i am doing mine as we speak... i have already cut the holes.... its not that hard... just have to have a steady hand. If your in melb im happy to catch up n show you mine.

making my own custom grills also. im in preston.
pm me if interested and i can show you how it was done.

i also reccomend repainting the bonnet to get the best finish.... i had a few stone chips anyway so i sanded mine back after i cut it.

this was after it was cut and just before i sanded the edges... always sand the edges by hand... came up good... but this is the only photo i could find.

making the prototype vents this week... and once im happy ill make the real ones.

also thinking of having honda in one of the vents. lol possibilities are endless with new machines. lol

Lol prob can do an eg. But to do a perfect job... Its prob not worth the money on your behalf. All comes down to how long it takes... What would u pay to vent a bonnet including custom vents?? Lol

Starting from the beginning, you need to remove the bonnet off the car. Once this is done, place it up side down on some cardboard or anything that wont scratch your bonnet.

Begin removing the big circular clips that hold the heat liner in. be sure to disconnect the windscreen washers also.

Once the heat liner is removed you end up with the raw bonnet. On the left and right hand side there are the shapes you want to cut out already. THESE ARE YOUR TEMPLATES!
The shape is done for you.
No you cannot just attack it with a hacksaw or anything like that and you cannot cut right on the endge of the inner liner also…

This is what I did.
First you need to get your hands on a Dremel. I had a cutting disc on the dremel and it worked a treat.
Looks like:
http://s6.postimg.org/an6jrnda9/20130915_111517.jpg

the inner liner with the shape you want is used as a reference point. you want to mark a line all the way around the hole about 10mm in from the edge of the liner.
to do this you have to make this really complex tool that i used to scribe a perfect line on the inside of the bonnet.

you get some scrap .7 thick zincanneal (mild steel) and some tin snips.

the scrap piece can be 50mm long and 20mm wide if you like. Scribe a line 10mm in and cut this shape. you can clearly see the scrive line. (this will give you an exact 10mm space from the inner liner). look closely how this is shaped...

http://s6.postimg.org/u12sdlfcx/20130915_111126.jpg

the point of the metal is about 1mm lower than the rest. you can see why in next pic.

you can then go to your bonnet and mark the line like so.
http://s6.postimg.org/6bdcowgzl/20130915_111310.jpg

yes it does go around corners!!!

http://s6.postimg.org/a90meb3sx/20130915_111355.jpg

this will give you a dead perfect scribe line 10mm in from the inner liner and cannot make a mistake is the inner liner is your ruler i guess.

Then its time to grow a massive pair of B***s as your just about to cut holes in your perfectly fine bonnet.
Get the dremel and you can begin following the line. STAY 1-2 MM IN FROM THE LINE.... DO NOT CUT ON THE LINE AS YOU LEAVE YOURSELF NO ROOM FOR ERROR IF YOU ARE NOT CONFIDENT.
i stayed about 1mm as i CBF sanding too much. lol

like so
http://s6.postimg.org/fn3zzliwx/20130915_111842.jpg

for the radius corners i recommend staying away from the radius with the dremel and just cussing across in a straight line.... you can use the next tool to create the radius.

this photo is just to show how awkward it can be to cut the radius. you can clearly see that the disc will not turn a corner that sharp.

http://s6.postimg.org/chje9e0ap/20130915_111852.jpg

do this!
http://s6.postimg.org/auys1wdmp/bonnet_cut.jpg

once you have cut the entire circle out you can then your Die Grinder out and go to work like so.
this puppy spins like a honda F1 car... 18,000 rpm and with a new blade, it chews the aluminium. so you can make your radius.

http://s6.postimg.org/ua4yh9hj5/20130915_111952.jpg

if you struggled with the disc you can now clean up any bumps in the cuts like so

http://s6.postimg.org/za2ep7n5t/20130915_112021.jpg

you can then grab a hand file and clean up the rest of the cut. IT TAKES TIME TO GET IT PERFECT!!!!!! you can file to your scribe line.

you can also put a sanding disc on the dremel and do the bulk of it with that.

REPEAT FOR ALL 3 vents.

the actual vents im still making...

but for this you now have a 10mm lip to run a bead of urethane around and glue your mesh grill too.
The urethane will stand heat and be fine. this will allow the grill to sit up right against the aluminium and when you flip the bonnet over it will look almost like a bought 1. lol

i will update when my grill is done.

photo of the hood. (bonnet is sanded)

http://s6.postimg.org/w5wc65vr5/20130826_171850.jpg

yes bonnet will have to be resprayed to get PERFECT RESULTS.

but spray bonnet once grills are in.

hope this helps guys....

would consider doing other peoples bonnets as mine came out pretty mint. just dont know how to price it yet. if there is interest let me know.

but easy enough to do yourself.

just dont slip with any of the tools as you will then need a new bonnet. lol

peace

Great write up, what vent mesh are you going to use and how you going to support it in place?

philipminge

i am making the vent myself. so can be out of maybe 1mm aluminium and they are glued in place. they Urethane used is MORE than strong enough. once it sets you will have to wreck the vent to get it off.

there are a few different ways to do it though.

but glueing is the best way.
so you run a bead of urethane on the 10mm lip we left around the hole.... and the grill will fit in there spot on.

then you put it back on the car n drive away like a boss!
jk

ill try get a sample grill done today. and show everyone.

the grill can be holes, sqares, rectangles, writing... basically anything. all CNC done so you can put most things on the grill if you have all the time in the world.

lol

I tell the machine to punch all the 1mm holes first then punch the 4mm holes after.
Worked well.
But yeh plain is the go I reckon.

CNC turret punch.
Its a US machine we purchased new about 2 years ago. Its huge.
So all the parts made are all done on that. And folded on a press brake.
