I'm the proud new owner of both an EG VTi and now an iPod too. I want to put the two together.

Anyone here using (or have used) iPods in their car? How did you set it up? If there were proper cup holders I'd get the suction cup accessory. I have to find a good way to mount it. Then find the best way to hook it up to the stereo. I'm not sure my old Pioneer headunit will be compatable.

Okay, now I think I know how I'm going to mount it.

But I've struck another problem. The guys at JB say you can't get an adapter to plug into the back of a Pioneer head unit unless it has AUX input. I was under the impression it plugged into the plug for the CD stacker. Am I wrong? If this is possible, know where I can get the adapter?

Thanks. Can you tell me a bit about the Alpine adapter or post a link?
The idea is to not buy a new headunit, otherwise I'd upgrade to a new Pioneer unit.

I've just found this... check it out.

Sounds much like the Alpine one you speak of, but backwards compatable, hoorah! Still, probably $200.

why dont you use an FM modulator?
cheaper and will be compatible with any head unit with an aerial input....

u can get the FM modulator thing from apple stores.. they sell em .. but if u want quality sound then get the headunit.

Yeah, having the files compressed is already a compromise. I like my sound quality... you can really hear the difference with a good sound system.

The FM transmitter loses out on a few fronts...
1. Loss of sound quality
2. Have to keep changing the frequency on long trips
3. Drains the battery faster, if you dont have the in-car charger.

But this new adapter sounds sweet. Even the old one would probably do me fine. If anyone has one of the older ones and wants to upgrade to the new Pioneer one, I'll buy your existing adapter.

decent hard-wired fm modulators are a lot better than people give them credit for. While far from perfect, they're also far from crap.

Any AiNet based Alpine H/U will control the Ipod, it actually charges the Ipod via that lead...

Only the 04/05 range will do all the functions tho..

Does it work with a ipod mini? Is the quality bad cos of the mp3? I usually cant tell much diff between full quality wave and 196kb/s mp3, but it would probly be evident on a high quality car sound system.

I'm going on what I've heard...
I've been told mp3 on their own (320kbps) are okay, FM modulation is okay, but combine the two and it's noticable on a good sound system.

Of course, it depends how picky you are and what kind of music you listen to.

EDIT: Also, thanks for the link.

Yeah exacally... i find rap music doesnt need the quality of rock, cos rock tends to distort, and blur all the channels when low bit rate.

which pioneer HU do u have?... as long as it has a CD Stacker input then they can order in a Adapter from pioneer.. u can get the adapter from any JB but depending on stock availabilty, they might have to order one in for u... if u from SE Suburbs, pop into JB Chadstone, i work in Car Sound and i'll be able to hook u up if u want.... ;)

It's the DEH-P3150. It has a stacker input according to the installation guide.
I live in Fairfield, so Chadstone is a bit of a hike, thanks for the offer though.

Also, what's the best way to get in behind the headunit? Take out the glovebox?
Cheers,

hmmm, i set mine up a little while ago,
Dont even bother with it now.

It sucks, as sometimes/most of the time, i like my music loud, and really loud.
With the ipod into AUX , it only allows it to be as loud as the ipod can putout... which is enough power to power headphones... get my drift?
Its listenable. but i found it to be shit, and just stuck with my mp3 cds for the moment

So you can't amplify it with the head unit's volume control? I assumed you'd be able to turn the volume on the iPod right down and then crank it on the head unit. Thus saving iPod battery too.

And judging by your username, you have very good taste in music.

:)

Well from memory, on my hu. kenwood MP4023 i wasnt able to do that. It got interference from whatever it was on. As there is no designated AUX channel on my hu, i had to run in off the radio channel. So the radio was down real low like 1 and ATT was hit. this gave no interference and then the ipod was cranked all the way up..
Id say it would be around a level 8 volume on a normal hu setup.

Im not sure about amping it. possibly you could run it through an amp? but also as said it wasnt able to be controlled from the hu, all trackskipping etc etc was done on the ipod directly.

Id say youd be better off giving on of those convertors a try if your dead set on getting this up and going :)
Maybe test it out also before you do buy..

Isnt that the whole point of the amplifier alpine included...

To amplify the ipods sound u need a dock connector.

Hmmm, so what happens when you have a CD stacker? Do you have to control the volume on the stacker, not the headunit?

91'lude

CD Stackers always output at maximum volume to run through the headunit... the ipod's have 2 output controls to run through, but if u get the alpine plug in id say it would disable the ipod one.
