View Full Version : 3rd gear hardest to engage.

The last issue I am concerned about after my purchase of a CU2 08 Manual Lux is with the manual trans. Often changing to third gear does not feel as smooth as the rest and feels like there is some resistance there, sometimes with a slight grinding noise.

No dramas with the other gears. It doesn't occur every time I change to third but more often than not.

Any ideas?

How many km's does the car have ? Has the gearbox oil been changed ?! If so most likely the 3rd gear synchros .

It is quite an often thing with the Honda gearboxes as I replace synchros very often regardless of chassis .

Where are you located ?

Just under 115 000.

Not sure when gearbox oil was last replaced. Car has full logbook service history.

Located Sunshine Coast QLD.

I don't know anyone up there to suggest to go and see the car .
Have you replaced your clutch ?! Has the previous owner replaced it ?! If so that is when your gearbox oil was also replaced .

Not sure if clutch has been replaced. I have only owned the car for a couple of weeks now.

I have raised the issue with the dealer.

never hurts to do it early, especially if it's box has been regularly smashed

Were there any recalls?

The other thing to take into consideration is the 3rd/4th gear slider

There hasn't but there's a thread on it by Freedrops that you should be changing the filter (yes gearbox oil filter) and oil every 50k or so..

I change transmission fluid every 2nd oil change

There is a gearbox oil filter in the AUTO transmission not in the manual .
I do not know anything of a recall but because we do a lot of gearbox rebuilts in store and we also suply Carbon Synchros (SynchroTech Authorised Dealer) and rebuilt kits , we sell quite a few and the majority of problems is the synchros in mainly 3rd , followed by 2nd or 4th .
