up nearly up to the top of the heat gauge i get out of the car after i let it cool down.
I take the raditor cap off steam comes out then i put the cap back on and then the car drives for hours without overheating again, any ideas

Thermostat most likly. Could also be a blocked radiator! Check if bottom hose is getting hot! if not theres no flow. So themosat or block rad

Also check to see if the fans come on. they should come on at 96 degrees! Easy to check with a Infrared Thermometer.

take the thermostat out and see.
replace it if need to be.

check the hose while you are at it.

To test a thermostat. Just chuck it in boiling water. it will take around 15 to 45 seconds to fully open! When every replacing one. Use OEM. Ones opening at a cooler temp is not good. And cheap supercheap ones are crap and have a short life!

why would one that oepns earlier be not as good?
The J'sracing ones open closer to 65-68*c
but OEM is 78*c.

surely theres a reason, prevent overheating?

But for OP.

had the car not been driven much before this? or was it regularly used and then when the PS was re-installed this problem has come about, because if it was left laying around and then the PS was put in then it might make sense for it to be a blockage.

The car is meant to operate at a certain temperature and until its reachs the car runs rich. If there no need for it. There wouldn't be a thermostat at all. Lower the temp it opens does not stop the car overheating or make it run cooler on track. It just bys it like 2 minutes time!!!!!!!!!!!

First action when temp issues, always swap out for a new thermostat and monitor coolant level
