Hi Everyone,

i just bought a used 2003 Accord V6. last saturday while driving the car, the transmission started to slip on an uphill and eventually halted. i stopped at the side of the road, had a smoke and started up again. it worked just for a bit then started slipping again until it complete decided it had enough.

i read in some forums that its a known problem here. my question is, who would you guys recommend and how much would it cost to fix?

Sam

Oh man
Id hate to be the bearer of bad news your transmission is no longer for this world
Itd he better to replace it - get another one secondhand
Im not a mechanic so i wouldnt know the cost/labour
Did you buy the car from a dealer/private owner? If dealer -should be warranty
When you bought the car - what colour was the transmission oil?

well, i've been searching online for a secondhand one and couldn't find one. then i found a guy up in clayton that rebuilds transmissions on a daily basis. he sounded really experienced and knowledgeable with real facts about the defects int he design of the solenoid valve in the transmission. when i asked him how much, he quoted me half the price of all the other garages that i called! i was kinda shocked at first and wasn't really confident, then he mentioned a couple things that made me decide to send the car to him.

hopefully all goes well and my beast is back in action soon.

I'd sell the car
V6's were prone to transmission failures

My bet your accord was around the 100,000k mark?
From my bad experience like yours and subsequent research...
Do a fluid and filter/screen change every say 50,000k and you should be good.
There is no mention anywhere by Honda about the trany fluid or filter to be changed!
I guess they figure in Japan no one drives a car beyond 100,000k anymore.

Honda Aust paid 75% of my parts as it had gone ex warranty and all servicing done at the selling dealer.
I still considered going reco myself and probably would have cost the same.
It was about $2000 but part of service and engine mount change as well.
Do you mind telling me how much the guy in Clayton charged incase it happens again?

Cars in Japan de-preciate at a much faster rate then cars in Aus

Read my thread re: auto tranny
http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?154787-CL9-amp-CU2-You-got-Automatic-transmission-*you-ll-WANT-to-read-this*&p=3080121#post3080121

Something like 10-20 MILLION Hondas were recalled around the world over the past 7-8 years due to the transmission failure.

Look, the Honda trannyfluid does NOT LAST 50kkms, following the log book is inadequate.

You're looking at a drain fill every 20kkm (every 2nd service). Else it simply won't hold up, especially with the V6 engines, it's torque simply kills the 3rd and 4th gear

like fredoops said flush the transmission fluids around 20,000km, but use the genuine honda ATF oil as it will make the transmission last longer. my car just came around to this problem now,
so getting a new tranny put in this weekend.

How many km's did most of your cars last till the transmission gave in?

The old ATF-z1 was part of the problem, it simply doesn't last the logbook suggested drain interval.

Don't flush guys
Just drain and refill :P
Hey Fredoops
What do you recommend for the old Accord 91 (models)
Would the old Z1 be fine or upgrading to the synth dw be a bit hazardous? Sorry fot OT

Z1 wasn't even around back then, pretty sure honda was just using old fashioned Dexon 2 fluid back then aint it?

hmm possibly, who knows haha?
I thought Dexron II was no existent nowadays
i might wing it and put in Z1 or bother some sale rep who has no ideas about old school Hondas
thanks for the reply man

^^^ pretty sure you can use z1 for old accords, else I'm sure dexen 3 replaced dexen 2 and is backwards capable.

The new ATF-Z1 formula is working perfectly fine on my accord. I have drained the old ATF-z1 out and refilled it with the new and so far the transmission isn't playing up yet. I hope the new formula helps and that the transmission with last me a bit longer. I have done abt 160k kms and flushed it at 125k kms

the new formula is DW1, Z1 was the old formula.

Did you do one refill or 3
Because you've only done 1/3 of the fluid

I'd sell the car
V6's were prone to transmission failures

They all seam to have problems. I had my 99 accord VTIL rebuilt at 120,000km and then was on its way out again as i sold it at 210,000km
