View Full Version : How many humans here take out their spare tyre to reduce weight?

I was just reading the "new to modding cars" thread in this section (bored at work) and I'm up to weight reduction, power to weight ratio.

How many humans here actually take out their spare tyre to reduce weight? I've always thought about doing it...

It doesn't matter what the rest of us do, you need to ask yourself: is it worth it waiting for a tow truck/friend aid because you don't have a spare?

You have an interior... Get with the program...

DreadAngel
23-07-2013, 01:45 PM
Serious though...

Leave the spare inside the car on daily, definitely leave it for the spirited runs, that's where you usually get punctures and you will have issues getting help up in the mountains...

When tracking then obviously take the spare out when you arrive ;)

Drifter995

I took my spare out, mainly so I could fit things in the spare wheel hole. Will get a space saver wheel, get a bag for it and put it behind the passenger side seat though.
I've buggered a tyre running on it flat cause of that sole reason (Well, I also completely forgot it was flat and drove on it >.>)

bennjamin
23-07-2013, 02:03 PM
either go all out (like race car) or dont bother at all. IT wont make a difference to performance and is needed for those rare occasions of a flat tyre.

i would leave it.

when i first got my civic eg 5 years ago, i did that, and i accidently hit the kerb and blow the tyres and i didnt have spare wheels and had to wait for tow truck and $250 later. i put the spare wheel back in

for road car, not much point in reducing weight. anticipate for the worst and prepare your car to be comfortable, not light and skimp on the essentials.

try back seats (they are uselesss anyway) + tyre + jack tools + light wheels + remove all doors and replace with vinyl and weld some bars accross there and put monkey net.

you will notice the difference a lot more air in your face

I was comparing weights from spare to stock to my SSRs.
spare 10.9 - stock 17kg - SSR 13.8 These weights all include tires

the same tire?

no, obviously not the same tire. The spare tires the stock one. the oem had 205 50 15 on them. the SSR had 225/45/15.
Remember the space saver runs alot higher PSI. which in run also makes it heavier.

Daveho1
26-07-2013, 06:12 AM
so then whats the point of mentioning rims when they tire is the majority of the weight.

well thats the case with my rpf1 anyway.

an interesting thread would be the weights of high performance tires as the difference in rotational mass may actually make a difference
