Hey iv just purchased a new 98 integra vtir , and something is rattling in the engine bay area, the last owner told me it was the pod filter enclosed in the stock box, because it wasnt screwed in properly, but i replaced it with a stock filter bolted it down properly.

I got it for a bit cheaper then most vtir's in the area so im expecting some sort of problem, it rattles up in in low revs from 1-4k then it goes away, ill slow down in the other gear to 1-2k and can still hear it a little, when im at a stop and rev the engine no rattles at all, engine preforms pretty well, not burning oil, doesn't seem to be over fueling.

Iv searched and haven't found anyone with this sort of problem, but from what iv seen people have had a grinding/rattle sound which results in a bad input shaft bearing in the transmission.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Could be exhaust rattle? Maybe one of the mounts cracked and causing a rattle sound. But need more info to be sure. What kind of rattle is it? Does it sound like metal on metal? I had a rattle on my car. Turns out one of my headers mounts broke.

Could be pinging/knocking

could you record a vid of the sound?

so it only rattles under load.
if its in neutral (not clutched in) will it rattle?
does it rattle in gear clutched in?

Cat has loose shit inside I reckon

This happened to me, then eventually the honeycomb inside broke into bigger pieces making my car unable to move at all

Had to drive it home from work, smashing my cat to loosen up the parts so I could drive properly

Replaced cat, no more rattling

Get someone to rev the car while you listen underneath, or rev the car with your hand while listening underneath the car

Or, if the cat is not the problem, pull the leaver infront of the throttle body to rev the car, and listen for the rattle in the engine bay

I got it checked out today, its definatly something in the gearbox rattling, gears work fine, no cruntching, without pulling it out we wont know, but they think its going to be the bearing inside the box. sounds expensive.

Somewhat expensive but not the end of the world. Sounds like an input shaft bearing if it's a GBox issue. This is a fast little rattling that tends to subside when you pick up speed and also goes away when you push your clutch in.

Where do you live? Might be I can find a good mechanic to do it for you. Have had a friend of mine do his for a good price.

hey all iv heard lot of opinions, but im not %100 its input shaft bearing, because it doesnt match the description exactly, my car doesnt rattle on start up, its actually starts to rattle when in any gear even neutral, and i just let the clutch out then it will constantly rattle, until the clutch petal is pushed in, and then while im driving in low revs that exact same rattle will happen when the clutch petal isnt pushed. Is it possible that its the Input shaft and Throw out bearing(Clutch is worn, doesnt have long let til it starts slipping)?

same thing happened to me, was loose engine mounts.

Have you ruled out engine mounts yet ?

Yeah iv check the mounts all fine there

That sounds exactly like input shaft bearing. Like i said earlier.

I'd say you could have solids racing mounts? Or just shity mounts.

Your exhaust could maybe (not be loose) but just rattling.

Let me know how it goes

Input shaft bearing. If not that then your clutch has broken into pieces, like the springs and the spring is freely moving around. After awhile if you cannot engage clutch anymore, this will be the problem.

If it were the engine mounts, the noise would not go away of you depressed the clutch pedal.
with the car in neutral, clutch pedal up (clutch engaged), engine running, does the noise fade as you slowly depress the clutch pedal, or is it "on/off"? - If it fades, it's the throw out bearing. If "on/off", it's more than likely one of the transmission bearings.

It does fade when i push the clutch in but when the clutch is out, and im driving moving up in the low revs it has the rattle there aswell. I think it might be both.

well u said ur clutch is on the way out so get that done, if replacing the throw out bearing then dosnt fix it then...well.... get an itr box

Dude it's your ISB. How many people gotta say it? Do your clutch and get the bearing done at the same time.

I know it was the ISB but what im saying is i think its the pilot aswell thats all, thanks all for the help.
