Hi Guys,

Sorry for the double post.

I just bought a car 2 days ago.

The guy said he serviced lol (what a load of shit)

I checked the oil yesterday and it barely had any. So ill be carrying out a service of things i can do at home.

I went to autobarn to get the fluids and fliters and what not, my personal choice if penrite for b series. Anyways long story short. Just as the heading says

Can i use Penrite PRO Gear Full Syn 75w-90

According to my service booklet that just i read it says mt94 or something.
Them letters aren't mentioned on this bottle.

Penrite website reccomends the TransOil version of this oil.
Which is Semi Syn.

Is it safe for me to use this on my em1?

Regards,
Amant

Use a gl4 liquid. Gl5 liquids contains sulphur that eat yellow metals e.g synchros and are only suited if indicated in the manual. Im using Castrol syntrans or syntrax i forgot but it is Gl4 class and fully synthetic. Fully syn is better than semi syn

....genuine fluid.... i know its been said a million times but it is the best value for money fluid.. it costs like 30 dollers. the only time i would second think that is if you where using an aftermarket LSD even then id prolly go genuine and add friction mods

see a lot of honda tech threads saying to just use engine oil.

whats up with that, i tried it out just recently 5w30, so i did engine and tranny. runs fine...
think honda gearbox's use thinner fluid than most other manufacturer gearbox's

the honda mtf is 75-80 or something like that.

hasnt the Honda MTF fluid changed over the years?

even if it hasnt

API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example, many modern gearboxes use a 75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil. - according to wiki

according to wiki....
the fact of the matter is that gear oil additives are diffrent to engine oil aditives. i personaly wouldnt risk my gearbox to save 30 dollers

I run both the Trans Gear 75W80 & Pro Gear 75W85 in my own cars and customers cars. I cannot fault either of them at all.

The only benefit of going to the 75W85 is that as you drive harder, with it being slightly thicker, the old b series boxes dont crunch at higher rpm in 2nd, 3rd & 4th.

Dont run the 75W90 as it is a touch on the thick side

honda fluid buck for buck is great. apparantly you can add some of that syncromesh oil too, if u can find it.
to cut out some of the grinds, a temporary bandaid.

NO use genuine honda fluid

What are your reasons for this? I have only used OEM fluid once and after making the switch to Penrite, I have never had issues

FAP FAP.

Using honda MTF is easier than asking questions.
and finding something cheaper thats just as good (maybe).

I know it works because he said so, so why should i test it myself.

god made the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th. true story.

It looks like custard when it's fresh out of the bottle, haha.

I can certainly back this though, after driving the same gearbox with redline and Honda MTF, it is certainly better with the MTF.

Personally used redline to test it out, and recently went back to oem honda. Have to say I felt the redline fluid was better than the oem honda, also heard that redline and penrite are pretty darn similar. Might be giving them a go next. Though dont get me wrong, OEM honda is great and bang for buck still!!

This is what i was thinking, my box felt great with redline fluid, would literally never grind unless I was a potato with the left foot.

I switched to Honda to feel the difference. 5000k in and I feel as if it grinds a bit more :S.

Keen to give the other ones a try though.

K i went back to auto barn and got the Trans Oil as reccomended by penrite.

And OMG! It makes the world of a differance. The gears straight now lol. No Joke before i had to put the shifter in werid angles to get into gear. And it slides rite in without any effort, can change gears wit my finger tips lol.

And damn i used 75-90 i think.... ill comfirm when i get home. I was planning a flush in the next 5000km service.

Why are u guys aruging about the price... honda mtf sells for approx 40 bucks for 2.5 L

Penrite cost me 45 bucks. Im not saving any money....

Also i never had any griding problems, unless to lazy to clutch in all the way lol.

^ Where I'll be gettinng my next test fluids from. Hope it does well as the redline did, was silky smooth the redline compared to oem honda. And wdf? $45 for oem honda i paid $20 bucks for 2L haha.

And what ever was in your car already must have been bloody terrible for you to have to angle your shifter weirdly to select a gear haha.

use honda's manual transmission fluid (MTF)

it's designed for it as well and being value for money

you can't go wrong with OEM fluids

OEM is best

in my years of working with after market fluids i have noticed one thing bout penrite and that its expensive for what it is (for crankcase oil anyway) and that bogans love it cause it says australia on the bottle. i didnt have the pleasure in dealing with there gear oils or additives...i just assume they follow suit.
i donno if they have changed in the last year since i started in the dealership....
