View Full Version : Hanging revs on manual

I've got a 2012 manual Euro and absolutely love it, but the one thing I have noticed is revs tend to hang a bit when you're higher up in the revs and changing gears.

For example, I'll rev it out in a gear, say 2nd or 3rd (to about 5000/5500 rpm), and at the point where you take your foot off the accelerator and apply clutch to change gears, the revs will hang momentarily.

Is this unique to my car or have other manual drivers got the same problem?

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think it's due to a heavy flywheel. so you have a more forgiving and smoother shift.

Yah I do believe it is from the heavy standard flywheel. It is support to make high rev shifts 'smoother'. But them again I'm no expert. But it seems logical enough

Yeah rushing the shifts in a Euro is a one-way street to worn clutch and synchros. It's not a racing gearbox.

Good excuse for a lightweight fly and heavier duty clutch when you do wear it out. ;)

new cars feature a drive by wire function which essentially control sthe throttle electronically based on your input at the pedal. The crap thing is that they tend to rev hang in order to burn the fuel rather than dump it in the exhaust and let it ignite in the cat

This. The rev hang is a bit annoying however you get used to it. I know for the FN2 this feature can be turned off using Flashpro. Not sure about the Accord Euro.

Revs also hang for emissions requirements so that the fuel already in the cylinder is burnt and not released into the cat converter, which causes fouling.

With a lightweight flywheel, you can still see the revs hang for a bit, but the RPM then drops really quickly after that.

there's the 'shadow e-throttle' thing that the FD civic guys like to use, maybe there's one for the accords too.

Thanks for the input guys.

It's not a major issue - not like I'm racing it or flogging it all the time, just something I noticed.

Small trade off for the rest of the car being an awesome bit of kit.

Every modern manual i've driven in the last few years does this to some degree or another . As said its a combination of drive-by-wire and emissions .
