Hi all,
Need some advice on locating this humming sound. The sound seems to come from the front left passenger area when I cruise at 40-50+km. To describe the sound, it sounds like a turbine but not quite a grinding sound. It just hums with a sonar like sound.
This sound came about after I changed to aftermarket coilovers. They have checked the coils are installed correctly, nothing wrong with the wheel bearing and the tyres are brand new. They are stumped to what it could be. They suggested it was the noise from the gearbox as Hondas have their gearbox near there.
Anyone know what it could be? I am considering taking it to another mechanic or even Honda to check it out.
Thanks

I'd be surprised if it was the gearbox considering the KMs ... But is it there when you're running at any particular RPM? ... could be the transmission mount might be a little worse for wear or intake pipe is loose? :-s

When I took it to Honda for service, I told them about this sound. They checked everything and said it was my tyres. Now I changed my tyres (not for this purpose but it was on its way out), the sound is still there but not as loud.
No particular RPM. Just when I cruise at 50kmh+, the sound kicks in. The faster I go, the louder it gets.
Does Honda check transmission mounts and intake pipes during a normal service?

Ummm not sure to be honest, if you check the receipt with your last service it will state everything they checked, whether they did or not is another thing

Thanks lolmclol.
I was looking to try first Hondaworld and DSCHonda to see if they can solve this problem. Anyone had experience with these people?

Did you get a wheel alignment after swapping the coils? You always need a wheel alignment after playing with suspension

check if your wheel nuts are tight/torqued evenly and adequately - happened to me once and took me wayy too long to figure out
edit: just saw the other posts about how the wheels have come on and off
Have you tried other rims?
Does this happen constantly or just under acceleration/braking or coasting only (etc.)

RenzokukenJ: Aligned and balanced after coils and also after installing new tyres - sound still there
Curtis265: I had 2 different people do the coilovers and tyres. Both had the noise. I haven't tried other rims as I have none to try other than my spare tyre. It happens when I accelerate and the sound kicks in around 50kmh. At coasting the sound is there (E.g. on the freeway)

could it be a wheel bearing?
the wheel bearings a generally good for life of the vehicle but when they go its almost always the front left one to go first since it sees the most drains/curbs/etc.
jack the car up and try pulling on the rim shake it left right up down. see if theres any wobbles.
if its the tyres then putting the front up on jack stands and accelerating with the wheels in the air should answer it, because the tyres wont make a noise in the air you can rule them out, if the noise continues then its something else ie wheel bearing

Ive booked it to a mech this week to have it checked out. Everything seems to be pointing at the wheel bearing even though Honda said they were ok.
I will update all after this week.
Thank you everyone for your help.

Wheel bearing issue - Problem solved.
Just checked the side where they fixed the bearing looked lowered compared to the other side by 0.5cm. The 1 finger test is a tighter fit. Will test on another flat surface. I hope I don't have another problem.

Will there be any issues if a rear corner is about 1-2mm out compared to the other rear side?
Or does it have to be exact? I am worried about my tyres wearing or it causing other damages.

im not sure i understand what you mean by out?
rear corner of what?

No problem with 1-2mm. Stock Honda height is about 10mm lower on the front driver's corner to compensate for the weight of the driver.

BabyFace - The left side compared to the right side is out by a couple of mm
Aarong- Thanks. I had the front readjusted and it is within 1mm. I was worried that it may cause uneven tyre wear or other damages due to unbalanced car.

how much do you weigh?
what spring rates do you have?
Shimian

Not sure what spring rate as I didn't install them. Im not knowledgeable when it comes to coils. I am running Neo Max R.
I weigh about 75kg.

yehp, driver side should be higher, grab about 3 25kg bags of rice, plot it on the driver seat and then re adjust the sussy
