Hi guys,

A recent report on the news mentioned how much more dearer premium economy is, and the resulting cost of pumping premium when it isn't required.
Got me thinking: Do Accord Euros need premium economy?
The sales person when I bought the car said "absolutely", but the fuel cap area notes that it can take E10! Not going to go into those extremes myself, but one can save around $10 each pump by just going to 91.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

The label on the fuel cap is the Minimum Requirement for your car to run.

Its like you just taking water instead of other drinks to survive.

Your engine's computer will give more ignition/ spark advance on higher octane fuel, resulting in better response & more kms per liter.

Try running different grades of Petrol to compare the way the engine responds & what kms per liter you get.

Based on the results you get, stick to the Octane Grade that gives you the best kms per liter.

Don't forget to check your Tire Pressures as well.

Check your owners manual. It should say 95 RON minimum. If you find 95 RON E10, you can use it.

Using 91 is below the minimum requirement and you could get high fuel consumption (ECU runs rich if it detects preignition) or engine damage.

Lolz, E10 is crap, but it's actually better for the CL9 than regular unleaded fuel. The reason being is that E10 is 94-95 octane vs 91 of regular unleaded fuel. And since the K24 is built to handle E10, there's nothing wrong with filling up with it. Basically 98 > 95 > E10 > reg unleaded (which can be as low as 87 octane as there's no set standard). Basically put, I've heard of plenty of CL9 owners running 91 in their car and it still runs fine. They just lose a bit of power, and a get a lot worse fuel economy because the engine is running a richer air/fuel mix to compensate. You can also tell who the cheap skates are by looking at their exhaust.

i dont understand how you justify running a lower grade fuel that generally gets less kms/litre for a saving of a few bux per week

but thats just me

the best tank of fuel i ever got was from the accord running bp 98 and a full bottle of liqui moli fuel system cleaner - got almost 730kms on the trip meter from filling up to the fuel light coming on

As everyone has said, the E10 compatible sticker is intended for emergency use. Your car was designed for 95 Octane fuel so you should stick with that. If you are really keen, record your fuel consumption over 3 tanks, average it out, then run a tank (or 3) of E10 and see what the difference in fuel consumption is. Also check your exhaust to see how dirty it may be getting.

Make your own decision on the matter, however I would say that most would agree Honda would know what's best for it's engines (manufacturers would rather plug lower grade fuels where possible as this would contribute to the overall running cost from a buyers perspective).

You're probably running more than 98 octane in that case, fuel injector cleaners are other additives raise octane rating a bit.

yeah with just normal bp 98 i get about 650-690 at absolute max - country driving
in the city ill be lucky to get 625-650 - i had to use caltex 95 in the euro once and it worked out that i would have only gotten about 550kms from a full tank of it

I've used 95 and 98, and got the same mileage from both...

Thanks all for the replies. Will stick to using the 95 then; every now and then (when it's cheap) I've pumped 98 to just flush/clean the insides slightly.

Yeah I'm highly suspect of that channel 7 fuel economy report the other night. The 95 RON car ran out way too early, and the E10 car went further than I expected (Shouldn't ethanol blended fules like E10 have a lower energy density than regular petrol?).

Question: Is E10 blended with 91RON unleaded with 10% ethanol, which would boost the octane a bit? Or is it 91RON after the E10 is blended?

I agree. Its a better fuel, burns better, higher octane and one you use it for a tank or so you should see better economy. I have always run this in all cars and including a jetski.

Yeah seemed like a load of crap to me - The way you drive makes a huge difference, so even having a different person driving the cars is a variable.
