View Full Version : S2000 strange noises?
hey guys,
anyone got strange noises that the car makes, which worries you? post up!
for me, when i turn corners in neutral or clutched in, the rear makes a knocking or banging noise, any idea what that could be? my diff mounts are broken btw, so i'll need to get that changed soon. not sure if that's the cause of the sound though.

The clunk in the rear could be because you may have a clutch type LSD fitted. These can tend to be noisier when turning, particularly at low speeds (i.e. parking etc.)

was in a friends s2k yesterday, and anytime he accelerated in any gear to 74km/hr the passenger side of the car seemed to rattle. didnt make any rattles before or after that speed, i checked the rev count and it was at 2500-3000rpm that seemed to exacerbate the noise. I told him to check the CVs but its the first time ive seen something like that happen.

my car squeaks from the front end when i shift hard from fist to second.
i cant find the issue and it shits me harrrrddddd
also get diff mounts fixed bloke. lol
read on some parts of s2ki that i may have a sticky lsd, which is causing the clunk when turning at low speeds out of gear.
i am also considering buying hasport 88A diff mounts

Does this only happen when you shift at high RPM (9K)?

Maybe there's too much power of legendary honda 2000 that your front end loses traction

Could be the clutch thrust bearing chirping at high speed. I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes more noticeable across the range.

A Mate had this issue and soon enough diff blew. As mentioned get the diff checked asap. Is It a clunking sound??
Yeah but it makes NO sound when going straight or shifting or turning in gear. Only turning with clutch in or neutral.

First fix your diff mounts if they are stuffed as this may be the cause.
It is possible you may have a busted pinion tooth or two (diff gear) though because when you are neutral/clutch engaged and rolling the pinion is being driven by the crown wheel, making the noise more obvious. Otherwise it's just the clutches in the LSD. I can't really explain why it only happens while turning though.
A cheap and easy check if you're worried will be to drain the diff oil and check for metal parts. If you keep driving it with a broken pinion the whole thing will explode soon and ruin your housing (bearing caps) and possibly the LSD. They are very prone to this problem - check out our blog about it here: http://neatgearboxes.wordpress.com
I understand what you're saying chez, but when my clutch is engaged and rolling straight, it makes no noise. I don't have a clutch type lsd either, I asked the previous 2 owners.

Mine makes a slight whine when i've got the clutch out in neutral. ISB?
One that i test drove a while ago made a very loud whirring in the transmission.. Needless to say i walked away

Yeah I'd still be a) changing diff mounts and if the noise is still present b) draining and checking diff oil for chunky bits.

Quite possibly a gearbox bearing, yes. Just as likely to be one of the countershaft bearings on an S2K.

my car now has no interior so the gearbox with the clutch out and in neutral is the loudest thing ever.
its got a whine or simply just gears turning noises. lol
both s2k's i had did it from day one.

Wat! If I had strange noises from my engine I'd have checked the oil a long time before posting on OzHonda.

I service it every 5000kms and ive only done 2000 .. surely it wouldnt have low already. By the way is there a way to test whether the tct is faulty or not

Have a read through this thread it might help you out for now. But really the noise is what will show whether it is the TCT or not.

I actually just re-read your post and realised you said the noise stops when the car is idling... if it is the TCT the noise will be audible when car is in idle.

Replaced the TCT and its gone now. Cheers
Hey peeps,
I changed my diff mounts today, got Hardrace.
I still get a clunk when turning in neutral or clutched in.
As I said, previous owners told me I dont have clutch type lsd, but I'm not so sure about that anymore.
Anymore ideas? Thanks!

Change the oil and inspect for chunks of pinion teeth or carrier bearing caps.
If the oil is clean, and it is not a clutch type LSD, the carrier bearing preload screws may be loose, allowing the carrier bearings to clunk from side to side (this is a diff-out problem).
I'm pretty sure I just have a sticky lsd, which is no problems. The diff/car doesn't make any other noises in any other situations.
I do have a slight diff whine though, which doesn't bother me atm.
Gonna do a rebuild with OS Giken 1.5way + 4.77FD in the future.
