Hey guys, Called to have my car booked in for the 100k and they have advised me that the spark plugs will cost me $180... This sounds extremely expensive to me!

What spark plugs should I be using, I will price my own and go back to them and so no go!

Yea I have just done that and was able to get them for $46... How on earth can they justify the cost beats me!

It depends on the dealer. With Toyota, they quoted $25 each for my V6 Camry, but when I purchased it, they charged me $70 for the half dozen. They said they only charged that much if people purchased individually.... although I guess if the guy at the counter was dodge, he could have charged me $150 for it (wouldn't have bought it though).

On a side note; are there any better sparks available? Are these iridium coated or iridium core? And any leads to go with these to increase performance? Hotter spark = better efficiency after all.

Find the right spark plug spec and jump on ebay.

not really unless you wanna go for something like plasma ignition.

It's just something I'm thinking of. I mean when you change the sparks, they last 100 000km, and aren't particularly expensive. Even a 1% efficiency increase would be worth it. Also noticing APEXi make Racing sparks... wonder what that means. Perhaps should look at coil packs and leads as well. Anyone know what good company makes sparks, coil packs and leads for the CL9? Can only seem to find sparks.

Lookup pulstar plugs maybe?

Some people say its snake oil tho.

Else a set of copper tipped plugs usually conduct the spark better, but the last 1/2 as long.

Mna just go NGK. Dont waste your money. Th amin things are they are the right ones, heat grade, spark gap etc.

even supercheap auto would only charge you ~$85 for 4 number of IX plugs.

DIY it

Why not use copper plugs and replace them more frequently?

Cost of changing plugs every 20k could end up being higher than iridiums lasting 100k.

Hmm you have a valid point aaronng, didn't think of that.

according to my calculations (based on prices i have in my pile of receipts) i paid $26 for copper spark plugs vs $108 the previous owner paid for the iridium plugs.

There is also a higher risk of the spark plugs being fouled for some unforseen circumstances too..

Cheers for all the replies. I am thinking of getting everything and doing it all my self. I just refuse to justify the cost.. My gf's dad has always serviced his own cars as long as he uses the manufacturer parts. So I might look at going down this track. I just cant justify the costs that people want to charge me

However would you prefer to have fresh plugs every 20k as opposed to fresh plugs every 100k?

Personally I prefer fresh plugs because I go tracking, I assume because this is in the euro forum, it would probably not apply.

You can just take the plugs out every 10 - 20k and regap them accordingly.

With iridium plugs, the electrode does not wear out. Even after going to the track 5 times, the plugs are still good, gapped and not fouled. This is for a stock car of course, if the car was turbo'd and tuned to run richer, then fouling could be a problem and you would then prefer the plugs to be replaced more often.

Another thing which I thought of was the Euro's direct ignition. I'm not sure if direct ignition works at the same efficiency when using a copper plug compared to iridium. It seems that direct ignition gets spec'd with iridium and previous dizzy set up is spec'd with copper plugs.

All K series motors come with coil over plug set up and do not use any form of leads. If you want to upgrade the coilpacks, look to MSD

Thanks, can't seem to find any MSD coil packs that fit accura/honda though. Seems like only GM/Ford.

Yea but your sparkler plugs would be shooting Frickin Lasers!

Otherwise, anyone looked into "ignition boosters"?
Looks like the boost the voltage of the ignition pack and produce a stronger spark, outcome similar to msd's?

I've been looking around, but I can't seem to find anything of the like. Have you found any brand that does it so I could do some research?

Vsd ignite?

Btw you'll probably also need a voltage stablizer if you are going to overvolt anything

Plasma ignition creates a hell of a spark/fireball.

I'll see what pricing is like when it becomes available. Might give it a shot.

785 dollars.

Or you could get a ignition booster for under $200

FML, I knew plasma coils were expensive, was hoping this controller unit, using the OEM coils, would be cheaper.

Hi Gents,

Just purchased 4 NGK LASER IRIDIUM spark plugs off eBay and now to fit them. Is it as easy as ripping the old ones out and chucking the new ones in or is there more too it? e.g. do I need to grease the new plugs or anything?

Cheers
