I cant believe im asking this but I just read something on the interwebz and it has completely thrown me on what i engine i now have...

I read that a JDM b16a has the numbers stamped on the line below rather then the generation stamped next the the b16a on the block.

so in theory a
B16A
1000001

is the first B16A and is of the first series and is a jdm model.

but the export models are marked
B16A1
XXXXXX

as if the 1 is moved up top is that right or am i missing something. i keep finding contradicting stories.

a JDM B16A will be stamped
B16A
1000001

this would be a different engine to a B16A1 and B16A2

stamped as so

B16A1
XXXXXX

B16A2
XXXXXX

ahh ok so a JDM B16A's serial number is not related to the serials of a B16A#

alright i get u now.

just degreased the engine and noticed what i thought was a 5 was just grit.... neatly placed.

so i actually have a
B16A
5million series.

should make finding bits n that a little simpler

would this make a SiR 2 engine? with 170ps or still the 160ps SiR 1??
anyways to tell what pistons are in there from the outside, then can try determine compression ratio.

^ borescope down the spark plug hole or head will have to come off.

the intake manifolds are different. So unless its been changed you can tell just by looking at the engine

Series 1

Series 2

Also, the oil runners inside the head are cast aluminunium on the S1. On the S2 they are extruded aluminium. This can be checked my removing the oil cap

ill try that,

my engine number is
B16A
52XXXXX

and says PGMFI on the intake mani, but they can easily be replaced.

so that would indicated its a S1 engine. Its unlikely someone would change back to that manifold, its normally the other way round. Changing to a S2 manifold on a S1 motor.

Check the oil runners to see if they are cast or extruded. Do you know what the difference will look like? otherwise pointless looking.

i guess its a JDM B16A since it has no number next to it on the top line.

but determining if its a series 1 or 2, im guession series 1 becasue pgmfi plate on the intake, and its a 5.2million number which is 4th gen civic 160hp model.

but the valve cover has been changed to a later one.

ill see when i open the cover in a few days, if the oil runners are cast aluminium (1st gen) or extruded (2nd gen)

also the clutch is hydraulic like a 2nd gen, but ecu is OBD0 like a 1st gen, ahaha even though all the 5 mill series should be obd1 LOL seems kinda mix n match.

the clutch is hydraulic because EGs all come with hydro clutches. This is in no way any indication of what series engine it is.

sounds to me like S1, but as you said you'll check shortly. Take pics of the head when the valve cover is off so if you cant tell someone else can help.

yeh i figured as much.

yeh ill go get a pic now.

also need to check my VSS.

is a bseries VSS compatable with a standard eg4 cluster (from a d15b).
or does it require the proper EG6 cluster?
