Hi, i have recently bought a 1994 honda accord aerodeck and have replaced the master fuel relay under the dashboard as i was having problems starting the car and read around that is a common problem. however it still has issues starting and when i removed the intake to have a look it was full of oil and in particular the small box that joins on to the intake pipe which i think is the air intake resonator. how could oil get in the intake and could it cause the issues of starting and is there anything else that would prevent it form starting?

i took some photos to show the problem.

Sounds like you need to clean or replace your PCV valve.

Is the PVC valve connected to the intake pipe and which one is it?

It should be located under your Intake Manifold and it looks like this:

I would inspect it before you buy one. It isnt expensive but still not worth the hassle, especially if it just needs a clean. Is it not starting at all? Does the car crank? Checked for fuel/spark/battery?

with any new (second hand) car i buy - i always do the following regardless of ks travelled.

replace

spark plugs
engine oil
transmission fluid
fuel filter
oil filter
air filter/ clean air filter
PCV

as for starting - look at a failing / faulty Igniter unit or ignition coil in the distributor.

If you have oil in your intake your pcv valve is most certainly the case of it being blocked
As it deals with blow off pressure
There's another pipe that runs from the rocker cover to the intake piping (snorkel) and if your pcv valve is bade then the pressure is going through that pipe (oil)
Instead of going back to the manifold do be used for the next combustion cycle
Mine has oil in the snorkel too - as my pcv valve was on its way out - it cause my car to have a hunting idle
And it was an after market part so i replaced it with an OEM on from my wrecked cd5
Make sure your car is cold and pull out the pcv valve - get some throttle body cleaner and soak the thing
And shake it, if you can hear a clicking or something moving inside - it works
And OEM pcv valves from the dealer are upwards of over $50
And be careful when taking out the pcv valve - the rubber gromet that it fits in the rocker cover might be hard and might not provide an air tight seal
So use some gasket sealer/rubber sealer
A good place for OEM/aftermarket parts for our Accords
Is TASauto.com
Shipping is $30 standard - but if you add up the parts and what not - it is much cheaper then going to a dealer
Good luck mate

there is no problem with the ignition, distributor and i bought a new battery. it does start but it usually takes 4 or five maybe more times before it starts. you can here the engine crank over but it doesn't run for very long. once its running there is no problem and the idle isn't hunting but has stalled a few times when in reverse or in D4 but i adjusted the idle cable and it seemed to fix that.

are your piston rings in good order?

there seems to be no problem with the rings as it doesn't blow any smoke and runs well without any misses or knocking sounds. i read that the fuel pump can also be a problem with this particular model as well.

You don't necessarily blow smoke if your rings are worn.

the only way to tell is with a leakdown test. If you're getting blowby it'll vaporise oil and send it back into the intake (through those breathers)

well i seem to have solved the start up issue for now, usually runs after 1-3 times if turning the car over but now the last few days the check engine light comes on. both times it has come on i pulled over staight away turned the car off. i waited a few minutes and started the car back up and after 45mins of driving it never came back on?
