View Full Version : Automatic Drain Bolt

Hey guys, went and got some DW-1 Automatic Transmission fluid
Some know it all Honda guy said it was fine for my car (91 Accord)
Then went on about how i need to have Honda p.s fluid, brake fluid, oil etc.
I just looked at him with a (you ****ing kidding me face)
Then bought my shit and left

Anyways
Jacked up car, yada yada
Now the Automatic transmission drain bolt is a 3/8'... But the thing wont break open
I'm assuming its a normal thread... but it just wont break
I've read my manual and the bolt should be about 36 ft lbs
I'm pushing that hard that the transmission itself is moving...
I sprayed WD-40 on it... but no avail
I dont have access to air tools and even if i did the position the bolt is in, is pretty awkward as there is part of the suspension arm in front of it
Spent about two hours attacking it... Pretty fustrating
Any ideas/help is appreciated guys, cheers

you do need to use Honda ps fluid so your "you fukin kidding me" face was invalid.

do you have a 3/8 inch breaker bar or t bar? if you do either place a pipe over the bar for more leverage or hit the bar with a hammer to crack the bolt loose.

i pulled that face for everything but the transmission fluid :P
Back then Honda didn't even have Z1, or their own brand of fluid

Anyways back to the point
I've got a 1/2' breaker bar - the space is too small for the adapter (1/2' to 3/8') to fit (ill take a pic tomorrow)
Guess ill be going to Repco/SCA and get a 3/8'

Use a 3/8" simple bar (the one with the sliding head). Put it on and tap hard with a rubber mallet. The factory tightens it until it actually crushes the washer so it is quite tight.

just use a 3/8 rachet and if you need extra leverage just grab like a deep 16/17 mm socket, put it on an extension and slide the socket with extension over the ratchet handle and voila longer handle lol.

are u turning it the right way?
some ppl get under the car and start turning it the wrong way cause they think the have to turn it anti-clockwise when looking from above, then get under and turn it clockwise and strip the thread.
its surprisingly common on sumps and such.

Hey guys
Thanks for all your replies
After Another hour of fiddling i got it
Ended up removing the front right wheel - gave me a bit more leverage
jacked up the car
And bought myself a 3/8' breaker bar
Soaked the ****er in WD-40 for 10 minutes
And got my trusty mallet and went at it
The crush washer on the bolt was virtually melted to the bolt - it was more than 36 ft lbs of force on there
And to GU 357 - i spent a good 10 minutes wondering if it was a normal thread or if i was actually tightening it
But i got there
New fluid in - smoother transmission
Cheers guys - one less noob question to worry about LOL

if i had to count the amount of times i learnt that the hard way...
taps, especially too much cold or hot water.
