ohallo
back in april i sold my EK1 to fund a DC2. Looked at a few that just werent up to scratch condition wise. Lots of them were beat up and not well taken care of.
Until this popped up on gumtree. Clean, stock, low(ish) kms and owned by someone who actually knew their shit about the car, and was previously owned by an old guy.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/521698_454865944596858_812917091_n.jpg
It had 2 weeks rego and no roadworthy but all it needed was 2 tyres and a seal.
Sorted myself some 195/55 RE002's all round;
https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/228563_467012273382225_1862677800_n.jpg
and got roady/rego.

picked up a few other bits like a DC2R lip and DC2R gear knob
https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/263288_469308873152565_1319215610_n.jpg
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/7943_484689041614548_2056750026_n.jpg

Then found a package on gumtree cheap.
Tein street flex DC2R coils, dc2r LCAs/endlinks, ASR 24mm sway bar, asr rear subframe brace.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/17613_497663193650466_2050210356_n.jpg

swiped them asap and got them on and this is how it sat for a while

Stripped the black from the ASR and added my own touch:

I was absolutely in love with the way it sat and handled. So much grip. The potenzas are really awesome tyres even in 195.

Picked up and installed a Mugen twinloop catback:

Sold my potenzas and DC blades with the intention of picking up buddyclub P1s with toyo proxes T1Rs but sale fell through.. so now im on ghetto spec wheels
Mugen MF10 reps up front, Jazz stockies up the back.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1400212_548880491862069_531394122_o.jpg
Kinda like the MF10s.

Recently, I picked up a B20B8 :D

Along with;
Moroso Sump, Edelbrock Adjustable Cam Gears, Type R Oil pump, new water pump, walbro fuel pump, gates racing timing belt, ARP main bolts and a baffle plate.
[Reserved for pics]

Started tearing down the motor

Heard all the stories about things people did to get the crank pulley off.. said lolk and rattled it off nws.

Pulled the head, pumps, old sump, thermostat etc and everything else off.

And thats as far as I've gotten with it. Gonna start cleaning the block up tonight.
Next week I'll order a bottom end gasket kit from JDM yard and a VTEC Conversion kit, and once the block is all sorted, I'll pull the head off of my B18 :D

I didn't even know what a camshaft was when I was on my L's

Can't wait to see how you build it.

Heheh. Neither can I :D currently pulling the head off of my b18 but im stuck trying to get past the engine mounts to get to the timing chain tensioner. Cant fit anything in there to get to the bolt

Try govfrom underneath.

Don't use multi-hex spanner/socket.

Use hex only. Tensioner bolt is shallow and easily rounded

The whole engine needs to come out anyway right?

I would strongly suggest removing the engine in one piece and deconstructing it on a stand (or even just on the floor), so much easier that way (especially on your back lol)

I'm also curious to hear what internals you want to run and if you plan to have any work done on the head?

Damn you beat me to it timbo lol, was gonna say, why not remove the entire motor first?

I need an engine crane to get the motor out, which I dont have. Planned on removing the head and putting it on the b20 and once the motor is built then id just drop the b18 block out the bottom.

I thought about doing internals but its way more money than I wanna spend on the motor itself. Itd be 400ish for pistons and rods then another 300 for the rings etc, that money could be better spent on a 4.7d fd & LSD.

I dropped my engine out through the bottom without a crane initially.

if you have a jack that can lift fairly high and a bunch of sleepers you'll be right :P

Oh ok fair enough. Any idea what compression ratio you end up with using the B20 stock internals and c2 head? the c2 head should help to increase the compression.

I have an SCA jack that doesnt even get under my car anymore :D need to get an arcan haha

Not sure of the exact ratio but you gain a tiny bit of compression

Looking good man, will you be going with the stock head gasket or a thinner one?

with stock head gasket your comp will be approx 10.2:1.

The conversion kit im buying has an oem headgasket in it but is there any advantages to running a thinner one?

Higher compression.

Super-DA9
26-11-2013, 07:14 AM
As stated above, a tad bit higher compression, but will throw the timing out a little bit. You have adjustable cam gears though so that shouldn't be a problem.

Something I would consider is replacing the crank and rod bearings with something like ACL race bearings that can handle higher RPM. I'm not sure if the B20 stock ones are made to take high RPM abuse?

They are only around $150 and will save you huge headaches later.

MassiEk4
26-11-2013, 07:19 AM
Like cbauto said your compression will get bumped up ever so slightly.
If you havn't bought one yet might wanna look into it, but since your kit comes with a oem one, I would say don't worry about it, from memory a two layer is a 0.09:1 compression bump.

Have a look at that site I posted, you can list you can list your motor specs with head gasket size and it gives a approxamite compression ratio.

Also are you gettin ARP head studs?

Ill probs just stick with the oem gasket and save the hassle. And although b20 is still a strong motor yeah bearings would be a good idra.

Replace the bearing with ACL, might as well do everything as the motor is apart. It might take you longer in the end to complete your car...but at the end of the day... you wont have to worry about it.

Would I have to touch the cylinders or could I just swap out rods/pistons?

You can change pistons without machining the block. Not advised though

First of all, if you're doing bearings the pistons and rods don't need to come out at all. Just the crank.

But if you want to replace the pistons and rods then you might get away with a light hone if the bores are in good nick and the machinist knows what he is doing, but it's generally safest to go a tad wider on the bore and pistons.

Ill be doing rings aswell regardless of whether I do pistons/rods so wont they have to come out anyway

Have a look a these videos, the guy basically tore his b18c, rehoned and turboed it (ignore the turbo part, just pay attention to how he honed it at home himself), the second link includes dyno footage. Both videos are of two different cars.

From memory there are 2 12mm bolts that hold the manifold the a steel bracket which bolts to the block, to get to the bolts to "free" the mani, so you can take it off in one piece with the head, you have to undo them from underneath the car with a long extension.

Check this out and go to step 16.
