hey people!

im new here. and subsequently very ignorant, so please forgive me.

id like to know the differences between the 6th gen EKs... like gli, cxi and vtir. and also the difference between 96-98 models and 99-00 models.

im assuming the vtir has the vtec and the others dont??!!

also, can anyone give me info on sunroofs? i know the vtir have sunroofs, but what about getting after market sunroofs in the glis or cxis? good / bad idea? how much? or just find a vtir is the best option?

thanks.

Performance wise there is a big difference between the vti-r and the other models.

From 95 onwards only the vti-r has the DOHC VTEC engine (118kW) The other models all share the same 1.6L SOHC non-vtech 88kW engine. Gli and vti just has better features than the CX-i.

After market sunroof can cost you upto 2K to have installed and doesn't come standard on gli or cxi (standard on vti 1991-1993.....not sure about 1993-1999 though)

The vti-r comes with all options such as ABS, airbags, sun roof, aircon, PS, Pmirrors etc.

Hope that helps.

PS: 1991-1993/4 vti models comes with the SOHC VTEC engine which makes around 96kW and comes standard with sunroof and other power options + drivers airbag.

What is your price range and what year model are you looking for? We can give more specific answers once you tell us that..

That would be EG, the EK started in '96. And yes, as Wynode mentioned above, the '95 Vti came with a SOHC VTEC.

Yes, AFAIK EG-EK Vti Civic's are SOHC VTEC...

I think there are some models that are 1.6L Non-VTEC DOHC (Si?) and then you have the VTi-R which is 1.6L DOHC VTEC.

No, the 95(oct)-00 VTi's Sedans came with the d16y5 (SOHC non-vtec 88kw)
93-95(oct) VTi's Sedans came with the d16y1 (SOHC vtec 96kw)
the 97(oct)-00 VTi Coupes came with d16y8 (SOHC vtec 95kw)

I never new there were VTi coupes!

Apart from that, everything else was quite standard. Everything power inc sunroof, 4w discs airbags, central.
The EK's got a few more standards though (due to technology) like ABS, dual airbags, remote boot/fuel lid realese!

yes...

there were vti (single cam vtec) coupes and EK hatches...
the EK VTi hatch came was available only in 1995.
late 1995 they released the VTi-R hatch!

the vtir (EK4) civic hatchs come with all power options including sunroof and the B16A2 DOHC VTEC 1.6L engine..

96-98 EK Civic Hatch - CXi, Gli, VTi-R (VTi hatch?)
Sedan - Gli, VTi
Coupe - Gli, VTi

99-2000 Hatch - CXi, Gli
Sedan - Gli, VTi
Coupe - Gli, VTi, VTi-R

All coupes are made in the USA with minor difference btw the jap model.

99-2000 models received a face lift with sharper headlights, rear lights and a rounder front/rear bar.

Differences btw the VTi's are:

Jap produced gets the D16Y7@88kw
USA produced gets the D16Y8@96kw

Cxi 1.6 non-vtec sohc produces @88kw but has less torque

VTi-R 1.6 Dohc Vtec @118kw

Did any of the 96-98 EK Cxi's come with a 1.5L or are they all 1.6L?

They are all 1.6L.

The only 1.5L civics are the some of the early 90's ones which I believe were carby.

Actually i think australasia was the only region not to get a b16a under the hood of the VTi models. The SiR's pulled a bit more power afaik.

The Coupe is american built, but I would have thought it'd have a sunroof.

There's an option with the coupe to have one or not.

VTi-R civic's are generally hard to find, I had to wait for 5 months before finding one in good condition.

The VTi-R coupes are even harder to find.

The B16A in the JDM EF9 SiR ('89-90) was 160ps. In the JDM EG6 SiR it rose to 170ps. In the JDM EK4 SiR (not the Type R) it dropped back to 160ps.

No it didn't. The JDM EK4 SiR (hatch and sedan) is rated at 170ps. Only the overseas models get a detuned model cos of emission regulations and difference in fuel etc.

My VTi-R coupe doesn't have a sun-roof either and I bought it brand new, so the sun-roof definitely isn't standard.

My bad - 2 sites with conflicting info - I checked the Honda History site - you are spot on.

Your coupe was made in the USA, which means cheap. All Jap VTi-R hatches comes with sun roof.

Also the states didn't get a B16A in an EK until they started producing the EK Si Coupe.

Japan and Europe is where Honda's biggest buyers are and that's where they get the Type-R Civic's, Accord Type-R... Damn them

Ummm... isn't the US Si Coupe an EM?

Trying to remember off my old Club Si days

Still technically an EK. Like the USA calling the 96-00 Civic coupe the "EJ".

When made in the USA, call it something else :P
