Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Aim: Put EG5 Valve Cover on my EK3 with red paint.

Needed:
- 1 can of VHT Wrinkle Plus Spray Paint (in red for Rudi)
- 1 can of Molto universal Paint Stripper
- 1 can of Molto paint brush cleanser
- painting tape
- sharp knife
- oven

Disclaimer: This is what I did, turned out all right. You can't really mess up but it is messy and I am not responsible for environmental damage or your being kicked out by your landlord for smelly emissions or the like. So follow at your own risk and be prepared to do it over again, if you mess up.

Used paint: VHT Wrinkle Effect Spray Paint

Stripped cover with mit Molto Universal Abbeizer:
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/stripper.jpg

Put the stuff on the cover thickly. If you wanna keep simmerings, make sure to cover them properly. If not it doesn't matter.
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/stripping.jpg

Make sure to cover with seran wrap to keep from drying out prematurely.
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/folie.jpg

It will loosen the paint (Fingertest -- if you can move paint with finger through wrap on most places it's been on long enough), use Spatula to remove loose paint. Use brush for lettering. Pour paint brush cleanser on cover, clean of rest, rinse with plenty of water if you are not environmentally consious otherwise wipe of and use steel wool to clean of rest. Then take brake cleaner and degrease (after taping off)

Stripped:
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/ventildeckel-stripped2.jpg

Tape off and cut out:

Taped off:
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/abgeklebt.jpg

Create some sort of make-shift paint booth (you will need it if you work in your bathroom ... like I did and trust me the paint fog will creep out)
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/paint-booth.jpg

http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/paint-booth2.jpg

Do not spray thick coeats. Repeat. Push into oven and bake at 100°C. I left it in for a couple hours sitting at 50°. If wrinkle effect is not as desired let it dry out, sand down, add another thin coat, put back into oven.

Ain't I a great homemaker?!
http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/done.jpg

Remove take and sand wet.

http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/ventildeckel-done2.jpg

http://eurostylez.watt-is-dingens.de/storage/diy/ventildeckel/ventildeckel-done3.jpg

Hope it helps.

Other than that, VHT should be rather internationally available ... the other parts are German but equivalents should also be available all over the world.

The cover is not pink. It has a deep richt red not leaning towards orange. I like it. It looks nice.

If I get around to it, I will take a picture of my engine bay today.

is the paint still perfect now thats it worn in or have you noticed blistering, or flaking? Im quite curious about how hard wearing this paint is due to the fact that i like the crinkle effect but im concerned about the temp that the paint works up to

chartinael
27-05-2005, 08:05 PM
Valve cover has been on for about 3 months and 5000 km. So far no flaking. No blistering. Looks fine. Will let you know when first signs of deterioration occur.

Beauty.. nice work. Oh also.. is it a red red or more a pinkish red?

chartinael
27-05-2005, 09:38 PM
Beauty.. nice work. Oh also.. is it a red red or more a pinkish red?

I would classify that red as a reddish red without an orange touch to it. Doesn't look pinkish at all, It's just the flash and insufficient white reduction or whatever that is called. Don't have a RAL code to supply but it is a nice red. Most off the reds I've seen were leaning too much towards orange and I was looking specifically for a color that wouldn't do that. VHT red works for me. The color btw is very close to the color the EP3 emblems are.

I noticed I didn't post an installed pic. So here it is:

any1 knows whether the f22b1 cover is sealed with rubber gasket or sealant?

Im almost positive that it has a rubber gasket. it may also have glue in the corners just to hold it in place, but that would be it id imagine.

Oh and Chartinael that valve cover looks great, thanks for answering my questions... once i get around to it i think ill be using the VHT!!

Had a go at this with an d16a cover and normal paint - came out very nice - initally, going to try with wrinkle paint. I painted mine white and like i said initially was very good - didn't take long to become very dirty. Serves me right for colour choice. Your average paint stripper from supercheap etc. works very well, takes a few coats and about half a day if the cover is older, well that's what i found. Good luck pax!!

Pillow - did you remove the cover to paint it or just cover everything up and paint with it in the engine bay? How difficult was it to do?

pillow
24-09-2005, 09:11 PM
You pretty much have to take it off to get the wrinkle effect. If you want the wrinkle effect you have to put it in the oven or heat it in some way. Besides that it's way easier to remove than to mask everything up (spray paint will go everywhere, and masking everything so that nothing seeps through is almost impossible)

just diy serpo, all you need is a lil patience and be happy with not soaking your valve cover all over with one coat of paint. read the instructions on the can then follow them.
take care and take your time, its not particulaly hard.
if you dont know anything about taking your valve cover off just mark anything you remove with a piece of masking tape and pen so you know where it goes back on :)
allow yourself a whole day for it, it'll really feel worth it when you've finished

its not hard buddy, anywaiz to make sure you get a nice smooth even coat on your rocker cover always spray a single or two shot onto cardboard or grass as i do and that makes sure that the cans nozzle is clear and you can spray normaly, this reduces the chances of when you spray and then the nozzle clogs up and spits a shit load of blobs ruining that fine texture. patience is needed especially when you mask up the letters and cut them.

wildom69
01-05-2007, 11:48 AM
Yea...i agree with kazam. But if you wanna give it a crack then start by taking off the spark plug cable leads, then anything else thats connected to the rocket cover, and finally the screws. But you should try to remember where the screws came from too...you dont wanna be putting the screws in the wrong place. Hope that helps :)
