Hi everyone,
Im new to this forum.
My EP3 makes this whining noise when accelerating, very obvious from 2k rpm up til VTEC noise takes over.
it is very annoying when cruising on highway.

The drive belt seems old but spray belt dressing does not make ANY difference to the noise. The tranny fluid has also just been changed with honda MTF06, which made no difference either.

what could be the cause?

Heres youtube video.

Thanks a lot!

I think your car has this very uncommon problem that occurs in almost all cars, you know the previous owner must have installed a super charger. Not many people are that unlucky to get a supercharged ep3 :P

When idling. Clutch in. Is it quiet? And how about clutch out

MIGHT. Be the imput shaft bearing

Not sure

could be a/c compressor clutch, honestly there are several possibilities I would recommend seeing if you can identify the source of the noise and go from there.

jsut started happening?
try it on neutral while coasting

It happens on all gears and neutral.

Clutch does not change it either.... :(

it is pretty quiet while idling.. the noise only gets obvious from 2k RPM

The A\C works fine too

Could be an electrical fault too

well if is not effected buy th3 clutch then that rules out gear box follow the noise and find out where is coming from... it could be any number of things and just random guesses on the internet aint the best way to go...

the reason i posted this is that i could not find where the noise is from and would like some guesses from other car owners or if someone whos had the same problem before could help me out. ive been to a couple of mechanics and they didnt find where the noise ifs coming from and thought it sounds NORMAL.. it is not obvious if you rev and listen near the engine bay, but when your sitting in the car with windows shut you can hear it like whats in my video. The car has an aftermarket exhaust which i do not know what brand it is, could it be the exhaust? i doubt it though.

Well we are gonna have a hard time guessing. But if it follows engine rpm and isnt gearbox related then look at pullys and tensioners..if thats not it then look elcewhere

OK thanks, ur answer is what i am after :) i know its rpm related but not sure what things to look at.

sounds like some sort of bad bearing.

Start checking all of the bearings, like water pump, atlernator, A/C, P/S, tensioner....

^^^ exactly. Id just remove one belt at a time till the noise i gone and go from there

I just thought of something...

Happened in my first EG... Do you have an aftermarket sound system?

Cause I remember the previous owner of my EG did a dodgy with the sound setup and the wires weren't earthed properly etc. It would whine in tune with my revs iirc.

sound system seems stock... but i wil have a look, if i turn it off, the whine should stop if its coming from the speakers?

Daveho1

Sorry but why cant you open the bonnet and see if its even coming from the engine

That's correct...

If stock sound system then its unlike the problem I had however.

Is the whining sound electronical or mechanical ie like ball bearings scraping against each other or dried/worn belt on pulley?

any mods?

the noise sounds like an electric motor, i reckon its more likely to be a bearing problem than a belt.... the belt is old, i went to a mechanic and he sprayed some belt dressing on the belt and had no effect on the noise.

everything is stock except the exhaust.

sounds like its a idler/thrust bearing imo

i did already, as i said, ive taken it to a mechanic and he said it sounds normal. thats why ive posted this threads here.

im goin to another mechanic to get belt/pulleys checked out.

no i mean when you drive at 80kph on freeway, then you shift to neutral
the noise still there? or did you try revving engine while stationary?

It's the power steering... Have you used Honda power steering fluid? Mine does it because the fukcers who did my timing belt used generic fluid rather then Honda fluid regardless of my request, so my power steering pump is fukt too. I'd suggest getting a power steering fluid flush with genuine Honda fluid...

just went for a little drive, the noise goes with RPM.... doesnt matter which gear im on including neutral.

i might try to get my drive belt replaced next week, which mechanic would have parts for this car? can anyone recommend :D

Quick update: went to a mechanic today, seems like the water pump needs replacement. ordering the part tomorrow.

noise is gone when drive belt is removed

surprising I would have guessed buy that sound a/c clutch or alt bearing.. water pump would have been the last one id check.
glad you found a mechanic who isn't a complete idiot
