Hi All,

I recently bought a 1995 Honda Civic Vti EG with a few modifications (15" Alloys and Vtec Controller) and couldn't get the insurance, from NRMA, approved because they wanted to know the depth or width, I forgot which one, of the wheels (Not sure because I haven't picked up the car yet), and they needed to speak to an underwriter to see if they would issue insurance to a Civic with a Vti Controller. I'm 23 by the way.

So I want to know

(i) If NRMA will reject because of a VTEC controller; and

(ii) What are the dimensions of the stock wheels that come with a VTi EG civic.

Thanking you all in advance for replies.

NRMA does not insure the car if any extras are added to the car for performance wise.
Thats what NRMA told me....
Should try Just Car

I think with the 15inchs wheels it should be fine. With the EK4 VTI-R standard wheel size is 15inch. Quote me if Im wrong.....

Just shop around..

standard dimensions of stock wheel is 14 x 6.

ring AAMI, i am insured with them - same car. They are quite good and will insure three mods of your choosing.

I'm pretty sure the EG civic came out with 13" wheels so 15s shouldnt be a problem as for the VTEC controller i personally wouldnt mention it. Most insurance will alow rims (not sure if its 2"-3" bigger than factory wheels), 2" exaust and your car to be lowered up to 1.5"-2"( once again not sure). If they dont want to touch you try Shannons.

you are 23? and you're still finding problems?.. man thats unlucky.. i reckon insurance is such a ****ing ripoff!!.. i've been quoted for my car, under me as a driver (18 yrs old) for my EM1 with an exhaust and coilovers over $2500... how ridiculous..!?!? i know i'm only 18 but F:eek:CK!!... its daylight robbery!!

Well if you think that’s a rip off. NRMA quoted me $3500 for insurance on my EK4 stock standard....

About 3 years a go I was planning to get a Honda Prelude VTI-R 97 model and AMMI quoted me 9k for bloody comprehensive insurance... Insurance in NSW is much more expensive then any other state.

NRMA wont insure you if you car is 30 mm lower than how they come out standard. Ive got a 97 civic, 17 inch rims, exhaust, dropped on its ass, system... plus im 18 and my insurance is $1200 with GIO.

I'm paying ~$2500 with NRMA, will most likely change companies after my policy ends. Reason why I've joined NRMA is because they've given me (i think it's 60%, will have to check) NCB on the spot.

How old are you? Being 23, you should be like a Rating 2, why not try Just cars?

Does an audio system count as a mod ?
Or is it insured under a separate section ?

it counts as a mod if you want it replaced if your car gets stolen.

Tho man car is financed so the price will drop to $1000 oh but I'm 32

NRMA

Headers

As for wheels you can go as high as you want as long as there only 6.5" wide

it's best to firstly with all mods get a permit for it. Dependant on what you get done to you car, get an engineers certification as well.
Got one for mine and i just pretty much laugh at cops when they pull me over.
Once you get permits, go to an insurance company that deals with modified cars. Not sure if SHANNONS is a australia wide company but it's one of the car enthusiasts insurance dealers in WA.
But....best to ignore the controller and not tell them about it. If anything should happen, rip it off at the last minute.

Call JustCar and get a quote, do it a few times until you get what you like ;) I managed to get through to a team that gives you a rating on your driving experience rather then your amount of years insured.
Info: $630ish with rating one protection, agreed value of 11K, bodykits, tinted windows. I have yet to notify them about the stereo and wheels though, but I don't think it will be more then $100? Oh, I'm 21.
Audio systems through JustCar are an accessory I think from memory when I asked them.

Okay, I just insured my new 1995 EG Civic VTi hatch with AAMI. (I'm 21yo)

This is the deal. Car standard apart from tinted windows and alarm/immobiliser.
Premium $753, Agreed Value $11600, Excess $2000 + $400 age excess.
I'm allowed one mod (because of my age), but they're very strict on what mod. I don't think they'll like your VTEC controller, anything engine is a no-no. The wheels should be fine. I'm going to upgrade my brakes as my one mod... discs and pads.

But ring them a couple of times to check. If they say no good, go to Just Car insurance. They don't care about age or mods. You'll get pretty cheap (comparatively) insurance from them.
I think they quoted me a premium of $1400.

Just FYI, I think a good thing about Just Cars (maybe AAMI too) is that they offer flexi premium, or something like that, where you lower your premium but up your excess.
