Hey guys i got a skunk2 mega power professionally installed 2 weeks ago ~ but since the installment some times when i accelerate or put my foot off the gas and then accelerate it makes popping noises. Is this normal or does my exhaust have a leak? It also pops some times on deceleration as well, Thank you ~ i also have to add that the popping is much more frequent after i filled up with 95 instead of the usual bp 98 this week.

IS the popping definetly coming from the muffler, or more from the engine bay?

How does the car idle? Do you have a check engine light?

I would start by checking for vacuum leaks by inspecting ALL hoses and also spark plugs for possible mis fire.

Is it a quiet popping or a loud backfire?

After installing a catback on my DA9 it occasionally "pops" when I shift or decelerate, nothing serious.

My old SSS used to backfire when changing, running too rich.

You might be running lean - does this acceleration popping happen on startup or once the engine's warm?

Popping on lift off is normal - it's your ECU cutting out the spark to combustion chamber and dumping the fuel into the exhaust. This kinda popping is good.

if it's running rich youll notice that over a short amount of time there is a lot of black dust on the exhaust and a little bit on rear bar

IF it's running rich you change o2 sensors or reset ecu.

Definitely coming from the muffler, car idles fine around 900. Will check spark plugs tomorrow :)
i think it might be running lean ~ the smell of petrol is strong, also loud back fire

then it is running rich, common when bolt on mods are installed without a tune

just about to say.

reset ECU is the easiest thing to do, and some times it will cure the problem.

to reset ECU,

or just to check the ECU for codes.

probably wrong but,

do you have a silencer? i had a cannon on an itr that would pop, but it had a silencer built into it. so the opening from the muffler was actually tiny even though the tip looked massive. the popping was from decel to accel. changing the exaust fixed it, though i never viewed it as a problem in the first place. so yeh, may be because of a silencer or the design of the exaust

Thanks i will reset the ecu tomorrow morning :) Thanks for the help guys !

Ok guys i reset the ecu this morning like the guide said, i also checked my spark plugs ~ Spark plugs are still in good nick, after the ecu reset i took the car for a drive, petrol smell from exhaust is pretty much gone :) but pops still occur some times, im thinking that maybe its normal then? anyone have a skunk 2 megapower exhaust to clarify if the pops are normal? Thank you

I think Pure_na is correct , i have a cannon muffler it looks big but the hole is tiny and from accel to deccel i notice some popping , and when engine is really warm it sound's even louder

here's a little sample of mine , but the microphone couldn't pick it up properly , will do one when driving.

dude, my jazz used to pop, when your in VTAK!! your afr is only like 12.7 at the beginning and then evens out to 13.7 further up, but if u were to then shift, the car pumps the wrong amount in just as it begins to change and now that ur foot is off the accelerator u have less air going in and pop, too much fuel for that split second.

i got this after changing header, cat and catback all at once on my R. it only happens when i accelerate at constant throttle, release throttle, apply small amount of throttle then it pops

thought popping was normal, always happens on my MR2

you might come out to your car in da morning one day and find the muffler full of this

Its nothing to worry about...

When you start playing with Intake, you're altering the amount of air an engine can potentially ingest v stock air intake [Sometimes you alter it negatively with a poorly thought out intake and the ECU will adjust accordingly ie loss of power/torque @ across the rev range].

Exhaust wise, you've changed the amount of potential exhaust gas that can be released and generally if you get Headers, Hi-Flow CAT and Catback, you will make the backfire more apparent. They most likely always existed, but the stock exhaust setup is designed to muffle both the sound and the flames so you get a puff of black smoke instead [Not to be confused with running rich in general]

The stock ECU will react to these changes, within its limitations/parameters. How it reacts depends on the programming and triggers. Hence why there are suggestions in changing to new 02 sensors etc. These are how the ECU 'sense' your engine so the better they are, generally the better condition they're in, the better your car will perform.

If you tune the ECU, you will find some performance increase and spend less fuel potentially ;)

check ur dizzy cap probably have a weak spark headers increase the scavenging affect extracting the burnt gasses on the exhaust stroke ever wondered why they're extractors
during this method valve overlap comes into play where the intake valve starts to open while the exhaust valve hasnt shut wich increases VE (volumetric efficiency) alowing fresh air fuel mixture to be drawn into the cylinder by the negative pulse from the extractor to aid im expelling all burnt gasses- NOW - if your spark is weak you wont get a complete burn wich then increases the ammount of unburnt fuel that enters ur exhaust causing the gasses to ingnite at the collector before theyve had a chance to burn off in the cat

correct.

I think exhaust popping is cool :)
But I think it's caused by excess unburnt fuel which is dumped into your exhaust system and ignited in there?

Its why it does it ;)
