View Full Version : WTF! Something weird is going on with my car. Exhaust?

Honda

So I went for a drive today and noticed my car sounds like it has an exhaust?!

It sounds pretty cool though, but I got no idea why this happened.

The car is 100% stock and doesn't have any modification. Is there such thing as an exhaust leak? Maybe due to a loose screw somewhere or something?

Other info:
- There is no fluids coming out of the exhaust or anything
- I installed a new amp (running approx 600RMS in total)
- I washed the car?

Exhaust leak. Or more then likely if you haven't touched it lately you have bottomed out and punched a hole in the headers, b pipe resonator or the rear muffler!

Get under the car and try and find were the nose is coming from!

is Bottom out referring hitting something? I'm almost certain that this didn't happen as I always go on humps really slow + its not lowered at all

It is definitely coming from the exhaust at the back. I'll have a look further.

I had a further look and it sounds like an exhaust has been installed. I can't pin point the position of the sound but its definitely at the rear.

It really sounds like a normal car with an exhaust system

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!

Is it easy to replace the rear muffler? It seems like there is only two bolts. Plug and play?

How much am I looking at? What are good brands?

Just get a stock replacement. go to wreckers. anywhere from 40-80 depending on the joint. or even less

Looks like it just rusted through at the weld. Any exhaust place can clean it up and reweld it (or cut of a small section and weld on a new one). I would say the MOST they would charge you would be $120 (but as you mentioned, you like the sound? If that is the case you can remove the muffler completely and just get the original pipe extended). If you would like to increase air flow a bit then a whole custom press bent cat back can be made and installed for around $250.

is this legal? How much would this cost? Do you know any place that can do it? I'm in NSW

Would this mean approx 120 for the muffler and an additional 250 for the custom press?

It got me thinking, should I just get an exhaust system?

Just buy the axle back 2nd hand. Be looking at like 50 bucks. 2 bolts and its down. Easy!!!

Also before u ask what a axle back is. The exhaust has the Header's, Cat. and cat back.

The cat back includes the B pipe and the axle back!

The axle back is ruffly from the rear tires back. So like 1/2 a meter of pipe and the muffler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this it? The pipe that heads to the muffler.

I dont think I need to buy an axle back because it is still in good condition and the broken part is right on the edge where the axle back and muffler meets

LOL i spent 500 on my header's, 250 on my cat and 1100 on my cat back.. And thats cheap compared to what some poeple buy!.. You get what you pay for.

You want cheap. BUY OEM 2nd hand from reckers.

You want cheapish sound. about 150 for crap cannon welded on

I think its best to go to a wrecker.... :( but i like the sound..

Is it possible to get rid off the muffler completely and leave the tip as it is? or does it have to be extended so it can be seen.

I have my pinkslip next week and I dont think it'll pass cause of that..

Do guys know if a 5th gen prelude axle back will fit an ek?

No it wont. Also it had to protrud past the bump. U will get exhaust fumes inside the car like that. And yes u will fail pink slip if thr mechanic does his job right

Wow you have been on this forum since 2005! you managed to score the name Honda yet you say things like "it sound like my car has an exhaust" which reminds me of what a woman, who knew nothing about cars would say, my ex use to say " i dont want a car with an exhaust because they are loud. derp" she was a sped in that field.

nah no such thing as an exhaust leak before. maybe someone took your car to the muffler shop and had it done up.

Last time I got a quote made up, it was $250 including a 'sports' muffler (or BYO muffler if you'd like).

Also, from the picture you posted, it looks like the muffler has actually detached completely from the piping. Is this right? If so, just remove the muffler and go for a quick drive. If you like the sound then any exhaust shop will be able to extend it and send you on your way for under $100...

If you decide it's too loud, go to a wrecker and buy a stock axle-back or post up a 'WTB' thread. I'm sure there are heaps of people on here who have shelled out for a new exhaust system and have a stock muffler lying around.

Now I believe everyone has given you pretty much every option you have for your small budget.
