Sup everyone!
I'm Daniel :) I purchased the red EG with number plate "CYA 13B" (lol) a few months ago; I hear this car has been around ;) You might've seen me at Shift's track day at Wakefield earlier this year. I have the car only for racing/track day purposes and have big plans for it! I hope to race it one day when I have enough experience and confidence.
I'm here to connect with my fellow honda lovers, particularly the track-goers, share some of my progress, work and mods (I'm not a mechanic, just a hobbyist), and of course to learn from you all.
Here's a pic of my car today after a wash :)

LOL, love the plate. For one thing it is going to be A HELL of a lot more reliable than any 13b will be. I've never heard of the car though, wish i had the balls to go on the track :(
5 lug conversion is the buziness!
Welcome!

haha! I just keep the number plate on there for laughs. At this stage it is still embarrassing being overtaken by RX7s, but hopefully soon enough they won't be messing with me :P
Oh and uhhh I can't seem to make an avatar. Any ideas?? :/

Build thread commences here!
First I want to recount the story of my time with this car up to today, and then I'll keep the thread up to date from. It might take me a few days to complete this :P
So I got the car in May 2012, and it's quite fair to say it's a completely different car since then. It had a few days rego left, and needless to say I enjoyed it's last moments ever on public streets!
This is a pic of the car on the roads for its last night, in Canley Heights :')
http://i48.tinypic.com/xpsu3p.jpg
The car came with quite a few goodies. B16A2 done by Hanny's performance with AC and PS, dc2r 5 stud conversion, ASR struts, sound system (good for recouping some cash), etc. Also it had no sunroof, and a rigid, rustless body. It was a great platform for a track car.
Once rego ended, the stripping began.

Having the dash off also let me get off all the last bits of firewall insulation.
Eventually I just disconnected the hoses from the engine and pulled the whole radiator thing out in one piece. I then looped the ports where the coolant previously flowed through that heater radiator under the dash, with this silicone hose I got from a local hose shop in Wetherill Park.

Then replaced that dog-shit looking air filter with a good ol' proven aussie 3A Racing filter for 29 bucks :)

So next up was removing the gearbox. It was crunching badly in third gear and just wouldn't suffice for the trackday which was coming up (this was the Shift Performance track day in 2012).
We followed a thread on Ozhonda to do this one, which was really helpful! Big ups to Wynode for this thread: http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?12789-DIY-Tranny-removal-and-Input-Shaft-Bearing-change&highlight=shaft%20bearing
Here are some pics of supporting the engine when the T bracket and side mounts removed
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120609_092219_zpsa094295f.jpg
You can tell we were scared doing this our first time! lol. This actually looks a lot like Wynode's setup :P
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120609_095649_zps77644ed3.jpg
Then we employed a fourth jack to help out in case we dropped it. We didn't know what to expect.
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120609_100850_zpsd7c00e9a.jpg
But anyway we slid her off the dowels, lowered down with some rope and she was all good :)

http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120609_142443_zpsf41dcd62.jpg
Ended up trading the box 2 days before the track day to BYP for a reconditioned one with cash on top, and put that one in on the day before, which was a sunday. Talk about a mad rush!
Here we are putting some new fluid into the new box :) that pump device thing is pretty cool haha. But nowadays I just use a funnel with a long snout that gets down there in the VSS hole. Much easier and faster.
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120623_141757_zpsc857e575.jpg
And that's all that was done to the car on its first track day! Probably could've waited a bit more to get it better prepared, but the track day was locked in couldn't wait haha.
Here are some pics of the car at the Shift Performance track day June 2012.
The day before:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_1926_zpsc00a5af9.jpg
On the day:

That was a cold morning!
[IMG]http://instagram.com/p/MShudDzAv_/[IMG]
So on that day the car was on shitty street tyres, stock suspension with worn out shocks, and no proper racing mods like it has now. On my first track day I managed a 1:18.990, and was pretty happy!
collEGe_boy
10-04-2013, 11:42 PM
In between the that track day and the next, some extra (more important) stuff got done.
Installing Silver's Neomax coilovers which were purchased from Shift Performance. Doing it alone this time haha
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120713_135328_zps66751fd1.jpg
Quite a difference!
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120713_135356_zpsea1ed0dd.jpg
This is the setup I went with on the next track day:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120717_120235_zpscf5de3f0.jpg
Just kidding :P
I am pretty happy with these coilies. Car doesn't roll much, but the ride is not overly harsh, which is beneficial on some tracks. Particularly Wakefield turn 1...
Next: Wheels and tyres! Purchased a fresh set of ADVAN A048s from Tyres and More Wetherill Park. I went for these over the better A050s because it was only my first time with racing tyres and still not really skilled enough to appreciate the difference. Also I want to see how much better the 50s really are!
I went with 205/50 15 to suit my 15x8 buddyclub P1s. I was lucky enough to get the last set in white (the 5 stud limited edition ones) from Yonas.
Some tyre porn
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_2567_zps56328745.jpg
The difference turned out to be unbelievable...
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_2598_zps6fdbc224.jpg
This is how they looked fitted to the car, with the suspension all the way down.
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_2604_zps0a31a57d.jpg
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_2602_zps57116e69.jpg
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_2605_zps7a8f729e.jpg
The gap between the tyre and guard wasn't practical for track use, or any use for that matter, apart from hard parking ;) but it was great for a photo haha. Raised the suspension up a bit before hitting the track.
Next, this is how my oil sump looked:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_1874_zps9e7f98ea.jpg
so that gasket needed to be changed. Got a new gasket with some honda bond from Yonas and did the job.
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_1879_zps3a1e4555.jpg
Yuck! Gotta clean that shit.
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_1886_zpsafee42fe.jpg
So that turned out good, and the final mod before the next track day was the battery relocation to the boot.
This is what I was originally planning:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120724_145331_zps84f6d416.jpg
Yes that's a BMW battery haha. Got it for free so can't complain. I even custom made a little box out of scrap aluminium I had, which I was planning to use to tie it down with, but that never eventuated. This is what it looked like:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/20120724_163043_zpsbbd90080.jpg
I ended up tying it down securely further back in the boot (will get a pic soon).
I did this mod to improve the weight distribution. In the first track day I experienced a lot of locking up in the back tyres coming into the sharpest turn at Wakefield (turn 8) which is a hard braking zone downhill. I know this mod won't stop that, but every bit helps! The tyres should do the rest :)
And that was everything up to the 2nd track day! In a few days I'll tell what happened that day....... :zip:
collEGe_boy
13-04-2013, 07:50 PM
Nice progress
Thanks Yonas :)
So this was my battery relocation:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_0357_zpsc4a8889e.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_0357_zpsc4a8889e.jpg.html)
It's secure, just the wire turned out a bit too short. I'm gonna extend that when I install this battery switch:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_0358_zps479bc5f8.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_0358_zps479bc5f8.jpg.html)
which I got from non other than Yonas! From his private stash ;) just need to figure out how install it haha.
Some help here, Yonas??
Anyway, so I took the car out to its second track day (at a Wakefield "speed off the street" day) with this set up. I got a few laps in, enough to notice how awesome the tyres were ^^ until the motor blew :(. Pretty devastating moment. Here are some pics:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_3709_zpsa5912150.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_3709_zpsa5912150.jpg.html)

However, from everything bad comes something good. So after this motor, which had a very tough life, came a newer and better motor :)
I have to head off to ANOT (trance lovers will know) now, so more on that next time. Also got a load of other upgrades which will be going into the car over the next week or so! Exciting times :D

Whats the next engine/motor drop in?

14-04-2013, 04:55 PM
Well it's not so bad... I mean all I lost was a bottom end. Got my money back on the gearbox and I still have the cylinder head sitting in the garage!
I was pushing it pretty hard. Not hitting the limiter, but still. And it was a hot day. Probably the tyres also contributed to oil starvation, since I was cornering much harder than last track day and I didn't have a baffled sump. I was accelerating out of a corner and noticed the revs weren't climbing, then just before I let off the pedal it went BOOM! My cabin filled with smoke which quickly dissipated and I pulled off the side of the track. And to make it worse the track controller dude at Wakefield that's always mad was giving me a hard time! FFS!
But anyway, the car didn't see a race track for a few months after that, until I finally bought and fitted this new motor:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_5238_zps058d35ab.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_5238_zps058d35ab.jpg.html)
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_5237_zps45159d9d.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_5237_zps45159d9d.jpg.html)
This is the J's racing built B16B that Tyre King in Lansvale (Next to Shift Performance) had imported from Japan and was selling. I don't know exactly what's inside it, but some notable extras which I am aware of are an aftermarket Cusco LSD (which is bloody awesome) and J's racing 4-1 headers. I have had a look under the rocker cover and as far as I can see it looks stock.
Before the motor went in, the rear main seal and oil sump gasket were changed, upon which I noticed the sump has a baffle plate :D, and motor oil was of course changed. I used Motul 300v 10W-40 for it's first outings. Also the gearbox oil was red, ATF I'm guessing, so I tipped that and poured in some Motul FF LSD type 2 oil.
Other improvements before the first track day with the new motor:
Mishimoto 10-row oil cooler.
RDA front DC2R brake discs
Pics of these to come!
So these upgrades from the first track day were good for about a 10-second lap time improvement at Wakefield! I was astonished. I also became a much better driver in feeling exactly how much potential these tyres have. This was the third track day, and it was at Yonas' private JDMYard track day a few weeks ago. I set a lap time of around 1:09, but this wasn't officially timed. Hopefully I can improve on the next outing, with official time keeping.
And I have to say, it felt pretty awesome keeping up with the K24 EKs on the straight ;)
More pics of the car coming soon :) Now off to watch the Chinese GP! I hope Vettel gets smashed!! Little prick

Well I guess I left a few points out. Firstly I wanted to add to Jasemas's question of how hard I was pushing it (the previous motor), that the ECU for that motor had been chipped by ECU Man, and revved to about 9000 rpm lol. So for that motor I guess it was being pushed very very hard lol.
Anyway, with this J's motor I had no need for that ECU since it came with its own J's racing ECU! It has their official logo plate on it, so I already have a good tune for this motor. To run it I needed to get a conversion harness, so I got a Rywire. It turned out that I needed an obd1 to obd2a conversion, as opposed to the obd2b I expected. I guess this ECU was originally from a B18 or something, since B16Bs are only obd2b I believe?
And no I haven't had it dynoed. I wanted to take it to V&E's dyno day recently, but I busted a motor mount at the drag strip a couple of weeks before and didn't have the time to fix it yet! More on that in the next post.

Yes, it feels amazingly better! The power is substantially increased, and another contributor to the enhanced feel is the aftermarket LSD (previously I had no LSD at all). The traction is unbelievable. The power makes its way to the tyres so much better. When you're accelerating through or out of a turn it just pulls you right through it!
Also in that track day I wasn't running the J's racing headers since the flange was different to my old one, and didn't really have time to get it put on properly before Yonas' track day (which I really wanted to attend since it was only about 20 cars!) so I just ran my old X-force 4-2-1 headers. Hopefully we'll see an improvement with that as well in the next outing, now that the J's headers are on!

So as I alluded to, I did take the car to Eastern Creek drags a few Wednesdays ago. The commentators affectionately referred to my car as the red rocket haha. My car is not intended to be a race car, but I was just so excited with how it performed on the track that I had to do something with it, so I went to the drags a couple days later haha.
We had some issues with scrutineering because my passenger side window wouldn't go up (damn power windows), but we eventually got it up by powering the motor directly using jumper cables from the battery.
Here I am with my head mechanic JDM-derek in scrutineering once we had the window up :)

On my first run I passed the quarter mile in 13.731 seconds! Was pretty happy! My opponent was an R33 GTR who did it in 14.1. Bit of a surprise ay ;)
I'll link to a video of this once it's done uploading.
Then I came up against a ford who did 11s haha (let's not talk about that)
Then I came up against an Evo 8. This time I got a better launch and did a 13.600! The evo did 14.1s haha :D. unfortunately the video of this race came out very blurry :(
But on the way back to the paddock I smelt a coolant smell. Worried, I opened the bonnet and found this brown fluid everywhere! I panicked, but then calmed down once I noticed it was just a blown mount haha.

I have acquired some Hasport mounts this time. I'll be installing them in a few days (maybe tomorrow), and I'll write about this and other work coming up soon. Also I want to write about my oil cooler installation, and maybe get some help on relocating it!

Felt like workin on the car yesterday so I installed the hasport mounts :D they were such a bitch to install!
This is what I started off with:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6074_zpsb67e23f5.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6074_zpsb67e23f5.jpg.html)

Damn shit was sprayed all over the place! Cleaned that off, but couldn't get it 100% off :( and then got started.
But first, a pic of the oil cooler
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6078_zpsa5af2654.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6078_zpsa5af2654.jpg.html)
A good look at the mount once it's out:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6081_zps86d71495.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6081_zps86d71495.jpg.html)
And these are goin in :D
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6082_zps77b76a32.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6082_zps77b76a32.jpg.html)
Supporting the motor while the other side mount is being taken off (the timing belt-side mount was already in by then)
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6084_zps9d7a6046.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6084_zps9d7a6046.jpg.html)
The old:
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6088_zpsa18adecd.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6088_zpsa18adecd.jpg.html)

The new
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6091_zpsbc36557b.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6091_zpsbc36557b.jpg.html)
The silver bolt pictured came with the mounts. Much better than the stock one because it's longer so less chance of stripping threads in the (soft) aluminium bell housing.
http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag33/dciar55/IMG_6093_zps05aec8c2.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/dciar55/media/IMG_6093_zps05aec8c2.jpg.html)
Look at the difference in how the Hasport mount fits compared to stock. There is pretty much no play whatsoever! That's what made it so hard to fit. Lining up the holes so the bolt can go through the mount was ridiculous. Had to get the phone out and take photos so I could see how they were lined up lol. I should get one of those little mirror inspection gadgets...
And then I loosened the timing belt-side mount again to line up the torque mounts. I thought that would be easy like usual but no!! With the hasports on you can't wiggle the engine around at all! Lining up the torque mounts turned out to be even harder than the gearbox side mount == So with that I couldn't be f****d installing the rear mount. Gonna leave that til next time the engine comes out for a service. The motor should be more than fine like this anyway, with these mounts plus two torque mounts.
The end result :)

Now just need to install the fronts and get a wheel alignment.
On the rear left one (pictured above) I found the previous owner had put two washers behind each bolt. wtf... But then when I put the car back down on the ground I noticed why. The rear left wheel for some reason has way more neg camber than the right! Looks ridiculous. But I've got adjustable now so can easily fix that. I'll let the wheel shop worry about it :)

Yeah that washer trick is a cheap bandaid solution for the rear camber, not bad as long as you have enough thread

yeah seems a bit dodgy ay. Although it was only on the rear left, not the right. Is this normal?
Come to think of it, I have seen a few civics before where the rear left wheel looks more cambered than the right... hmmm

Which arms? LCAs? Camber arms? Both look fine to me, and the latter are brand new. Any other possibilities?

Thanks mate :) not yet! Wanted to take it the dyno day but hadn't had a chance yet to fix up my mount. If any dyno days pop up I'm keen to give it a run

you referring to slits or rotor vanes?
i dont think slits matter which way they go but vanes do.
seems like that rotor got straight vanes, not directional curved vanes.

Yeah Wakefield. Also one thing about my setup that I left out was my wheel alignment which I got just before the track day. I got it done at Bridgestone Select on the Horsley Drive in Smithfield. They did an awesome job! Would recommend to anyone. They have substantial knowledge about track setups, not limited to wheel alignments. I got some good advice from them. Not cheap though lol

What was the issue with rear camber? Also, got specs on the alignment you are using for track?

Still no idea! Obviously it's been corrected with the adjustable camber arms and wheel alignment, but I'd still like to know. Very old bushes, perhaps? I plan on getting all the bushes replaced before the next track day.
I can't find my alignment sheet atm but I remember it was about -3.5 deg camber on the front wheels and about -2 on the rears. 3mm toe out on the front and 0mm toe on the rears. The toe out felt great! You feel like you get more grip through the corners as you accelerate. If you let off you lose it.
Very quick EG, specially with 1.6 liter

Good job on the time mate! I couldn't get past 1.10 flat with my b16a. My mate tells me your motor was an ex J's motor?
Also how much did the wheel align cost?
