View Full Version : Start flushing my transmission?

My 2010 Civic FD has 24,000KMs or so as of today... my mechanic advised that we should get the automatic transmission flushed as it's been 3 years. Since he is a good friend of mine as well, he said the labour is free, I just have to get the fluids from Honda.

Now my question is this... do I really need to get it flushed at 24K KMs? Last time I drove my '03 Corolla, I didn't flush it until 50K or so... 8 years down the line as well...

He said all Honda automatics are terrible and prone to breaking so it's best to keep flushing it earlier on because it makes it last just that bit longer so I can at least make it to the 100K KM mark... in 10 years time. (you can tell I don't drive much).

It's the first time I've driven a Honda so I have no say in how reliable the auto box is, but I do recall Civic EK's and early CR-V's busting their gearboxes (some bearing thing), which cost $4000 to fix.

Any input would be great!

Thanks.

I don't know - you do the math - free labour now or avoid it and possibly pay $4000 when it breaks ?! Lol.

IMO the fluid isn't too much , I'd do it.

I just thought 24K KMs was too overkill for a flush already. Usually I was thinking around the 35-40K mark before a transmission service. Apparently I need a gasket too, not only Honda fluid.

still cheaper than rebuilding your gearbox. whilst you are at it, put an inline filter for the ATF and you should be golden for another 3 years without any issues.

I did mine at the 20,000km service ... its not for a while down the track to be honest, but it can't hurt to do it more often.

Drain and refill will be more than enough. Look into Penrite multi-vehicle semi-synthetic ATF as an aftermarket option. I have used it in many customers cars and is a great alternative to the OEM fluid. You can purchase from Repco for approx $40 for 4L

if you dont flush, dont you leave the crap inside the trans sump?

When you're draining you are draining from the sump to begain with.

Having fresh fluid in there is more important that "flushing the crap out".

Fresh fluid would prevent crap from appearing in the first place

By flushing
You're moving all that gunk that's holding your transmission together out and bad bad things WILL happen

The car only has 24,000km so i dont think sludge etc would have started to build just yet. Maybe if it had 74,000km

that dailytv said not to flush with aftermaket flushing liquid which contains solvent.
some might think to flush using new trans fluid instead of solvent, as in to flush out all old oil in torque converter and cooler.

might be a different concept of flush (old oil vs sludge)

Btw folks,

Honda's method of 3x3 "flush" is not flushing btw.

It's just repeated drain and fill an that's the manufacturer recommended method.

A real "flush" normally involves either a machine (to suck and blow the fluids) or chemical solvent, neither is recommended by Honda.

At 27k km a simple drain an refill would be more than suffice, and repeat every 20k km.

just follow the log book.

24k is is overkill, anyway, what is the gasket for? just drain and fill. there is no drop pan like other car. Is he really mechanic?
