View Full Version : D16Y4, Will a B16B head and gearbox fit?

I have a D16Y4 engine, 195Kkms and the gearbox is kinda seeing its end (chipped tooth on first and second gears) and my engine isnt at its best. I was wondering if its possible to fit a B16B vtec head (with B16B ecu and i add on the soilitoid) and a b16b gearbox (with b16b shifter) because it has better gear ratios than a ek1 gerbox.

If they do fit, what else do i need?

haha omg how do you do that? :D and nahh my mate suggested it to me (he used to own an ej8) and i thought it could fit but dont know.
I just dont have the money to buy the whole b16b or b18c2r package

if your stuck with d 16 y 4 , and cant turbo

Get y8/y1 vtec head
after market cams
high comp pistons
full exhaust
and most importantly tune!!!!!!

also weight reduction can help not that big of a deal.

i am just like u , i have d16y4 i keep saying i need more speed blah blah
but now i just wanna work on the actual car itself Cosmetics, Suspension and once im 100% happy with it drop a b18c/2 /7 or if its possible R
are you actually 'track racing ' or 'drags'
if its just mucking around with your mates or racing cars on the street its not really worth it!

well i dont want to go over 2litres or i will be in with the v8s and twin turboed crazy skylines and stuff :/ i did saved up all of my money... then i had to move so i could have an job so thats my money gone

hang in there mate , enjoy the dseries :) they take a beating like no other engine :)
slowly mod it .
first get full exhaust / headers
stage 2 cams should be good
high comp pistons
and by the time the engine goes u should have some money for a swap

Adam you've been on this forum way too long to not know that a B16A head will not fit on any d series engine. Stop asking questions and ****ing go out and find some real information about 1993 to 2000 Hondas. The answers are out there you don't need to ask us.

why are your b series options only b16b or b18c7? when it comes to modifying,the things that make thses engines specisal when stockngoes out the window. to stay in the 2L and under class just get a b18c2 and build the head, add a ITR box (maby upgrade the LSD) and work the suspension, if you cant be competitive with that combo there is something wrong...

Do those comps go but the egine litres or cc?

If it is cc, you can just do a b20 VTEC swap it as that is 1973cc keeping you under 2L.

B18c2 is VTiR engine
B18cR is JDM ITR engine
B18c7 is AUDM ITR engine.

OP - a b18c2 conversion in an EG with I/H/E + tune will leave v6, supercharged v6 and possibly v8s in the dust (speaking from experience :) )

And since you are coming from such a lower powered engine, any conversion you do that yeilds a 25% power increase will need to be engineered AND sent through regency to have it registered to the chassis since you want it to be a daily drive - so factor in an extea $1500 for that.

The head will not fit.

The box will not fit (short answer) but if you want to spend a lot of cash getting a D2B conversion setup from the states it's possible, just seriously not worth it.

B16B parts are all overpriced. You would find a B18C2 much cheaper and much easier.


Do a B16A or B18C2 swap if anything at all. Or get a 4.7 or 4.9 FD for your D series box.


And lol yeah, how do you know you have chipped teeth? Synchros probably shagged.

If OP wants a shorter gear ratio gb go the Y1 GB or if he wants the best all around ratio the more expensive an rarer Y8 GB would b the best bet, y4 ratio are better suited to turbo D16 as they are longer :D

Just get a crossmission gear set, final drive and lsd for your d and go and smash the v8's with only 60kw :)

I probably didn't word that correctly, but I meant as in an EK4/ DC2 VTiR etc. I guessed he lacked a little mechanical knowledge.

Sorrys guys, I do get a blonde moment at times, and a miss-communtcation with my friend, i was talking about the b16b i love to have at least in my civic and he comes in and talking about swapping heads to a vtec (to me i thought he meant the b16b, not the d16y8) and i thought its almost the same block (i thought) but I wasnt sure. Yes I spell shit. And the people who are beating me have a bigger engine/ or turbo'd engines if they are good drivers, not a dirty VN commoy driver going mang mang then spinsout making a burnout and saying that was on purpose. And I love to buy an block and built it up or buy an engine package but seriously i dont have much money to play around with. the biggest thing I never bought for my car is $350 (clutch) and the second biggest would be a $100 stereo. Mags came with the civic and the driving lights i found in my dads shed with heaps of relays and wiring.

well this being the case im fairly confident that best value for money for you would be sell what u have and buy an ek4 or dc2. or if you wanna swap on a budget go with a b16a. also if you have commodore 3.8L v6 beating you around the track there is one thing you must do...ask why they are racing in under 2L.

cool story but as i had asked 2 pages ago why do u think a b16b b18c7 or b18cr are your only options, why not just get a b18c2 or a b16a? why spend so much on the wank factor?

i know, my story needs more dragons in them! Anyway I am only saying them cause i know what they are good engines from rumors, but i havent heard how hard the b18c2's or b16a's are. Plus I just bought a spare D16Y4 engine and gearbox (i justed needed the gearbox but it was going cheap) and if I end up having good money to my civic- I will rebuild that spare engine (with froged pistons/ conrods, better camshaft, maybe boore the piston chambers, etc..) and turbo the engine and when its finish, i take my old original d16y4 engine and use that as spare and then i have a d series turbo ek civic haha. But only if it does go ahead, right now i need to pick it up from this guy (just bought it few hours ago) and save my money up/ sell my other car

yeah true, thats basically is what i want. But firstly... Suspenison, Brakes, POWER!! Body, then interior.... i am hoping i can get past power at least haha.
I want to pass one of my life goals since I was little- to have my car on front or in a car magazine haha

I still think instead of chasing killerwasps your best bang for bucks mod will be changing the gearing in your gearbox and fitting an lsd, especially if you have a second gearbox laying around as this will work so much better on hillclimbs and autocross

This. Shorter final drive and an LSD = laughing. Same feel as thousands spent on power mods with so much more usable power.

true but it depends what hes looking to do with the car other then the occasional track/hill climb. but yea gearing is the trick if your looking at that sort of build but if its also your daily then you cant go crazy...

Lol. Country road = use 5th. So use stock 5th gear. Stock 1st. Short 2 3 4. Stock 5th

Inb4 4th gear when completing right turn at big intersection.
