So I have a 1996 Honda civic with a d16y8 engine and I need to change my timing belt and I looked at getting one and it turns out there is two with a different amount of teeth on them so does anyone know anything about the reason for 2 different ones and if there's a more common one ? If you need any more info just ask? :) I don't wanna have my car off the road waiting for the belt to come in if I don't have to ? The reason I won't have the car back on the road untill I get it is because I need a new rocket cover gasket anyway and I can't take it off to see what belt I need then leave the old gasket on there untill I get it and I don't want to put the new gasket on and then eventually take it off again for the belt plz help :)

So it's either a 107 teeth or 104 belt ?

No idea how many teeth but you generally do your water pump while you're at it as it's more accessible during the belt change, and the pump and belt have approximately the same life-span (100,000KMs or 5 years, whichever comes first preferably).

You may also want to consider your others belts, such as A/C belt, P/S belt and alternator belt. You can buy all the belts in a single full belt-kit and have them done together. I paid about $700 for belts + labor last time (6 months ago +/-).

As Dougie said (Hi Doug), water pump is a must at those k's to make sure, also new tensioner pulley 'cause the bearing in it is lubricated/sealed for the life of the bearing (or in reality the life of the lubricant) and maybe the front crankshaft oil seal (it's pressed into the front of the oil pump housing directly behind the lower belt pulley. And as you'll be doing the water pump, don't forget new long life, anti corrosion coolant.

It's very annoying to do one of these things by itself and then have to do another (or more) a short time later.
