Recently purchased a 1996 Civic for my little brother and I had it jacked up the other day and noticed I can wiggle the front wheels a little on both passenger and driver's side. The car drives ok, but obviously makes noises when going over road imperfections... I thought the noises were blown shocks but now I'm thinking it's the tie rods.

Also, car use to hum real bad, and I thought it was just the tyres... replaced all four tyres and reduced the noise, but still some hum left... wheel bearing? What do you guys think?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Take off the wheel and check to see if the castle nut for the tie rod is on tight. Have to remove the split pin first. When you put it back on tighten it with a rattle gun or something like that. Make it tight. Maybe the joint wasnt put in properly before and it was popped out.

As for humming could be your tyres again if you bought shit ones. They do that. But to be safe maybe replace your wheel bearings as it is an old car. Wear and tear man. Also maybe your discs need machining?

Hope it helps man.

Thanks for the info jajaja! Appreciate it.

I have taken the car for a good drive tonight and the 'hum' is only there from 25kmp/h and up when the steering wheel is centered or turning to the right. If I turn to the left, the hum sound goes away and it's quiet which leads me to believe it's not the tyres. I'm starting the think it's the steering rack? Anyone ever had this issue before?

i had that hum in my civic, gets louder when i turn right.
much less noise driving straight.

was the wheel bearing.

Thanks mocchi. Looks like I will change the tie rods and wheel bearings too now. Once done, I think the Civic will be pretty darn reliable.

hmmm... when i wiggle the front wheels my entire tie rod moves, even the inner one. I'm hoping it's not the steering rack?

Hey, anyone know where's the best place to get new front wheel bearings? Ebay? And how much would it cost to get it fitted?
