Is it lowered? Got aftermarket exhaust?
Might be exhaust piping hitting swaybar

Yeah it's lowered on coilovers and does have a exhaust, how can I check if it's hitting?

See where the exhaust piping goes over the swaybar and theres a decent gap, check yours and see if its too close or signs of rubbing

Would this cause a knocking sound though? It's pretty loud

I can't get a video but I can describe it, it doesn't start knocking at first then maybe after 30 seconds of driving it starts and when I brake the knocking isn't as loud and when I turn I think it gets a touch louder

If your sway bar gap is like that, you should hear the knock more when you turn right or when you straighten from turning left aggressively.

Okay so if this is the case how do I fix it

You dont know if its the case yet,you need to visually inspect to see if theres been contact or not
It may be something else as far as we know, just a guess at this stage

I'll check it out tomorrow but if it's the exhaust rubbing how is it fixed

Get the axleback pipe remade with a higher arc to clear it or ghetto style you can hammer it a bit to give clearance

So if I take the axle back off the noise should go away right?

I just sussed my exhaust and it's sits very close to the sway bar and the exhaust paint is rubbed off

clearly the swaybar is touching the exhaust piping. Go to an exhaust shop and get it adjusted/rewelded etc.

Check your rear trailing arm bushes. One of mates had a rooted set in his EF and that was causing some knocking sounds which resolved once they were replaced.
Otherwise you start with the exhaust as above, check your clearances, hangers etc, see how wobbly it is.

It's definitely the exhaust hitting the sway bar. Thanks for the help guys, going exhaust shop this weekend :)

Ok guys the knocking sound is back,
Its definately not the muffler this time, its comming from the rear right hand wheel and everytime im on the brakes the noise goes away so im guessing its got something to do with the brakes.
Thanks guys

Grab a mate to jump in the back and check to the noise.
Shake the wheels, check for movement at the top in and outwards + left to right. Check for anything loose.
Inspect the rear control arm main pivot bushings.
Check that the exhaust tip has enough clearance to the rear bumper, grab it and move it by hand to check.
Make sure when the exhaust was altered that its not hitting the body/chassis (to heigh).
I'd say when you hit the brakes what ever is makeing the noise becomes unloaded and moves further apart, like the exhaust tip/muffler on the rear bumper.

in all honesty my friend , DIY resolution will set you back more than putting it in to a mechanic to fix it , something like this cannot best resolved over a forum, even with an explanation from a professional.
i say save some dosh take it to a work shop and get them to have a look. this is coming from an apprentice who has spent to much money on using the cancelation process to resolve the issue, ( iacv issues mainly, to find it was an ecu issue)

I had this exact problem on an ef7. Took me a while to locate the noise, only came on after 30 sec of driving and disappeared under braking. It's possibly a missing clip for the rear brake pad to sit in there nicely, it could be moving around while driving.

Few questions I'd like to ask the op
Was it knocking previously?
Did you install anything rescently and noticed knocking afterwards?
Could be alot of things.
Bad shock/coilover
Rear endlinks or sway bar bushings (if equipped with swaybar)
Lose wheel nuts? (Happened to me a few times )
Wheel bearing taking a dump?

check your rear trailing arm bushing. just take your wheel off and you should be able to see if it's stuffed or not.

I had a similar knock in my rex, mainly on hard turns and alot more distinct on right turns. As others have said it was my exhaust hitting the sway. Which i merely moved, and resecured. All good. But without hearing the knock it could be anything.

Check you end links or sway bar bushes, if you had damaged trailing arms, the car would be all over the place, could also be your shocks too (remember the car isn't new, it's over 15 years old) and parts do have a lifespan and doesn't last forever
I had the same problem as well when I had the ef7, knocking was because of worm and damaged rear endlinks, they are a cheap part to buy, but a pain in the butt to replace (again, old age causes bolts and nuts to seize underbody)
