enough for me to recommend a Honda to anyone.

By the way, i've heard that US built Honda's don't have the same level of finish as the ones built in Japan. I don't really believe it but it's something i've heard.

Ummm... if you apply the criteria of one person posting complaints about a car on the 'net... there would be no cars left to choose from. Magnas Commodores and Falcons would be ignored - let alone Ferraris :P

Fairly stupid post IMO, because I can cite Civics that I have owned right back to modified '70s ones that were incredibly reliable.... not to mention the current one I drive.

And don't forget, if you treat your car like shit, expect the car to give you shit back in return!

clayton - keep your magna then and stop wasting our time :P

BTW - my '90 SiR, 257,000kms+, regularly thrashed to 8,000rpm, does frequent interstate runs, original factory B16A and tranny... for me it's no contest, I wouldn't touch a Bitsamissing with a 10 foot pole based on my own experiences with 3 of them.
