View Full Version : Towing with a Jazz

G'day

I have a Jazz 2010 GLI auto, I'm in a position where I need to tow a trailer and equipment every so often with a 950kg gross weight probably once a week or so.

I was planning on selling the Jazz and getting something like a Falcon or Aurion, but looking at the Jazz tow capacity I notice it has a 1 tonne tow rating.

My questions are is the Jazz suitable for round town towing with this kind of weight? I wouldn't bother with any highway work and I would be taking it easy around town. One upside is that my Dad has a fleet of Falcon sedans and utes which regularly tow 2 tonnes like it is not even there, so I suppose I could beg, borrow, steal a car once in a blue moon if I need to do highway towing - but mostly the Jazz would be used.

Also how much does a towbar cost? I know ultimately something like a Jazz isn't the ultimate tow car but I'm not exactly flushed with cash so if the Jazz could handle the work for 6 months or so that would be great... Plus I love the little bugger and do want to hang onto it.

Appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Tow bar should be cheap.

Personally I'd feel better towing 500kg than a ton in the Jazz.

Is your's the 1.3 or the 1.5?

Just make sure you get a trailer with brake assist. Stopping the extra ton on he Jazz's brakes alone would be quite impossible in an emergency.

Falcon would be much better and safer.

you need to refer to your owners manual, as a jazz would likely have a 350 or 400kg unbraked towing capacity, that is the TOTAL weight of the load and trailer. A tonne would likely be overweight, illegal and thus void your insurance :-(

Towing - Braked 800 kg
Towing - Unbraked 450 kg

no, the jazz only ways 940kg, and the 1.3L is too gutless to tow something of greater weight than itself.

jazz is circa 1050, if it weigh 940 it would fly!

also owning a 1.5L manual, it struggled with aircon on, hate to imagine it going up a hill towing 1 ton.

I recommend a transmission cooler if you do go ahead with it.

Just don't do it lol. Swap for a mate's car or something with a decent 4, 6 or 8cyl.

Jazz just isn't made for towing. Even the 1.5 is gutless with air con off IMO.

I tow light loads with my 1.5 VTiS CVT. Works fine with say a 6x4 box trailer with 150Kg rubbish in it for example. At a pinch I towed my jetski but it was boarderline and not really recommended. It weighed close to the 450kg limit and the biggest problem was braking - you felt the push . Slow acceleration was fine for CVT but braking is the weakness. I towed the ski about 6 times - a bit too scary.

Hope this helps.

I'm a bit late to the piece, but no way in hell would I tow anything even 75% of the rated towing capacity of the Jazz. My other car used to be a 2.0L Liberty and I towed a 750kg trailer around a lot. It could get it going eventually but would overheat on very hot days in stop start traffic. Get something at least 2.5L.

Towing - Braked 800 kg
Towing - Unbraked 450 kg

Just wondering is it include the trailers weight as well? What is the normal 6 x4 trailer weight?
