my mate paid $800 for brand new sets of 20inch rims / no tyres. from ozzytyres.com.au
Just wondering if that cheap or expensive ? or did he just get ripped? how much would anyone pay for a set of rims. thats without tyres.

whats your opinion on how much you would pay for a set of brand new rims?

Depends on the quality.

You could pay excess of $4000 for some sets of Rotiforms.
WORK or Rays Engineering usually $1500-$3000
And ROTA would do the same job for $1000

I'd personally say if he bought 20" Rims from some random Tyre/Rim Shop for $800 they're probably junk and he got what he paid for.
Not to say they're going to break on him.. But they'd be a very low standard of Rim.
Very heavy, high chance of factory defects, etc.

I think you're implying that your mate might have got ripped off. Boy how wrong are you... $800 for 20" rims is a bargain!

As said,

It depends on quality.

Another factor is how butt****ugly they are or are not. :)

Goes towards supply and demand. It they're hot wheels, places charge more - if not, they go out the door cheap.

$800 for 20's makes me think the rims are a basic design.

Whatever brand they're flogging, $100 for a 20inch tyre isn't something I'd trust all too much....

$800 = 80 bowls of Pho...

I dunno man, I'd rather 80 bowls of Pho...

I paid more than x2 for my 16s [Enkei RPF1s Matte Black] some years ago and personally I don't go for any of the cheap stuff especially rims and tyres... Personally preference but my safety #1 rather than save a little at the wallet then get killed moments later because my tires locked up and end up in the back of something solid...

King of bling or not icgaf, I bought some steel wheel nuts off em for some enkei's. Told em I didn't want shit as I be tracking the car. anyway 12 months down the track I've have now to replaced 6 studs. Turns out the threads were off centre and slightly too large. Wsn't a problem initially but each time they were rattled off an on they damaged the thread. Last time I rotatedthe tyres 6 studs were cross threaded. My tyre guy told me they are cheap shit chinese crap that they would have paid about less than $2 for the lot. Told me he seen too many of these nuts recently.

I wouldnt say rotas do the same job, have u seen them tests? jap spec wheels have much higher standards.

800 is too cheap for the rims to be of any decent quality and probably looks shite too.

I was in Bob Jane recently getting some fronts balance after some really shitty roads, and while waiting a customer was told that they no longer stock the 18 inch bling rim that had sold her a few years earlier. She had a cheap shit rim which was unrepairable !! she wasn't happy. Cheap rims may end up cost you double as it did in this instance

As in the are more robust if you crash? a wrecked rim is a wrecked rim to me. Doesnt matter if its buckled or cracked. Im not going to bother repairing it and I cant sell it for much either.

But on the other hand I have noticed a difference with light forged wheels. Whether the wank factor and drive improvement is worth it for the extra pennies? up to you.

I'll pay depending on the brand/quality. Don't cheap out!

WORK/Rays are slightly stronger, and a little bit lighter than their ROTA copies.
But do you 'really' need all that extra awesomeness when something 90% as good will do the job?
Sure you could argue that 90% isn't the best it could be, and support the legit wheels.

But a ROTA exceeds ALL requirements for road and even excessive track use.
Have you seen what ROTA sponsors? They aren't no cheap knockoffs.

I'll happily endorse ROTA because they make an amazing quality product that will suit everyone's needs.
But if you've got a fat wallet and want to feel that little bit more comfortable knowing you're rolling on the 'best there is'
Then please fork out $3000 for a set of TE37's.. Because i'll happily wear my GRIDs.

this argument isnt about rotas vs rays

its about not buying rims from bob jane. there is no argument for that.

No, this argument is about what you should pay for a rim.

And we can all agree that Bob Jane or any other overnight brand of rim is more than likely able to do the job.
However by comparsion it's quality is severely lacking.

So what do you buy?

^ Sticks the ****ing landing. +1 if I hadn't already +1'd you for your first post, sir.

Regardless of knock-offs or whatever kind of rim we're all discussing, we still haven't seen any pictures of these 20", $800 rims. So to the OP, please show us what kinda of 'groce bob jane' rims your friend bought.

$800 is a bit too cheap for my liking

you also said $1200 with tyres fitted? damn those tyres would have to be plastic to be $100 each for 20inch rims

i have 18inch rims and i paid $2400 with tyres fitted

CHEAPEST i can find tyres for my 18s are shitty lexanis that have nooooo grip whatsoever for $160/tyre

sorry but chrome 20inch rims = fail.

I once bought a set of wheels+tyres from Tempe Tyres in Sydney.
Basically the same as St George Tyres, Bob-Jane's etc.. They're all in the same basket.

I bought some 17x7s with 215/40/R17 Hankook somethings.
Rims are now on my Mum's Suzuki Swift, and as you'd expect there's nothing wrong with them.
Tyre's were a decent set of Hanhook directionals, gripped suprisingly well! Just as good as the GTRadial Champiro HPX's i had on the rims before them.

Long story short, cost me $1100 total.
Not bad i thought?

There's nothing at all wrong with buying rims/tyres in this discounted package, hell it's not like they'd be selling you a product that will fail in the first 1000km's.. And if you pick a brand of tyre you trust, what's the problem?
From all the Rim+Tyre packages i've seen my friends buy.. They always had a choice on tyres (Somtimes at an added cost ofcourse)

I'm going to be paying around 1,000~ (slightly less) for a set of 14" mags. tyres for that shouldn't be too much more than 5-600 :/ After that, when I get money, I'll probably buy some adrenaline re002's and chuck them on my 15's, for a track set
