central locking and alarm system

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting an alarm system for my Civic EG and have heard that after it is installed, the car can have keyless entry as long as it originally had central locking. However, my central locking is kinda busted, it will unlock all doors, but won't lock all doors. If I was to get an alarm system would keyless entry work for unlocking and locking all doors?

I heard that getting your locks replaced is expensive around $700 bucks and its more worthwhile getting an alarm system because thats only $400 to $500 for a decent one. What you all think?

I don't think it'll work..
As the alarm uses the existing central locking system..
Looks like u'll need to replace your central locking solenoids etc..
don't think it'll cost u $700..

How much would replacing central locking solenoids cost? Where can you get this done? and what do you mean by etc?

I think the $700 I was talking about involved replacing the existing locks with a brand new set of locks.

I don't think u need to go that far..
Just take your car to a place that installs alarms.. and tell them your problem..
shouldn't be too hard to fix..
like ebay sells central locking kits for like 20 bucks.. so i think 700 is outta the question :P

First thing i would do is find out what is causing the stock central locking not to lock all doors. It could be something simple like the lock tab is jammed when going down. Which doors arent locking properly?

If you don't/can't fix the stock central locking you can still have remote central locking with the alarm. But you have to install central locking actuators into each door and may need a relay depending on alarm.

Ok, I don't know what model the civic is, but I'll have a go at this :)

MOST Honda's need a solenoid in the drivers door when connecting central locking to an alarm, there are a few models out there that don't need a solenoid in the drivers door.

3 things to look at if you know where to look...

1: Your problem might be that the aftermarket solenoid has become mis-aligned and not doing what it's suppose to be doing anymore.

OR

2: as the other guys have said, but I don't think it could be the solenoids as you say you can unlock but not lock.
That leads me to believe that the relay system (found somewhere in the car) for the central locking is having a bad day and needs some attention.

OR

3: your lazy mans key is on the blink.

This is not something you could do in your back yard if you don't know what your doing.

Best get a SECURITY LICENCED person to have a look at your security issues. That way the insurance company won't look at you funny if something happens to your car.

Take my advice anyway you like, it's just that advise!

sounds like u need to get a new central locking kit(could even just be the motor on the drivers side door)... shouldnt cost much for a 2dr.. then once thats sorted... look for a descent alarm :)

i had a eg hatch previously and all i did was get a door motor thingy (cost about $100) installed whilst getting my alarm put in and that solved the problem.

Okay right now i'm talking about the standard honda central locking system. I think its a common fault with the Civics because I've seen a few eg's and ek's with this problem (lock not going down/up etc). I think the problem lies in the central locking module (greenbox). It gets 'lazy' over time and relays' had its time. It could be something else like the passenger c/l motor is seized. Give it a wack see if it starts working again.

The central locking ACTUATOR is the 'motor' from the c/l kit.
So it's just another name for the actual part.
Basically all central locking actuators are the same. You only need one slave actuator if your car has standard central locking.

Just pick an alarm that suits your requirements. I have a cheap as chips alarm in my vti eg but it does the job for me. I just really wanted the remote keyless entry feature.

I don't think Repco install alarms? I know they sell the central locking kits but not sure about alarms.
You should first probably try fix the standard c/l.
If you can't you will probably have to get the aftermarket c/l motors for each door and a relay to control them, then the alarm.
Talk to a good Auto Electrician, they should be able to diagnose the problem for you pretty quick.

Supercheap have the whole kit for $30 on sale. Bargain! The sale ends tomorrow though.
But you probably won't need the whole kit (made for 4 door cars without any standard central locking).
You will also need something to trigger the actuators if you want remote keyless entry.

an alarm is an alarm, if they want your car it disappears. so get something, just dont worry too much unless you dont have insurance.
