it will overheat in no time, if there is no water or coolant.

Just took the cap off and I cant see anything in it. When i checked the plastic reservoir next to it there was a little bit in their, couldn't tell i it was water or coolant. Are you men't to see some coolant when you open the metal cap?

check the oil level also and make sure its to the upper line
you should be able to see coolant when you look in the radiator like below pic

take another car and buy some coolant for it,also it might be leaking so watch for leaks when refilling
also check the thermostat by removing it and putting in pot of hot water to see if it opens,if it does nothing its stuffed and get a new one

1st step would be check coolant as the others have been saying.
Also check the oil level and colour while you're at it

Also is it normal that only 1 radiator fan spins?

Umm
One rad fan is for the radiator - when the other is for the AC radiator. Correct me if wrong but that means one can spin at once or both depending on which system needs it

^ thats what I was thinking. I'll check again with the AC on to see if the other fan spins.
u mad?

Also is it true that the coolant that you buy say from Kmart for like $6 is pretty much the same as putting water in the radiator?
I also heard that coolant is normally for cold countries and isn't really needed for Australian cars, and water is fine
u mad?
20-05-2014, 12:45 PM
yh, coolant here in aus good for its rust inhibiting properties/ anti corrosion
Flyson
20-05-2014, 12:46 PM
Ok thanks. Should I buy there concentrated coolant or is the Kmart stuff fine

Checked the radiator fans with the air con turned on and still only 1 fan is moving. The air con works fine.

Ive always used a 50/50 mix of water and coolant
Flyson did you check your oil level just to be safe?
btw forgot to ask,who sold you a car with empty radiator and overheating?
Flyson

The oils fine, the car burns a bit of oil but.
When I bought the car about 3 weeks ago the car was fine, the overheating only just started happening in the past 3 days. Its fine now but since i put water in. I check the radiator every time I go for a drive to see if theres any loss of fluid and so far so good.
