View Full Version : Tyre noise problems

hey all,

just switched my rears tyres to the front and vice versa.
all was good before but i noticed theres a "rubbing and rattling" sound if i exactly go over 80km or slow down after the switch

all tyres/wheels are the same size.

would anyone know what this could be?

Did you tighten the nuts properly, were there hub rings?

Could also be that the tire is now wearing in a different place to were it was in the other position. this should go in time.
Due to differ camber from front to back!

remember to tighten nuts in a star order


also tyre noise due to directional tyres???

wheel alignment/balance shouldnt make rubbing/rattling noise.. check wheel nuts. but even loose wheel nuts dont typically rattle.. did you do anything else to the car at the same time?

Even directional tyres on the wrong way round shouldnt 'rattle'...

to say rattle may be an over-statement hahaha

its more of a inner camber wear feeling which vibrates the footrest dramatically >80km

whilst changing the tyres i did flush my oil, spark plugs and filter. doubt its related to that because the car runs fine or am i wrong

righto in that case get your wheels balanced. and yea none of that other stuff would be to blame. i was more so thinking along the lines of changed a tie rod end/ball joint, things that could have put your wheel alignment out.

(and if your tyres are directional make sure their on the right sides.)

did you just change the front left wheel to rear right and vice verse without taking the tyres off???

if the tyres are directional, the tyres are not rotate in the right direction.

Go get your wheels balanced and aligned, guaranteed to solve your problem.

But basically.

If you drive a front wheel drive, when you rotate your tyres you use the middle diagram, front left goes to back left, back left goes to front right, front right goes to back right, back right goes to front left each time you rotate your tyres, that's how you're meant to do it.

shouldn't be a directional tyre issue then.. get em balanced..

make sure you wheel nuts are tight.

not overtight, but torqued up correctly.

ohhh. i get the picture now. i think i know where i went wrong now. will update. rather try my best first before splashing cash.

Followed the diagram and all went well! No more noise/camber wear feeling. Thanks guys

Glad the problem is solved ... it might still be worth going off and getting a balance and alignment though, just to ensure you actually have done everything right.

$15 ~ $20 is a small price to pay for pure peace of mind.
