I've seen the previous surveys where the Accord took #1 and #4 the following year but I haven't seen the previous years one where it took out #9: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-reviews/64280/most-reliable-cars
Interestingly it also beat the C-class but lost to the 3 series in the "Best compact executive car" test: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/driver-power/63993/class-winners
I wouldn't call it a compact though...

The Accord Euro has ALWAYS done very well in the UK ratings, sometimes being first, and Honda has also always been one of the most reliable brands.

Hondas do well in UK reliability tests, but I'm always mystified by the uncool "grandpa" image that the Accord and the Honda brand in general has in England.
While it's true Honda's brand image is slipping in Australia after the loss of their sportier models (S2000, Integra, Prelude, NSX), and other than the Euro the rest of Honda's range is pretty dull... But the CL9/CU2 Accord doesn't deserve this reputation. Typical comments about the Accord say it's dull, boring to drive, and it is derided with comments us Aussies would fling at the 4cyl Camry crowd. With the sharp steering and flat handling, and decent power in 2.4L version, surely the Euro is one of the more engaging mid-size sedans to drive, and probably the best among front wheel drivers? It's still certainly one of the best looking, even the CL9 still looks great. Perhaps because the English only buy them in diesel, or possibly 2.0L versions?

I asked this on an English forum regarding another car and they replied with: "people put MPG over reliability, value for money and performance over here whereas in the US and probably Aus reliability and build quality is there priority and is always talked about in reviews and verdicts in the motoring press. "
It probably applies to the Accord too.

well thats totally true in Europe, where parts and repairs are reasonably cheap.
Fuel is expansive, AND CO2 tax which is kinda linked to MPG means a reliable/in fuel efficient car could cost a LOT in rego and tax every year that would pay for a LOT of repairs.
