Team BYP Racing battled a broken gearbox and disqualification from VIC Time Attack at Winton Raceway to finish first outright. More than 3 seconds quicker than the nearest competitor.

Easter Saturday Time Attack 2013

Arriving at the track early gave the team a chance to do the final checks and prepare the Honda Integra Type R. Next we did a track walk around Winton Motor Raceway which was a great way to familiarise ourselves with the track, the bumps and the racing lines.

Preparing the Honda Integra DC2R for the first time attack session.

The Honda was filled with a fresh 12 litres of Martini Racing Fuel RE116/E85. Benny took the Integra out for the first session for 2 runs. The Type R seemed fine and the track conditions were good.

Back in the pits the Honda was filled up with more Martini Race Fuel and the tyre pressures on the Yokohama ADVAN A050s were set.

On the second run and Benny Tran managed to put in a 1:29.6 lap time around the Winton circuit. This put Benny at the top of the time sheet and the car still had a lot more performance in reserve.

Benny headed out in the following session. Then during his time attack lap a problem surfaced at turn 10. A bad noise started coming from the gearbox and the car was forced to stop on the back straight.

After being towed back into the pits team BYP Racing inspected the car and found a damaged gearbox. Good results come from good preparation and BYP Racing had a spare gearbox. The team replaced the gearbox in less than two hours. The Honda Integra DC2 was ready to compete in the next Vic Time Attack Saturday session.

Bonnet up. Now 2 hours to swap the gearbox before the next session.

The BYP racing mechanics decided to detune the Integra’s supercharged engine in order to go easy on the spare box and “run it in”. Despite the detune the team still wanted to improve the lap time as they were now sitting second to a wild V8 powered all-wheel-drive Datsun 260Z sports sedan.

As hoped the BYP Racing ADVAN Honda Integra Type R achieved the fastest lap time of 1:27.9. This was still done on an old set of Yokohama ADVAN A050 tyres. One of the great things about the ADVANs is that they heat cycle well, unlike other tyres, there is very little performance drop off session after session and track day after track day.

Our fast time must’ve ruffled a few feathers. Despite being in the middle of country Victoria the clerk of course decided to have a chat with us about the car’s noise levels.

There was confusion with the rules and regulation for this event. Two weeks out from the event the organiser said they will be adopting the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge 2013 rules. Keeping within the WTAC rules the BYP Racing team decided to change the exhaust to a 3 inch custom titanium exhaust a week prior to the event.

However, the VIC Time Attack Winton Supplementary regulations implied the use of an effective muffler. The Honda DC2R Time Attack car was deemed to not meet regulation and disqualified from the event until an effective muffler has been installed.

The team tried to reason with the clerk of course and event organiser, but they stood by their decision. The team was frustrated and disappointed with the outcome. At 4pm on Easter Saturday the team’s chances of finding an exhaust shop to help solve the problem would be nearly impossible.

Heading to a local workshop late on Easter Saturday to get a new exhaust fabricated.

After making a few phone calls a local workshop in Benalla, VIC had enough parts lying around to make a new mid pipe exhaust system.

Easter Sunday Vic Time Attack 2013

The Honda returned from the local workshop with the new mid exhaust fitted. The BYP Racing Team prepared the car for the morning session. With the Speedweek television crew covering the day, cameras were fitted to the car. Shoots and interviews were also conducted. The camera crew asked Benny to go out and set a killer lap time, which is what time attack racing is all about.

Benny Tran took the BYP Racing Honda Integra out on the Winton circuit for a warm up lap and then launched in to his time attack lap. Straight up he banked an incredibly quick lap time of 1:26.8.

This was 3 seconds quicker than the nearest competitor.

It was now Brandon Lockwood’s turn to take the reins of his car for session 2 and 3. Brandon who had never driven around Winton took it relatively easy on his first session.

With his confidence building he set down an impressive second run and was able to get his time down to the 1:31's.

The top ten shootout was a unique feature we don’t often see at Time Attack events. Both drivers qualified for the top ten shootout.

It was time to fit the brand new set of Yokohama ADVAN 050's tyres. Amazingly BYP Racing have modified the Honda to fit the widest tyres possible; 265/35R18 on the front and 235/45R17 on the rear. An unusual fitment indeed.

It was Brandon's first time on brand new tyres, so he took it easy at first. Then on the second half of his lap he put his foot down to achieve a new personal best of 1:31.2.

Benny was the last car to run in the top ten time attack shootout. All eyes were on the BYP Racing Honda DC2R. Benny rose to the challenge and with the car lifting its inside rear wheel around corners Benny delivered with a blistering time of 1:26.5!!

It was official. Benny Tran, BYP Racing and Yokohama ADVAN were crowned the VIC Time Attack Champions for 2013!

Benny Tran heads up to the podium to collect the winner's trophy with minimum fanfare.

As a team we are extremely happy with the outcome and the car’s performance. We are looking forward to the rest of the Time Attack season and the lead up to the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge in October.

We’d like to give a big thanks to our sponsors and their ongoing support: Yokohama ADVAN, Martini Racing Fuel RE85, Circuit Club Track Days and Works Engineering. Our next stop will be NSW Time Attack at Wakefield Park on Jun 22-23rd 2013.
