Hey guys,

I was driving my ED6 then it just suddenly died on me, I got it running again after cranking it a couple of times after letting it sit for a bit then it died again 5minutes later.

All it would do is crank but not turn on so I replaced the ignition coil and recharged the battery but it still only cranks but wont turn on.

I hear the fuel pump priming and the car cranks but it doesnt want to start.

The engine is d16y1 and its still carby.

Any suggestions on what might be the problem? can the plugs and leads suddenly bum out as well?

to start with D16Y1 is not a carbie engine, ED6 had the D15B4 dual carb engine with mechanical fuel pump so you wont hear that either.

if you still have no spark you fault would be the igniter

has a mini me swap, with an electric pump

i replaced the ignition coil and still doesnt start, just cranks like before i swapped it

EDIT: still using the d15b4 dizzy

ah OK, I tend to forget people modify their cars.

test the ICM

Don't think it has a icm cause I'm using the original carby dizzy

carb dizzy still uses an ICM

I agree, sounds like when I fried my ICM accidentally.

I'm yet to check the icm, but wondering if the icm is bad, can I use one from a d16a8? So an obd0 icm in a carby dizzy.

EDIT: just pulled the dizzy off the car, where is the ICM located in the dizzy? does everything have to be pulled out?

It looks very different inside compared to a b series dizzy that i've pulled apart.

A diagram or picture would help heaps but I cant seem to find it on google.

I'm trying to replace my icm but can't seem to remove the piece in the way? Anyone know how to remove it? http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/09/e7emujam.jpg

you rotate it and theres an opening for a screw

There doesn't seem to be any screw holding it on the shaft

its a press fit, no screw

you need a press or puller to remove, do not damage the reluctor

Damn, so my easiest option would be to just swap over the whole part from the other dizzy?

Installed the dizzy back on the car and it still won't start, it was making a slightly different noise like something ticking in the dizzy and there was a bit of backfire from the carbs

are you getting spark ?

got the car running, so i guess the culprit was the icm.

what might of caused the icm to bum out while driving on the freeway? overheating?

im just worried this might happen again, was i suppose to put some sort of thermal paste on the underside of the icm and ignition coil?

also what ring do i replace to stop oil from going inside the dizzy again?

also i sprayed carb cleaner in the housing of the dizzy when i was rebuilding it because it was full of oil, what parts need to be re-lubed?

ICM's will fail over time, heat is a factor, but unfortunately they will simply fail.

Thermal paste does help with heat transfer however I don't think they put paste on them from the factory.

There will be a seal at the bottom just before the bearing. The bottom bearing is usually sealed and the top one can be lubed.
